Yes, it creates a pickle there, all right. And I’ve always thought it hubris on the part of the British to retain the title Defender of the Faith (which was ironically given to Henry VIII) as an inherited title. Pope Leo X, who gave him that title, never intended it to be an inherited one. Charles has suggested “defender of faiths” as a politically correct alternative. He’s on to something there, except I would phrase it “defender of faith”–to denote one who defends the right of all to have faith or a faith. The other plural title would put him in the position of being an apologist for every faith, which I not at all what I believe he means by it.Well that could leave to interesting times between the Anglican Communion and Catholic Church. I know the role is really a titular thing, but it still seems quite amusing to me.Defender of the Faith, indeed.
Well, you’d have to marry the first-born (legitimate) daughter of William (it’s expected that the sons taking precedence over daughters in order of succession will end, so the pressure would be off in arranging an accident for any younger brother - which is a good thing - any elder brothers would have to be taken care of though) who had converted or was prepared to convert to catholicism. So I SHOULD keep my day job?
Do any of the Scottish clans or Irish still maintain any rights to the throne? If their claims can be considered legitimate it would be interesting to see how this change in British law would affect them.As a person who comes from an ancestral line of a Scottish clan which suffered greatly for the Jacobite cause (the Stuart dynasty retaining their rightful claim to the throne), I can say that this is monumental for a great number of people in the UK, particularly Scotland and even in Ireland.
The current rightful heir, according to the Jacobites, is Franz, Duke of Bavaria, House of Wittelsbach, and heir-general to the Stuart Dynasty. So, when you go through the long and complex line of succession, he is considered the most direct heir to the Stuarts. If this ban is lifted, we would consider him the King of England, Scotland, and Wales. Depending on your historical stance, this may also apply to Ireland and even France.Do any of the Scottish clans or Irish still maintain any rights to the throne? Thank you for the information. I suppose the Duke can’t see how he would ever realistically ascend to the throne considering the sentiments of the English people. Although, I have heard that Scotland has been seeking a way to disengage itself from England to be an independent country. Even so, would the Scots want a king? Is there enough support for that scenario and what about the Protestants there? Would they want a king of any kind? It’s complicated even from where I stand–I can’t imagine what a tangle it would be for you folks. :hypno:The current rightful heir, according to the Jacobites, is Franz, Duke of Bavaria, House of Wittelsbach, and heir-general to the Stuart Dynasty. It should be noted that his claim, even though he cares nothing for it, is entirely legitimate and is easily proven in the line of succession. If enough Jacobites rally, and if one of Franz’s successors accept their rightful claim, there may indeed be a new royal dispute in the future.
And what do you suggest the British do? Set up our system in which a deluded public elects whoever tickles their ears most? No system of government is perfect and no leader is perfect, either. Besides, you leave out hope–and hope is why we “keep on keep’ng on” in spite of poor leaders and blatantly bad laws. It may only be “a fool’s hope” but it’s better than just throwing stones at people who can’t throw them back at you. Save your ammunition for elected leaders.Who wants to marry into that sorry lot anyway? Chucky is a sorry specimen and with him as a role model what kind of husbands will his sons make?
Of course they’re one of the richest families on Earth, I suppose that papers over a lot of faults.
