Keep in mind who will have to pay for this. If obamacare had excluded funding for abortion, our progressive bishops would have been in favor of that too.the democrats are trying to force this thing through before the republicans take control. i’m concerned the catholic faith as being overly focused on politics to the point of losing its moral authority.
if the church focused more on catechising the faithful they wouldn’t need to speak out on every progressive minded piece of legislation.
Immigration overall is a slight nett financial benefit to the country of immigration.Keep in mind who will have to pay for this.
As would the bishops in every other country. Every other civilised and reasonably well resourced country has long had a universal health care system. The fact that it’s taken the USA until the 21st century to get one should be a source of deep national shame. If obamacare had excluded funding for abortion, our progressive bishops would have been in favor of that too.
Certainly the government should. The bishops already are if it’s a Catholic college. My Grandaughter needs help paying for college next year. Are the government and Bishops going to help her out? Discrimination?
And it certainly includes you. Many people get Social Justice and Socialism mixed up. That includes some of the clergy.
Excuse me. Did Christ tell the Roman Government to tax it’s citizens so the poor, the immigrants etc. could be helped? I think he meant charity to be on a one to one basis. Forced financial/health care of the poor etc. is socialism as is the DREAM act. Where has Universal Health care gotten the people of Europe and other countries. Poor medical care. We had one of the best medical systems in the world and it is being taken down by bo’s socialist agenda. There was NO bi partisan vote on the health care because the Pubs. would not agree with bo’s socialist agenda, nor were they invited to do so. All was done behind closed doors. I resent being FORCED by the government to perform what should be Christian charity. The only reason Durbin et al are doing this is to get more votes. They will not get mine.Immigration overall is a slight nett financial benefit to the country of immigration.
Oh yes, it will mean there’ll be a smaller pool of illegal immigrants to employ as dirt-cheap labour, whose bosses tell them that if they complain about their low wages the boss will dob them in to the Immigration Department and have them deported. I suppose when Lincoln freed the slaves it also meant the country’s employers faced an astronomically increasing wages bill. That didn’t make freeing the slaves the wrong thing to do.
As would the bishops in every other country. Every other civilised and reasonably well resourced country has long had a universal health care system. The fact that it’s taken the USA until the 21st century to get one should be a source of deep national shame.

“Give a man a fish, you’ll feed him for a day: Give a man a sword, and he’ll starve to death fighting over a fish.”“Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach him how to fish and he will always eat.”
Paraphrased from Father John Corapi
Hey everybody. All the best countries are using program X. You should too.Every other civilised and reasonably well resourced country has long had a universal health care system. The fact that it’s taken the USA until the 21st century to get one should be a source of deep national shame.
Ancient Roman government is a little different from the government we have now in the U.S. I wonder what Jesus would have done or said in a more free land myself but perhaps his time was the best time for him to live on earth. I just wanted to chime in with thatDid Christ tell the Roman Government to tax it’s citizens so the poor, the immigrants etc. could be helped?
“Excuse me” (oh how I love the unintentionally ironical USAmerican use of that expression) would you please show us where in the New Testament our Lord said that it’s immoral for a government to help the poor, sick, immigrants, and other needy people and that all help for them must be done one-on-one, not collectively?Excuse me. Did Christ tell the Roman Government to tax it’s citizens so the poor, the immigrants etc. could be helped? I think he meant charity to be on a one to one basis.
Reality check: Is it Europe or is it the USA where infant mortality rates are higher than in many impoverished Third World countries? Is it Europe or the USA where the #1 cause of bankruptcy is the inability to pay for medical bills? Is it Europe or the USA which has been virtually black-banned by travel insurance companies for tourists who are elderly or have a serious medical condition? (This happened to my parents, they were told because of their age that they could travel anywhere in the world with the single exception of the USA because they couldn’t buy travel medical insurance to go there.)Forced financial/health care of the poor etc. is socialism as is the DREAM act. Never fear, no matter how much “socialism” there is, there will always be plenty of opportunity and scope for you to exercise Christian charity to those in need of your personal help.I resent being FORCED by the government to perform what should be Christian charity.
This hilariously bombastic chauvinism is the funniest comment have seen on CAF, but sadly I suspect you actually meant it seriously. I’m having trouble thinking of even one country which would not have been able to stand on its feet without help from the USA. I can certainly think of several for which the USA’s “help” made it much more difficult for them to stand on their feet.I am not ashamed of what the US has accomplished for the world in past decades. We have helped every nation on this Earth to stand on its feet.

Actually an ancient Chinese proverb which has been in English for centuries.Paraphrased from Father John Corapi
“Hey everybody. Every other country that can possibly afford it is paying for X. Therefore our country should definitely not do it, they must all be wrong because axiomatically our country has always been right about everything.”Hey everybody. All the best countries are using program X. You should too.
Terrible reasoning.

Please cite this.
At first glance it would seem that an increase in the labor supply, (labor demand held constant) decreases the average wage.
Furthermore, if a nation with generous social services like the US, strain is added to an already struggling system.
If immigration were a net benefit, then why doesn’t every country have complete open borders?, i.e. allow immigration to essentially infinity. It is a net benefit right? Are there declining returns to scale?
It sounds like you are taking a soundbite from DailyKos.
The way to prevent that is to have better laws enforcing the payment of fair wages to all workers (just as all the popes have been calling for for the past 120 years) not to discriminate against people of certain races.I am against the DREAM act because I´m against the immigration of hispanics in US and all immigration in Europe. Why? Because the huge immigration that we have had have lowered the wages

Of course it shouldn’t need saying that the present status of the USA as by far the richest and most powerful country in the world is primarily a direct result of the massive amount of immigration to it over the past 200 years.
Of course there are a large number of unpredictable variables at play and it doesn’t mean that **every **country will always have a nett benefit from any amount of immigration under all circumstances. But the USA, Australia nd Western Europe are benefitting economically under the current circumstances.
No, that’s nothing to do with it. It’s a matter of the application of Catholic doctrine regarding the basic human rights of all men regardless of their religion. The Catholic bishops of Australia and Western Europe are saying exactly the same thing about immigrants there, even though there the majority of illegal immigrants are Moslems. Most of the children of illegals are of mexican heritage. Which means that they are likely catholic. Of course catholic bishops support catholic young men and women becoming US citizens. Why is there any surprise about this?
Father Corapi didn’t claim he owned the quote. Since I didn’t live in ancient China, I will listen to Father Corapi’s take on it…“Excuse me” (oh how I love the unintentionally ironical USAmerican use of that expression) ()It was not unintentional(would you please show us where in the New Testament our Lord said that it’s immoral for a government to help the poor, sick, immigrants, and other needy people and that all help for them must be done one-on-one, not collectively? (Would you please show me where He said it is moral?)
He certainly said that people have a duty to pay taxes to governments (even a foreign government in military occupation – in that respect He went beyond what the United Nations and modern international law allows). He said, "Render to Caesar what IS Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.) More is owed to the upstanding lawful citizens of this country than those who unfortunately were brought here ILLEGALY by their parents. Let them apply for citizenship, get a job and work their way through college. That is the way many young legal citizens of the US do it today. If He did say what you claim, His Apostles certainly didn’t get the message, but did the exact opposite. In fact at the first pope’s invocation, God imposed the death penalty on those who didn’t completely comply with this “socialism”: see Acts of the Apostles 2:44-45; 4:32 – 5:11. I would suggest you get the History of the Catholic Church straightened out in your mind. How about going to www.realcatholictv.com or listening to Father John Corapi’s tapes.
Reality check: Is it Europe or is it the USA where infant mortality rates are higher than in many impoverished Third World countries? Give me the statistics and the source. Is it Europe or the USA where the #1 cause of bankruptcy is the inability to pay for medical bills? As I understand it, Greece, much of Europe is bankrupt with the US soon to follow not only becuse of inability to pay medical bills, but because of greed and overspending. Is it Europe or the USA which has been virtually black-banned by travel insurance companies for tourists who are elderly or have a serious medical condition? (This happened to my parents, they were told because of their age that they could travel anywhere in the world with the single exception of the USA because they couldn’t buy travel medical insurance to go there.) Source please and was this as decision made in Europe, or in the US?
Never fear, no matter how much “socialism” there is, there will always be plenty of opportunity and scope for you to exercise Christian charity to those in need of your personal help. There would be many more opportunities for many more people for Christian acts if they were not being taught to ignore their neighbor and the neighbor demanding that everything be given to them by the government.,
If only governments would “force” their citizens to exercise a few more Christian duties, what a much better world this would be. Gee, I thought it was separation of state and religion. Now you are telling me, the government should get religion?

Okay, let’s think back to the 40s. Normandy, the Bulge, Berlin., Poland, France, England. Where would any of the European nations be today if the US had not pushed Hitler and nazism off the map, at least for a while. Name one country where the Citizens of the US have not given their life’s blood to help other nations. The Phillipines?, Iwo Jima? Bosnia?

Ahhhh so. No boundaries, anywhere? anytime? If I were to go to Mexico without proper documentation, I would be arrested and jailed w/o trial, because I would be illegally there. Ergo, in shorthand, I would be an illegal.
And a person may have broken a law, but there is no such thing as an “illegal person”. They are not “illegals”.
