That’s going to guide his actions on any deal with Europe, since the only way the UK can afford any of this is by keeping as frictionless a trade system as possible
That’s been my thinking as well.
Let’s also remember the most important thing to the Tories; their donors. There are a lot of them in the City, and while there are a few outliers, all those bankers and investors who serve as the Bank of the Conservative Party are absolutely terrified of the City being cut off at the knees, they’ll regain their influence over Cabinet now that the political war is over.

Long story short. Johnson comes out of this with very few political debts; something that a PM in Britain has not enjoyed for a very long time. He’s the Prime Minister that not only crushed Labour, but simultaneously stomped on Nigel Farage. In military terms, that’s a route on both the opposing force and on the enemy marching to the rearguard. If only Napoleon could have pulled that off at Waterloo.

As an interesting aside, Nicky Morgan is going to get a Life Peerage and remain Culture Secretary. I think this signals that Johnson wants some continuity, and is extending the olive branch. Morgan was treated pretty shabbily by May, but was also one of the thorn’s in the side of the Leavers. It’s one of the reasons that I think Johnson isn’t really aligned to any particular ethos on Brexit.

I think Vouthon is more than capable of speaking for himself without a need for me to do on his behalf.
That’s exactly what I thought too.

Playing the long-game, eventually the disgruntled young Remainers of today will become the majority of the population of England and it’s likely then to re-join the EU, once the older lot have passed away.
Come on, come on now! Can we please rejoin a little before we older lot hand in our dinner pails?

Come to Scotland! We’d love to have English Remainers, our arms are wide open (yes, yes - the weather is often “wide open” as well, but you can live with that surely?).

If you relocate early you can come here and bolster the independence vote for our re-entry to the EU as its new 28th member state.

Ah but some of us have joint citizenship from sunnier climes:
Vide 'o mare quant’è bello, spira tantu sentimento, Comme tu a chi tieni mente, Ca scetato 'o fai sunnà.
Which means that, while half of my heritage is “pazzo” (translation: “not entirely sensible” or words to that effect), it’s not that mad.

For the full meaning

I remember on my first visit there (Eire that is) continually thinking it must be nice here in summer - then remembering oh yeah, it’s July. This happened a bunch of times in my head.

Another memory from that trip: returning to Boston and unpacking my duffel bag, only to discover everything inside was drenched with ‘Irish dew’ meaning moisture (not whisky).

I can’t guarantee I’d be huddled - I have pretty good posture actually (or so I’ve been told).

@(name removed by moderator) not quite as bad as Venus in that Ray Bradbury story about the girl locked in the school closet, but close.

Actually, when we’ve holidayed there, we had rather decent weather.

The thing about Italy is that when it rains it really, really rains! ☔

I remember being caught in a downpour in Firenze (Florence) standing on a traffic island. I just pulled an umbrella out of my bag and watched people getting soaked - I said: “I’m English, it always rains in England,” smiles all around, which was nice.
