The use of types is established in the bible.

Jn 3:14 “14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up,”

Mt 12:40 “40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

There are some more, but I can’t recall off the top of my head. The Early Church Fathers can provide valuable insight. If you can get a copy of the Navarre Bible series, the comentary is excellent and provides a look backt to the Early Church Fathers.

There is some evidence that types were consciously understood as early as the time of the Psalms, around 1000 B.C.: The Psalms contain what appear to be consciously-contrived “Index Verses,” didactically indicating the standard meaning of certain types.

Some of the prophets are also clearly teaching typology, in their books.

Romans 5:14**
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

John 6:31-58 (New King James Version)
31Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”'a]

32Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

1 Peter 3:20-22 (New International Version)
20who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and **this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you **also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledgea] of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Mark 1:8
I baptize you with Or in] water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

There’s also a verse about circumcision being a type of baptism, the first of the flesh and the second of the heart - but I can’t remember where it is…

God the Holy Spirit 😃 when He inspired the authors of the Old Testament as to what was to be fulfilled in the New Testament.👍

How about the who and when concerning the Ark of the covenant/ Virgin Mary type comparison?
 
Though some of the folks here speak with great confidence about Bible types and word pictures, in fact the knowledge of types, especially in the Catholic Church, is crude and disorganized.

I’ve spent about ten years now studying them. Once they are understood, the Bible really opens-up to its reader.
