Typhoon menaces east China coast

The storm made landfall in Taizhou at 0650GMT and is expected to pound the historic city of Hangzhou, as well as Jinhua, Shaoxing, Jiaxing and Huzhou cities, Xinhua reports. Authorities in Shanghai, China’s financial centre north of Zhejiang, have also instructed people in vulnerable housing to relocate ahead of heavy rains forecast for Sunday and Monday…

Khanun, the No. 15 typhoon of this year has slammed into Taizhou city of east China’s Zhejiang Province at 14:50 p.m. Sunday, the provincial source announced. The typhoon, with force exceeding 12, will sweep the cities of Taizhou, Jinhua, Shaoxing, Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou and then enter the Taihu Lake. The province has so far evacuated 814,267 people to safer places, said sources with the provincial flood control and droughtrelief headquarters, adding that about 35,409 ships and vessels have returned to ports.

The headquarters still issued an urgent notice urging local people to prepare for the possible mountain torrents and other geological disasters which might inflicted by typhoon and torrential rains. The provincial meteorological bureau forecast that in the coming six hours, strong winds at or above force 12 will sweep thesea waters in the coast of Zhejiang.

The coastal and inland areas as well as the rivers and lakes nearby the Hangzhou Bay of Zhejiang will be struck by strong windswith force hitting 8 to 12. The cities of Wenzhou, Taizhou, Zhoushan, Shaoxing and Ningbo will suffer from torrential rains. The provincial government urged relevant departments to fully prepare against the typhoon and try every means to protect people’s life and property.

Typhoon Khanun was expected to batter major cities in the coastal province and neighbouring Shanghai, Xinhua news agency said, citing local meteorological bureaus…

More than a million residents in areas affected by the typhoon have been moved to safer places, and more than 37,625 ships and boats have returned to harbour, according to Zhejiang authorities.The commercial metropolis of Shanghai had evacuated more than 100,000 people and upgraded its typhoon emergency warning from yellow to red, Xinhua said. All Shanghai schools would be closed on Monday, a first for the city, Xinhua said. The Zhejiang provincial government has called on relevant departments to be fully prepared for floods and to safeguard life and property.It also warned people to be aware of landslides, which could result from the torrential rains…

Earlier this month Typhoon Talim left at least 124 dead and 31 missing after slowly churning its way through the provinces of Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Henan and Hubei.Some 19 million residents in those provinces were affected and 1.84 million of them had to be evacuated, according to state media. Landslides and floods destroyed or damaged huge areas of farmland and some 374,000 houses.

In the typhoon and torrential rains, more than 7,000 houses collapsed in the province. The ministry said it is gathering detailed information about the typhoon and damages it has caused.Khanun has forced at least 1.051 million residents in Zhejiang to evacuate and 35,000 ships to seek shelter. Khanun, the 15th this year, slammed into the province on Sunday. The total economic losses caused by the typhoon was estimated at 6.89 billion yuan (US$849 million), said officials of the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarter.
As of 6:00 a.m. Monday, typhoon Khanun battered four cities, 29 counties and 357 towns in the province, affecting 5.11 million people. Strong winds and rainstorms inflicted by the tropical storm flattened 7,468 houses, damaged many water conservancy facilities and cropland, according to the headquarters.

Khanun slammed into Taizhou City of Zhejiang Province at 14:50 p.m. Sunday, bringing strong wind and rainstorms to the province when it churned through. Meteorologists described Khanun as the strongest typhoon that hit China this year, bringing force 12 gales in eight hours after it battered the Chinese mainland. Zhejiang reported a rainfall of over 400 mm recorded at three observation stations.

In Shanghai, more than 160,000 people were evacuated before the typhooon began to affect the city, bringing in heavy rains.
