*Fearful that her deceased ex-husband was haunting her, a woman went to see Fr. Vincent Lampert, the exorcist for the diocese of Indianapolis, Indiana. Ever since her ex-husband’s death, there were strange goings-on in his old favorite room. …

It’s not the first time Fr. Lampert had encountered such hauntings. “I have celebrated Masses in locations where these types of things happen and that usually takes care of it,” he said. “During the Mass, when we pray for the person and everything becomes quiet, then we know this is what was needed.”*

amen…yes, respect for those who have passed on…we pray only…

Wouldnt it likely be a demon giving the illusion of someone?
I believe so. “If” a deceased individual’s spirit was somehow present on earth, then it was neither in heaven nor in hell. That is not consistent with Christianity. Demons, however, to further their lies and deception, may impersonate others.

Well, we’re talking about souls here, which of course aren’t in a “location” as such, since they don’t take up space.

It is conceivable that a soul could be “in” Purgatory while affecting a particular place on earth, and that this might appear to a human as if there were an invisible presence there.

After all, demons or angels aren’t “in” rooms or churches or other places, so much as they are thinking about those places in a way that interacts with them.

The Catholic Church teaches that there is an intermediate state where souls are purified from their attachment to sin before entering heaven, which we have called purgatory. The Bible talks about Hades, the abode of the dead, and Jesus is said to have descended into “hell” (most likely Hades) to free the righteous and allow them to enter heaven. We have really no idea where these “places” (if we can use that term in the afterlife) are, and at one time it was believed by theologians that there was a “Limbo” where unbaptized babies went, although this was never official teaching. In any case, they are neither in heaven or hell, and may very well be attached to earth in some form until their worldly and sin attachment is purified. This seems to be consistent with what the priest is saying, and why prayer for them seems to help loose them from their attachment to earth.

In any case, it is neither Biblical nor is it in Church teaching that a soul always is either in heaven or hell after death–not until after the Final Judgment has occurred. They may be being purified or have been in some other state of being, as in the OT.

When I first looked at this article my eyes skipped a line and I thought it said “Two ghosts weigh in on exorcists”. Lol.

This is a true story. When my father-in-law was living my SIL gave birth to a baby girl, 15 years after the last grandchild had been born. My FIL was ecstatic and went to stay with them and took care of the baby, and used to play the music boxes in the house for her, which she loved. When she was 7 month old, he passed away unexpectedly. After the burial, when everyone went home, (they lived in florida, he was buried in Ohio) all of the music boxes in their house began to play, spontaneously, and the baby started to laugh in delight.

My BIL, who is a dentist and very scientific-minded and a big skeptic and non-believer in such things became a believer after that. There was no explanation for this, these music boxes were scattered throughout the house, and there was no sense of fear or anything being haunted or any sense of evil, and nothing ever happened again after that. It was as if my FIL was saying good-bye.

You can believe it or not, but it did happen, and there were 2 witnesses to it.

The only way to tell the difference is to ‘test’ the spirits, as Jesus instructed, if someone saw a dead relative appear to them, and it was giving praise to God, this could not be a demon, on the other hand if it was saying things that contradict scripture or Gods authority, its likely a demon…in the end, its all about the message.

Didn’t Padre Pio see ghosts from Purgatory?

Interesting story!

Yes, he absolutely did. He was regularly allowed visions of souls in purgatory and communed with them.

However, apparitions of those in purgatory, which happens under the purview and authority of God for reasons unknown, is not the same as a poltergeist or haunted house.

Events where furniture is moved, knocking, chains, unearthly noises, etc are heard is typically the work of the demonic.

So 2 ghosts and an exorcist walk into a bar…

Or-
A priest, a rabbi, a ghost and a rabbi are on an airplane…

St. Pio and St. Faustina both received visitations from Poor Souls. Other saints were also visited by them but their names escape me at the present time. The point is that God sometimes permits the souls in purgatory to contact the living to ask for prayers and suffrages - especially Holy Mass. People tend to assume that all ghosts are unclean spirits but that’s not necessarily the case.

But ‘ghosts’ whatever they are, have been around since the OT and probably much longer, as even the apostles thought Jesus was a ghost at first, so them actually having a word for such a thing back then and recognizing what a ghost is, tells me, they may not be people from purgatory, or at least all of them.

I tend to think whatever they are, its probably more complicated than just saying they are souls in purgatory, demons, etc. They may be some natural thing that we do not understand yet…plus, just because some take the form of people, does not necessarily mean they are or were people at one time, for all we know, they could be inter-dimensonal or something equally confusing.
