U.S. bishops consultant has ties to homosexual lobby

A consultant for the USCCB’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, which oversees the controversial Catholic Campaign for Human Development, has been a public supporter of pro-homosexual legislation that was actively opposed by the country’s bishops, LifeSiteNews has recently learned.
John Sweeney, President Emeritus of the AFL-CIO, and a former five-term President of the trade federation, revealed his pro-homosexual position in a 2001 essay titled, “The Growing Alliance Between Gay and Union Activists.”
Sweeney wrote of his support for a 1983 AFL-CIO resolution condemning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
“At the time, I was president of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which had sponsored the resolution. I rose to speak in favor of it,” he wrote. “And I am proud to say that the labor movement has since made many advances in the fight for gay and lesbian rights.”
Under Sweeney’s leadership, the AFL-CIO Executive Council issued a resolution opposing the 2005 Federal Marriage Amendment, which would have defined marriage in the United States as a union between one man and one woman.

I am outraged but not surprised by his stance but wonder why the Bishops didn’t investigate his views before he was as advisor!

I can tell you as a former member of the AFL-CIO his views were kept under wraps from most of the union members.

I do remember though that the company I worked for bent over backwards to accommodate homosexual workers, even to the extent of letting them put objectionable photos etc. at their desks, but at the time I believed that most of the companies were doing the same thing.

Have no problem with them as individuals or co-workers, but some of the things the company approved were over the top and now I believe part of this was because of the unions pushing this agenda.

This is another reason for me not to contribute to their collection. I contribute to other Catholic charity organizations which I know are actually helping poor people instead.

Not surprising. Mr. Sweeney and the whole union movement are of the left. The radicals of the 60’s are now in charge. Gone are the days when the unions actually believed in the U.S. Constitution, or religion for that matter. Their leftist ideology has become their faith. Too bad a Catholic organization saw fit to seek seek his consultation. And I don’t like this “social justice” ideology either. It is just a front for more leftist, socialiast garbage. Social justice comes from us as individuals when we personally help our fellow human beings. I don’t want my government involved in this, or church/government involvement either.

Personally, I just wish this forum would enact a ban on citing to lifesitenews.

I have difficulty understanding why his past or present views on homsexuality forever bar him from advising the USCCB on health care, immigration, and domestic justice. I’m satisfied to believe that the bishops have every right to seek advice from anyone at any time - even if they disagree with some of that advice - so long as the bishops think that advice might be helpful.

But then I suppose there are those people who think we should only listen to advice from people who agree with us 100% and have lived such pure lives they qualify as living saints.

Old Story, used to attack the USCCB

That’s very open-minded of you ,perhaps you think censorship is a virtue ? What’s the matter , can’t you handle the truth ?
Oh , and where do you stand on the " Fairness Doctrine " ?
I have difficulty understanding why his past or present views on homsexuality forever bar him from advising the USCCB on health care, immigration, and domestic justice.
Let’s see , as the head of the AFL-CIO in 1995 he vigorously opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment , which the USCCB supported . What does that reveal about his social views and political views ? Tell me , what affect do you think legalized same-sex marriage combined with no-fault divorce will have on marriage and the family ? Are you old enough to remember the no-fault divorce champions telling us that no-fault divorce would be GOOD for the children ? What do you think Sweeney wants when it comes to health care ? A single payer system that would destroy our health care system ? Why do you want a health care system like Canada’s or the UK ?Last summer , the president of the Canadian Medical Association ( a physician ) declared in an interview that , " the Canadian health care system is broken " .
Why would the brightest students invest their time and money to attend medical school and then work in a medical system that is " single payer " , caps their incomes AND dictates HOW they should practice medicine ? I’ll give that system more consideration when lawyers demand a "single payer " system that caps their incomes and dictates how they can practice law . When do you think Eric Holder will champion this cause ?

Re: Immigration , do you think organized labor has been strong in opposing open borders ?

Re: " Domestic Justice " , I’m not even sure what you mean . Is this a new euphemism for " liberation theology " ? When I read/hear words like , “domestic” , " social" , “economic” , " environmental " et al added to or describing " justice " I suspect a " Frankfurt School " con game is being played on me ! There are four Cardinal Virtues , " cardinal " , from the latin , " cardinalis " meaning hinge , that which a thing turns on , it’s principal point . And they are , Prudence , Temperance , Fortitude and Justice . As a cardinal virtue ,justice needs NO qualifier , there is either justice or there is not . I don’t want some warmed over Antonio Gramsci , George Lukacs , Herbert Marcuse and/or Theodor Adorno leftist claptrap influencing the USCCB and/or the Catholic Church . The Frankfurt School is the enemy of the Catholic Church . I have no patience for the Frankfurt School’s " Critical Theory " .

Oh , I almost forgot . Mr. Sweeney was also a past president of the Service Employees International Union ( SEIU ) . The SEIU is a radical leftist organization that has little if any respect for the US Constitution . The current president of the SEIU , Andy Stern , was ( at least for a time ) the most frequent visitor to the Obama White House .
I’ll never forget the TV coverage of the unions taking over the Wisconsin Statehouse earlier this year . The statehouse was closed to demonstrators but a Democrate representative’s staff member opened the window to their first floor office and allowed demonstrators to climb throuhg the opened window . One of the demonstrators climbing through the window was wearing an SEIU jacket . I would make all the unions who demonstrated at the Wisconsin Statehouse pay for the damages they caused , rather than have it come out of the state’s general fund . Now that would be justice .

One last question , how do Sweeney’s , the AFL-CIO and the SEIU"s views on " domestic justice " and social programs conform with the Catholic Church’s principle of Subsidiarity ?

Sigh. I don’t know why LSN seems to have made it their secondary mission to foster suspicion and resentment of our bishops among faithful and orthodox Catholics. 😦

Their primary mission of reporting on pro-life stories that would otherwise never be reported on is so important and necessary. It really makes me sad to seem them put out stories like this.

LSN doesn’t need to “foster” suspicion and resentment against the USCCB … its own actions are capable enough of that already. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development’s consistent funding of pro-homosexual, pro-abortion, and Marxist organizations is a good example of the problems coming from there. I mean … the publication of a “Stations of the Cross” that is nothing more than a HUGE commercial plug for the CCHD was disgusting!

God Bless Life Site News for being willing to stand in the cross-hairs of heterodox and dissenting “Catholics” by reporting on the rot going on there.

Standing by and ignoring the problems at the USCCB while pointing at all the “good” they do would be like loudly complaining about people trying to tell the authorities that there are termites in the White House and they’ve eaten away a lot of the foundation!

Ridiculous!

It is not just heterodox or dissenting Catholics that have a problem with LSN. I am neither. I do love my bishops, though. I hate seeing them maligned with such inaccurate, broad brush strokes.

Take this article for example. Maybe it’s just me, but I walk away from the article feeling like the intent was to make the reader feel “those lousy bishops are at it again.” I can think of many explanations that do not reflect negatively on any single bishop let alone on the whole lot of them. The guy is someone they consulted, not an employee of the USCCB. They probably consulted him on whatever his area of expertise happens to be in. It’s not uncommon to consult experts in their field. It doesn’t mean you listen to them nor that their (name removed by moderator)ut will change Catholic teaching.

I’m not saying it’s not a mistake to have this guy as a consultant. It very well could be. It just seems like these LSN stories offer one more excuse for those who dislike their bishops to wring their hands and lament. 🤷

I do not equate the USCCB with “The Bishops.” Whenever I see USCCB, I see “liberal, heterodox bureaucrats who direct policies on BEHALF of the bishops, many times, without their knowedge.”

But this isn’t just about the consulting that Sweeney did for the USCCB … he was also given a bully-pulpit to speak to Catholics through the USCCB, helped run events with the USCCB, and received honors from the USCCB. This is a problem, and it’s endemic of the capitulation we’ve seen through the CCHD.

Here’s a question … why is John Sweeney a consultant for the USCCB and pro-life leaders not? Why do SO MANY things related to socialist endeavors, including lobbying, come out of the USCCB, and lip service is paid to the pro-life cause of the Church?

The Sweeney article is apropos of the rot in the bureaucracy, and I think it’s important for this rot to be brought to life before the whole building collapses!

… blah, blah, blah (sorry, had to cut quote for length). . . Re: " Domestic Justice " , I’m not even sure what you mean . Is this a new euphemism for " liberation theology " ? I’ve got no intention of arguing politics with you. I’ve been around long enough, and have a broad enough set of experiences, that I’ve developed my sense of political principles and I’m pretty comfortable with them. It is sufficient for me to say that you’d be very, very wrong if you tried to hang the label of “leftist” or “liberal” or, frankly, even “democrat” on someone like me.

What I will note, however, is what’s clear from the article: The phrase “domestic justice” isn’t mine; it’s a reference to the USCCB’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Social Development. Since I’m not a fan of Orwellian suppositions, I thought it would be helpful to provide at least one informational link that helps describe the scope of that committee. It is HERE.

Best wishes, and

Well , blah , blah , blah yourself . You did in fact use the term, "domestic justice " in your post that I originally responded to . Why did you employ it ? The term ’ domestic justice " was not defined in the article the OP linked to ; it was mentioned , but not actually defined in the web site you and the OP’s article links to . So , in the absence of an official ( or even semi- official ) definition , mine stands ( power abhors a vacuum ) .

So , again , why did you employ " domestic justice " and what do you mean by it ? If you don’t think it’s a leftist euphemism( and the fruit of the Frankfurt School ), explain why ?

Please detail in my 1st response to You where I ascribed ANY personal political position(s) to you , as an individual ?

I wrote: “I have difficulty understanding why his past or present views on homsexuality forever bar him from advising the USCCB on health care, immigration, and domestic justice.”

And I wrote that because Mr. Sweeney is, according to the article, “A consultant for the USCCB’s Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development.” And since the article also declared:
In addition to being listed on the USCCB’s website as a consultant for the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, Sweeney co-authored a 2000 statement on U.S. Immigration Policy along with Roger Cardinal Mahoney and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, and worked with the USCCB in creating a 2009 document on health care.
I therefore thought it was consistent with the article to write that “I have difficulty understanding why his past or present views on homsexuality forever bar him from advising the USCCB on health care, immigration, and domestic justice.”

And since “domestic justice” is not (so far as I know) a term of art, I also thought it would be nice to provide a link to the USCCB’s statement on the “Mandate and Goals” of that committee.

I’m apologize if I confused anyone with my earlier post.

Do you realize that I addressed this in my post # 6 ? And in my post # 6 I told you why I believe you are wrong in asserting that Mr. Sweeney’s views on homosexuality don’t in fact preclude ( with prejudice ) him from rendering said service to the USCCB on health care . immigration and domestic justice ? I enumerated in detail my reasons , which you have not engaged , let alone rebutted .

Why have you avoided my challenge on how Mr. Sweeney’s ( as well as the AFL-CIO and SEIU , of which he is a past president ) views on "domestic justice " conform with the church’s principle of subsidiarity ?

My friend, in my last post I was merely trying to answer this question, which you posed to me.
So , again , why did you employ " domestic justice " and what do you mean by it ? If you don’t think it’s a leftist euphemism( and the fruit of the Frankfurt School ), explain why ?
I’ve no intention of trying to defend the AFL-CIO’s or SEIU’s vaguely described views on “domestic justice,” which you apparently fully impute to Mr. Sweeney, against your view understanding of the church’s principle of subsidiarity. Nor to I intend to relieve you of your belief that the SEIU (and other unions?) are leftist organizations with little or no respect for the constitution - or, perhaps, just your view of what the constitution means. It’s not for me to make the defense - if indeed one is even necessary.

And I’ve already written that I’m not going to engage in political debate. Mistakenly, you seem to think that I have some interest in Mr. Sweeney’s services to the USCCB. But, I don’t care one way or another if Mr. Sweeney advises USCCB or not. I’m sure that you have taken the opportunity to educate yourself on what services Mr. Sweeney provides to USCCB, and I’m sure you’ve read the 2000 document on Immigration that he co-authored and the 2009 document on Health Care that consulted on, which is probably why you have such strong opinions about him. I commend you for your diligence. Alas, I don’t have the time or inclination to so educate myself regarding whom the USCCB’s invite onto their board of advisors. And so being morally unable to defend or criticize someone without making an effort to understand the issue and the person’s relation to it, I suffer a disadvantage that you most certainly have overcome.
