Bishops support book attacking the Pope - Telegraph Blogs
The Catholic Church in England and Wales has helped commission a withering attack on Pope Benedict XVI that also refers to the atrocities of 9/11 as “the ‘terrorist’ attacks” in inverted commas.

Catholic Social Justice, a volume of essays put together by an agency of the Bishops’ Conference, systematically rubbishes Benedict’s first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est (God is Love). The book has been given a glowing foreword by the Bishop of Plymouth, Christopher Budd.

Benedict is accused of taking an ideological position in favour of “the capitalist system and colonialism”.

Does this actually represent the view of the bishops of England and Wales? The committees, mostly composed of people who were not bishops at all, of the bureaucracy of the U.S. Catholic conference were long out of control. They would issue statements without the bishops’ okay that represented their own personal views, and since they were committees of the USCC, the press often treated these statements as those of the bishops, where they were not at all. (The bishops have in very recent years reined these committes in.) I wonder if this is the case in this instance in the United Kingdom too.

At least one Bishop appears to support the views represented in this book, considering he wrote the foreword.

One day these kind of shepherds will have to answer for their disobedience and scandal. I pray that they receive mercy, and that I would never act in such a way-should I ever come to be in the position.

Benedict is accused of taking an ideological position in favour of “the capitalist system and colonialism”. **We are told that the Pope’s views on social justice are “hardly credible” **in view of the Church’s historic record of violence, torture and theft. We learn that the Catholic clergy teach that “men are superior to women” because they are more in the image of Christ.

adoration should be on the list of those who want to oppose this, I think.

In that article it quoted a Priest a “Fr. Tissa Balasuriya”. Hasn’t he been in the news before for something else?

Regarding culpability with the Bishops, “Catholic Social Justice” which is under the authority of the English Bishops, any Bishop who does not criticize this, gives the clear impression of support.

The CBCEW is the centre of liberal Catholicism in Britain. They are so out of touch with real Catholicism it’s tragic…but they have way too much power!

The amount of Catholic bashing, bigotry, and prejudice among the English beggars belief: these fall from their lips like leaves in fall.

This book will only add to this sad historic reality.

These individuals are going to have to answer before God for the damage they’ve done to real social justice by estranging orthodox Catholics. If they really cared about justice, they would promote Catholic social teaching and work alongside traditional and neo-conservatist Catholics, not waste their time promulgating heresy, attacking the pope who brought down communism, and defending terrorism. I cannot believe how far these individuals are willing to go in destroying real social action to push their agendas. I feel so bad for real social justice Catholics.

Yes, he was the first theologican excommunicated since Vatican II.
Among the errors discovered in his writings, the Vatican pointed to Father Balasuriya’s arguments that baptism is not necessary; that the pope is not infallible; that mankind is not stained by original sin; that Mary was not a virgin nor was she assumed into heaven; and that Jesus may not be divine.

But he was formally reconciled to the Church a year later.

It’s very easy to misunderstand an author if all one has of him - or her - is a phrase or two: I for one would prefer to read the book before having an opinion about it. The article tells the reader far more about the reaction of its author, than about the contents of the book

If it’s as bad as the author says - then it can go into my small (but growing) collection of anti-Catholic publications from various sources 🙂

Those aren’t inverted commas, they’re single quotes. Doesn’t The Telegraph have editors?

Well, it is a blog. Presumably blogs are treated differently than material that might appear in The Telegraph’s print edition or perhaps even an online column.

I think its about time Rome allow the UK Bishops to have their reunion with Canterbury minus the Pope. Same could go for many in the rest of Europe and North America as well…

Sometimes it seems the lines are being drawn. We must remain with the Chair of Peter.
