VATICAN CITY (RNS) As Pope Francis led the world’s cardinals in talks aimed at shifting the church’s emphasis from following rules to preaching mercy, a senior American cardinal took to the pages of the Vatican newspaper on Friday (Feb. 21) to reassure conservatives that Francis remains opposed to abortion and gay marriage.
Cardinal Raymond Burke acknowledged that the pope has said the church “cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods.” But in his toughly worded column in L’Osservatore Romano, the former archbishop of St. Louis blasted those “whose hearts are hardened against the truth” for trying to twist Francis’ words to their own ends.
Burke, an outspoken conservative who has headed the Vatican’s highest court since 2008, said Francis in fact strongly backs the church’s teaching on those topics. He said the pope is simply trying to find ways to convince people to hear the church’s message despite the “galloping de-Christianization in the West.”

The remarkable thing is that someone feels that he has to re-state that the Pope supports the teachings of Christ.

…And in other world news, the Pope finally comes out of the closet. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we’re afraid to tell you that the Pope is indeed a Catholic. We know this will shock and appall most of our viewers, but given the evidence we can no longer deny it…

I will be blunt and I know I will be villified but here it goes:

Pope Francis does not need Cardinal Burke to legitimize his orthodoxy to the teachings of the Church to anyone.

If anyone seriously feels Pope Francis was not “legit” until Cardinal Burke spoke, the problem is not with the Pope.

Francis makes it 267 in a row. Why does this surprise anyone? I predict #268 will also fail to change the Church’s basic understanding of the human nnature.

Shocking news out of Rome: Water is wet and wait for it - The Pope is indeed Catholic.

And water will stop being wet before the gates of hell prevail over the Church. We have that on the highest authority.

I agree with the sentiment and I’ll bet you and me both feel our eyes start to roll whenever the Media (and its confused viewership) takes the pope’s statements out of context. In my mind, all of this pope’s comments that I’ve seen have been both plainly orthodox and part-and-parcel with what previous popes and theologians have been saying for years.

But granted that, I don’t think it’s fair to criticize Cardinal Burke for stepping out and saying that the pope is orthodox. If the media and its viewers keep getting the pope’s message wrong, if they keep saying that he’s innovating or downplaying matters of doctrine and morals, I think Catholics have an obligation to point out that he isn’t, and that’s basically what Cardinal Burke is doing. I don’t think that means the pope is unable to “legitimize his orthodoxy” and we must do it for him – we just need to set the record straight when the Media gets it wrong. And for that, I think Burke should be thanked.

The secular mainstream media has been working hard to give the public the false impression that Pope Francis would be for these things.

Wow. Really? Do people really think the College
of Cardinals would have elected a Pope who approved of these
things?

👍

I doubt too many here have any doubts about the legitimacy of Pope Francis, though. 🙂

But I know places on the Internet where you’d be derided for saying this, so I understand where you’re coming from. 😉

Wow. I’d love to see the mainstream media repeat this. “You mean he’s not… gasp… a liberal!?”

Peace,
Ed

I know, I know, it’s horrible. But worry not, there will be another election as soon as he dies. Maybe then they can get someone more progressive in the office.

:rotfl:

You know, I really shouldn’t laugh at this considering the fact that some people actually think it works like that… but seriously, it’s so absurd…

It’s an attempt by the left that is part wishful thinking and part an attempt at public deception by way of secular mainstream media propaganda to sell abortion and so-called same-sex marriage to the Catholics who are weak, unsure, and uneducated in the Catholic faith. This is also an attempt to put pressure on the Pope. Because if they can convince the public that the Pope is only good because he is in support of these things then the pressure is on the Pope to deliver on these expectations or be hated. The liberal mainstream media used to love Russia when it was communist. And, with the hope that Russia would return to communism, they loved Russian President Putin so much that they named him Time magazine’s 2007 person of the year. Now, look how fast they turned on him after he rejected the gay agenda.

Thanks for the laugh and giggle:thumbsup:😃

In a shocking revelation today, the Pope was also found to believe in one God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible, etc.

I think some people need to be reminded that Pope Francis opposes homosexual ‘marriage’ and abortion.
