I won’t believe for a second that a sound individual can be brought up without a father figure. Having lost my father at the age of 12, I have had a long while to think of this.

I pity the children, they are born into lies to accept them as true. They are the really unfortunate ones.

@mro
Can I suggest you not try to speak with authority about natural law when you clearly don’t have a good grasp of what the concept even is? If you are truly serious about your faith I suggest doing some research to find Catholic explanations that can maybe help you to further grasp the points that are being made. The least I think you could do would be to hear the Church out of the subject before you dismiss it. If you search online I know you can find free audio of talks given on the subject.
I never said anything about natural law

He’s stereotyping homosexuals are vile, evil, satanic people… And if you read my little profile it says I’m Catholic

I know all about the Church’s teachings on homosexuality…

The Church is also against all unjustified discrimination (read the Catechism which I doubt you have)

Thank you so much for your honesty, Darran, not to mention for your clear vision of truth.
🙂

Why am I not surpised? Piffle! Sheer and utter nonsense. Furthermore, until you go away and do some homework, as I suggested earlier, you should refrain from posting such outrageous falsehoods.
I’m going to ask again that you remain civil. This seems extraordinarily personal to you, while for me, it’s just a friendly debate.
For you to make the statement that “…homosexuality is a part of natural law” demonstrates that, without a shadow of doubt, you do not know what the Natural Law is. You think the law of nature is the natural law. Well, it isn’t. Catholicism, not to mention the other main religions of the world, are based on Natural Law moral reasoning, not the supposed law of the jungle.
I’m beginning to wonder if you know what natural law is. Natural law is determined by nature, as opposed to positive law, which is determined by man. I would suggest reading Aristotle.

Now if you would like more information regarding natural law and it’s relation to eternal law and how the relation between the two is revealed through divine law, then I suggest you read St. Thomas Aquinas.
Another myth that others besides you have tried to perpetuate. For starters, homosexuality is a human construct. To ascribe it to animals is a classic case of anthropomorphisation. Homosexuality amongst animals is a long standing point that the pro-homosexual lobbiests have tried to run for a long time now. It has been shot down in flames. If you somehow think homosexuall ‘type’ behaviour is normal for animals and so must be for humans, then you should be OK with humans killing and eating their young like many animals do. Are you trying to tell us that same sex parenting in the wild would increase if there were more adoption agencies in the wild? Oh, too funny.
You may find this, a little of this, and some of that helpful.

Nate13 was very nice to you. He suggested you go away and study some Natural Law. He didn’t suggest that becuase you wrote about it, but because of the way you responded to my post about Natural Law.

He also suggested that you go away and study because you seem to think that because I wrote in defense of Natural Law that I was *"…stereotyping homosexuals as vile, evil, satanic people…"*You see, Nate13 knows I never wrote any such thing and he knows you have somehow read into my post what is not there. So take Nate’s advice and head off and do some reading on the subject. OK?

Now this is not the first time you read things into posts that aren’t there. Elizabeth502 picked you up on it. I also picked you up on it a while back and asked you to show me the errors of my ways. You don’t seem to be able to and yet here you are doing it again.

You need to stop reading into other people’s posts what is not there,

If you know all about the Church’s teachings on homosexuality, you’d know that the Bible calls homosexuality an abomination and that St. Paul says practicing homosexuals wont get into heaven. You’d know that the Catechism says of homosexual relationships - “Under no circumstances can they be approved”.
Will you be calling the authors of the Bible and the Catechism evil pharisees? And when God chucks practising homosexuals into hell, what will you sayn to Him?

As for the Natural Law, it is the very foundation of the Catholic Church. Natural Law moral theology is woven right through the Catechism. It was also championed by one of the Catholic Church’s and the world’s most famous Theologians and Philosophers, St. Thomas Aquinas. Will you be calling him and the entire Catholic Church an evil pharisee? You pretty well have to, don’t you think? After all, I say pretty well much the same things as Aquinas and the Church and you called me an evil pharisee. C’mon mro, you’ve gotta address these issues and stop just going with the crowd. If I’m an evil pharisee, then so is the Church and Aquinas. Dare to say it?

And Chrstostim number 83 dismisses the entire concept of Moral Relativism with a straight face too, I suppose?!
I’m not a relativist, if that’s what you mean. Feel free to prove me wrong on that point.
John never mentioned “consent” in his posts.
I know, right? And it sure is strange, too, given that all his opponents had already stated that consent crushed his argument about marrying a dog.
Reversed conditionals is usually a tool used in statements regarding Causation.
According to W. V. Quine (perhaps you’ve heard of him?) a ‘conditional’ is any statement of the form [if X then Y]. A reversed conditional, then, is the corresponding statement [if Y then X], and to confuse the two is a very common fallacy. Hence my conjecture that you yourself might be committing this classic logical error.
If X then no reason for Y does not mean Y doesn’t exist. It just means you can’t find the reason.
Yes, but then again, that’s a universal negative, isn’t it? Good luck proving that.
For example, who are you to discriminate against the personal preferences of individuals who wish to show their love for the object of their love?
Well, if equivocation is kosher, then I suppose anyone should be capable of anything.
You need to at least try to use the concept of “principles” which underly moral conclusions. If you succeed, you may seem similarities and logical consistencies between the two cases…
No doubt there are analogies between the two case. But even one genuine difference between the two is potentially morally relevant. Therefore, unless you want to go through every possible difference between the two cases and show that each one is not morally relevant, there is no way to claim that there can be no reason for accepting the one case while rejecting the other. No way, that is, unless there really are no differences, in which case you’ll find yourself confronted by the absurdity given in point 5 above.
Then pray tell, what will you replace your moral relativism with?
Again, I’m not a relativist.

(Fact check ;))

And by the way, John does not believe that
Wait guys, you’re blaming people for the wrong things. When John replied to me, his quotes got a little wonky. So when mro replied to John, the quotes got, well wonky-er.

Nate exacerbated the situation by quoting mro.

So the one being accused of not understanding natural law is in fact me.

Sorry if I misquoted or misinterpreted what you said, Elizabeth. It was not (consciously) intentional, I assure you.
I never thought that you misquoted or misinterpreted me on this thread. Not at all. 🙂
Also, I like your comment about the data’s not being limited to “doing no harm.” Good researchers in this area should deal with the issue of whether same-sex parenting actually does any good for the child compared to the benefits of the traditional family, which they often do in their comparisons.
Except that the research has already been done, and here is what is known more conclusively now than ever before in human history:

**Men are hard-wired to behave, cognate, respond, act, initiate, avoid, and communicate in ways particular to their sex,

and women are hard-wired in the above areas in an entirely different way.**

The brain research is significant on this. Therefore (again), by definition two of the same sex limits the environment of the child. To find oneself in an accidental situation (such as a widowed father inviting his own widowed father, or single brother or uncle, to move in with him to provide support as an additional surrogate parent is one thing. But to deliberately design an exclusive environment is positively selfish. What many people neglect to understand is that there are not very many homosexual households which include lots of socializing with heterosexual couples; most such households socialize predominantly with others of their social circle. (Just as most heterosexuals do!) This promises a constricted environment for a child. Most homosexuals have actually grown up already with a female mother and a male father. (Yes, that was deliberately redundant.) Given that, it may not particularly occur to them that they are closing off opportunties which were previously made available to themselves, since they have assimilated already a broader interface with the world, prior to adulthood.

Conor, the quote I boxed from mro was a response to John’s comments. (Click on the little blue box next to mro’s name within the quote to determine that.)

I’m going to ask again that you remain civil. This seems extraordinarily personal to you, while for me, it’s just a friendly debate.
If what you write is piffle, I’ll call it piffle. How you react and respond is entirely up to you.
I’m beginning to wonder if you know what natural law is. Natural law is determined by nature, as opposed to positive law, which is determined by man. I would suggest reading Aristotle.
Well, you got one thing right, which is that there is a distinction between man made Positive law and Natural Law. Other than that, what you wrote is piffle.

If Natural Law is determined by nature, then Natural Law is deterministic and mankind can have no Free Will. Think about that! Some philosophers have described Natural Law morality as the use of practical reason. Your statement says otherwise!

You want me to read Aristotle. OK. Which of his works would you suggest?
Now if you would like more information regarding natural law and it’s relation to eternal law and how the relation between the two is revealed through divine law, then I suggest you read St. Thomas Aquinas.
And which of Aquinas’s works would you have me read? He wrote lots, you see.

I would also suggest you read Saurez, the Jesuit and Hugo Grotius, the Protestant. Both were champions of Natural Law and both demonstrated that Natural Law can be discerned without recourse to Divine Law. Even Aquinas hinted at that when he wrote that natural Law relies on the use of man’s reason. What they tell us is what enables even some atheists to recognise and accept Natural Law. I’d also suggest you hunt up John Finnis, a contemporary Australian Natural Law Philosopher who wrote Natural Law and Natural Rights.

Now off you go and do that homework!

I’m so sick of some of the people on here… Fine ya know what I don’t need the Church and her stupid celibacy!!! If I want to go off and get AIDs and die that’s my prerogative…

OK, Elizabeth, I wasn’t entirely right either; I just went back and checked. Nate didn’t quote anyone.

Look at posts 53 and 54; that’s where the confusion began.

Regarding the research you point out, I agree that more is known today than ever before about the biopsychosociocultural causes of gender differences. (As you know, the causes are not only brain-based hard-wiring, though that does exist.) However, research has also found that some of the gender differences, particularly with regard to cognitive processes, which have been maintained and perpetuated due to social stereotypes, have been shown to be false. Moreover, gender differences interact with chronological age, tending to dissipate in older heterosexual couples. This process is also thought to be multidetermined. Further, there is significant overlap in range between normal male and normal female cognition, affect, and behavior. And finally, studies on the homosexual brain (male and female) are as yet inconclusive with respect to its influence on thinking, feeling, and acting. Although there are some solid gender differences that cannot be denied, some of the research has already produced and is likely to yield in the future many surprises. The “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus” beliefs, discussed by some pop psychologists, are far from the scientific consensus.

Focus on the underlined part. That’s what’s important because that will not change, no matter what social agenda anyone has to change it.

I’m shocked that you would think so little of my intellect  that you would even refer to such a superficial author as John Gray (despite how cute he is ;)). Instead, read Brain Sex or something even more sophisticated.

Roles do not eradicate sex differences. And I don’t have much patience with anyone who might be interested in encouraging such an eradication.

I purposely refrained from mentioning the author’s name, to avoid any possibility of a lawsuit! But OK, I’ll split the legal fees with you. (You can’t believe I’m demeaning your intellect, Elizabeth, nor Gray’s for that matter. All these popular psychologists are shrewd business people.) I agree that social roles cannot eradicate sex differences; they simply take the edge off a bit. And there is good research to show that biological differences trump learning in several instances. My point, nonetheless, is that the research verdict is not in, even biologically speaking, with regard to gender differences. The thing about research and science, however, is that the verdict is NEVER in, and we have to live our lives in the meantime.

I must ask simply out of curiosity–as other members have done about some of your other comments–what this comment, in the form of a very short rant, has to do with the issue being discussed? I apologize if that was uncharitable to a new member, but is there a connection?

Haha – against you or against him? 😃

And even when it’s supposedly “all” “in,” it will not have proven that men can seriously cross over to women, and vice-versa. Yes, I know about transgenderism and the rare phenomenon of intersexed persons. But the general population is what we’re talking about here – not the exceptional outliers.

In fact, it’s even more wicked, in my mind, if part of the Gay Agenda is to dumb-down or minimize the fundamental sex differences that are both apparent and researched, and to use same-sex parenting, and “procreation” (high-tech babies) in furtherance of such an attempt, “hoping” that such children will grow up “not quite male” or “not quite female.” It is truly an effront to our God to do so. If God had had a different plan for the sexes and wanted us to “experiment” with that, he would have revealed that to us.

Well then since you didn’t have a father figure for all of your formative years, does that mean you are not a sound individual? And if not, why should anyone listen to anything you have to say?
