BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany’s coordinator for transatlantic ties has criticised U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany.

Trump has ordered the U.S. military to remove 9,500 troops from Germany, a senior U.S. official said on Friday.

“This is completely unacceptable, especially since nobody in Washington thought about informing its NATO ally Germany in advance,” Peter Beyer, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives, told the Rheinische Post newspaper.

That is a pretty shabby way to treat a long standing ally. Obviously, the US is free to relocate forces from Germany if it wants to, but basic diplomacy and common sense would tel you this is something you should probably coordinate with Germany.

Another impetuous action by a thin skinned, unskilled diplomat who thinks he is Caesar.

Leftist democrats - Republicans are always want war.

Trump gets elected by promising a more isolationalist/nationalist approach, including the promise of reducing our global footprint/involvement in wars.

Leftist democrats “Another impetuous action by a dictator. HE’S A DICTATOR!!!”

Reasonable people: Hmmm…not sure that’s a good idea, but why can’t the EU protect themselves?

I read someone write, this is a bit because of Germany not paying their full share. So, we will see. Just thought I’d post it. Thank you for responding. Expenses should not all fall on the Americans and Poland and other countries try to pay their fair share and would even host bases.

I would agree with someone who might say we already have many bases. Too many? I don’t know. I myself don’t mind an extended presence of the US in the world. That’s just me.

it is about whose money, why does it have to be American money?

why shouldn’t the Germans and others pay for their own security?
Trump altruism…gotta be a buck to be made or you are on your own!

how about, pay your fair share?

why does the American worker have to pay when the German worker doesn’t?

it really is about the little man and his taxes

I’m not sure the issue is the withdrawal of US troops, it’s that it apparently wasn’t coordinated with the German government. Doesn’t exactly make it easy for us to negotiate SOFA agreements in the future if we show we’re not going to play nice with the host nation.

It’s like the transgender policy shift. I actually think Trump was substantively right on the issue. He just executed it in his normal amateur hour, impulsive way by not even coordinating with the Pentagon and instead just announcing a massive shift via Twitter.

concur that leaders’ decisions shouldnt be a surprise.

not sure how this would affect SOFA.

Have never seen taxes to contribute to the common good as detrimental…just not an all about me kind of person.
do you think the Germans should pay their fair share or just us?

it isn’t about the individual but fairness for all involved
