“The University of Michigan won’t make any admissions decisions for the fall term until Wednesday, giving itself some time to figure out what to do now that a federal appeals court has rejected an attempt to delay the implementation of new rules that ban affirmative action programs in public hiring and college admissions in Michigan.”

The same tactic was used by Souther Universites back in the 60s when they were told they would have to admit Blacks.

I think they should admit people based on academic records not on what color your skin is…

Martin Luther King and all the Civil Rights leaders of his are would agree with you. We have went from a belief that Whites cant learn with Blacks in the room to Whites cant learn without blacks in the room.

First they got a court order delaying the law, now they are saying that they will not admit anyone? More delays of the will of the people. Next they will say enrollment is down due to the new law, not because of their actions.

that is really silly! Who cares what the person sitting next to me is…as long as they can keep up…for that matter as long as I can keep up:D

I wonder what would happen when my white son applied to colleges if he marked down that he was “black” or some other race…would it up hi chances of being admitted instead of stating he was “white”

i was going to apply to U of M for undergrad back in '98…then i got the actual application and the “point system” they used. for instance, i didn’t get to add points for being a minority or for being a legacy. in fact, even with my good GPA and ACT scores, i barely had enough points to be considered.

however, i’m sure my high school friends from affluent Filipino families got to add some points, as well as my best friend from grade school (African-American) whose dad is a lawyer. classmates whose family members were currently attending/had gone to U of M got to add points as well.

while i’m not totally against affirmative action programs, i don’t believe most of them help those who are in most need.

at any rate, i went to another university for both undergrad and grad school, for less than half the tuition. a very diverse campus, i don’t recall a point system such as U of M’s…

Affirmative Action is simply taking positive steps to bring into the economic mainstream groups who have previously been unfairly excluded. There are two steps to Affirmative Action:
  1. Make sure every child in America gets a first-class education.
  2. Admit, select, hire, and promote people based on individual merit.
Note that step 1 is a government responsibility – we have Public Schools in this country. If the government fails to carry out its responsibility, there can be no Affirmative Action.

Well and fairly put.

Always try to look unimportant. The enemy may be low on ammunition.

The misuse of affirmative action in this country is becuase the govt fails miserably in #1-especially with minority students. Rather than try to fix the schools they rig the sytstem so their failure to educate does not keep the kid out of college.

Update:
U-M sued over admissions delay
Pro-Prop 2 group says college’s opposition has led to ‘urgent need’ for court to force compliance.

A pro-Proposal 2 group launched another legal challenge against the University of Michigan, this time in a state court, asking a judge to order the university to immediately comply with the new constitutional amendment.

In papers filed Thursday in Washtenaw Circuit Court, the Center for Individual Rights said U-M’s “vigorous opposition” and “recalcitrance toward this duly enacted law has created an urgent need for this court to issue a declaration of the university’s duties and compel its compliance with the law.”

As we say in the Infantry, it all rolls down hill. The government fails and then blames the citizenry for its failures.
