Good idea or not???

The federal agency in charge of aviation security is considering major changes in how it screens airline passengers, including proposals that an official said would lift the ban on carrying razorblades and small knives as well as limit patdown searches.

The Transportation Security Administration will meet later this month to discuss the plan, which is designed to reduce checkpoint hassles for the nation’s 2 million passengers. It comes after TSA’s new head, Edmund S. “Kip” Hawley, called for a broad review in hopes of making airline screening more passenger-friendly.

CBS News Correspondent Dan Raviv reports that the TSA spends over $4 billion a year to make flying more secure, and officials say budget constraints mean they can’t check everything and everyone.

An initial set of staff recommendations drafted Aug. 5 also proposes that passengers no longer have to routinely remove their shoes during security checks. Instead, only passengers who set off metal detectors, are flagged by a computer screening system or look “reasonably suspicious” would be asked to do so, a TSA official said Saturday.

Raviv reports that the shoe concession to passengers may be a mistake, according to experts who recall what Richard Reid tried to do: set-off explosives in his sneakers on a plane.

“We need to be looking for bombs. That can be in shoes, in other things you wear on your body,” said CBS News Consultant Randy Larsen.

Larsen says that the existing security measures need to be modified.

"Much of our current efforts are to prevent a 9/11 style hijacking. That’s not going to happen. We have hardened cockpit doors, and passengers aren’t going to cooperate. Where the terrorists are going to go next are in bombs,” he said.

Any of the changes proposed by the staff, which also would allow scissors, ice picks and bows and arrows on flights, would require Hawley’s approval, this official said, requesting anonymity because there has been no final decision.

“The process is designed to stimulate creative thinking and challenge conventional beliefs,” said Mark Hatfield, TSA’s spokesman. “In the end, it will allow us to work smarter and better as we secure America’s transportation system.”

The Aug. 5 memo recommends reducing patdowns by giving screeners the discretion not to search those wearing tight-fitting clothes. It also suggests exempting several categories of passengers from screening, including federal judges, members of Congress, Cabinet members, state governors, high-ranking military officers and those with high-level security clearances.

But some travelers told Raviv that they oppose to this aspect of the plan.

“I think everyone needs to be checked regardless of what your status is,” one passenger said.

Well, considering that this type of thing seems to be typical, at least for Ft Lauderdale airport (the one I must use when I travel several times a year), since the stricter changes were implemented nearly a year ago, I for one am glad that someone higher up finally sees the need for a review of policy! I get sick to my stomach whenever I have to fly because I have heard so many stories of women being groped and fondled during “routine” searches. Certainly, at the VERY LEAST, some training is in order for the TSA screeners.

As for

well, we all know what fine upstanding, moral citizens they all are right?! They would never commit a crime, now would they.

What would be good is if they would stop strip searching 90 year old grandmas, and start stopping, searching, and questioning all the men who fit the PROFILE of a terrorist. I for one advocate profiling…unless you conduct these searches properly and security targets the right people, you are peeing in the wind (excuse the analogy).

Especially good ole Ted Kennedy 😉

I guess they will finally have to learn to prioritize??

Wonderful…no that 80 year old white grandma can keep her “tennies” on…that is unless she sets off the metal detector or is flagged by a computer or looks “suspicious” !

And the logic in this would be what???

Now, now… Teddy’s a fine upstanding man! We all know he didn’t kill Mary Jo Kopechne. What killed her was the fact that she never did master the skill of getting out of a sinking car while unconscious! 😦

If the pilot’s door is locked it really won’t matter if grandpa brings his old pocket knife. They need better baggage screenings and explosive sniffing technology.

Karin, I understand your points. It is beyond belief that that passengers should be allowed to carry knives, ice picks or bows and arrows aboard a plane. What on earth would someone need those things on a plane for? If you must bring them, put them in the baggage check! It is just stupefying that the TSA screeners have been told that they may NOT under any circumstances select someone who fits the profile of a terrorist for further investigation, yet they MUST show that they are being proactive so they randomly screen everyone else. That’s how an 80 year old white grandma, who is on her way to visit the grandkids for Christmas, gets sexually assaulted by TSA screeners, and it’s legal.

Every single time I fly, my carry on bag is x-rayed (usually twice) and manually searched. Why? Because I have a metal bookmark in whatever book I happen to be reading. It is in the shape of a quill pen, so maybe they do have something to fear from me, since as we know, the pen is mightier than the sword.

I just am continually amazed at the depths of stupidity that the TSA has been able to reach since it inception just a few short years ago. Maybe this review of policy will actually reverse or correct at least some of the inanity that is now in place.

Smells to me like King George and his crew are purposely giving a silent message to terrorists to carry out another catastrophy to get the straying sheeple who are seeing thru this imperialistic war back in line and on the Kings message by use of terror upon the American people once again.

Disagree? Then give me a better explanation why such a thing would be cleared, reduced and lowered?

I wont hold my breath waiting for a sensical response though.

lol,

I will try to give you sensical response. Basic security 101. The pre 911 breaches in cockpit access have been solved with things like triple locks titanium and cavalar reinforced doors. To not shift to our current threat would be stupid and a waste of money.

You’re just too funny…so now the cockpit doors are secure, we can allow knives and razor blades back on?

You really explained THAT one to me! 😃

Like I said…I aint waiting for a SENSICAL response.

:rotfl:

Does this mean I will stop having to take off my shoes every time I go through security.
