UK PM Boris Johnson taken to intensive care

I read that a few weeks ago he was visiting hospitals and bragging about shaking ALL the patients’ hands. What on earth was he thinking?

Everyone should be rooting for Boris, or any world leader or politician. Heck, any human.

Trump apparently enlisted some unorthodox help if Boris’s doctors want their help.

“I’ve asked two of the leading companies – these are brilliant companies – Ebola, AIDS, others, they’ve come with the solutions and just have done incredible jobs – and I’ve asked them to contact London immediately,” Trump said.

He added: “They have offices in London, major companies – more than major, more than size, they’re genius. And I had a talk with four of them today and they speak a language that most people don’t even understand. But I understand something: that they’ve really advanced therapeutics, and therapeutically, and they have arrived in London already. Their London office has whatever they need and we’ll see if we can be of help. We’ve contacted all of Boris’ doctors.”

“It’s a very complex treatment of things that they’ve just recently developed,” Trump said later, in response to a question from a reporter. "They’ve already had meetings with the doctors, and we’ll see whether or not they want to go that route. … They’re at the hospital, and they have everything with them should it be needed.

The sad part is that a lot of people who don’t like his politics are probaby hoping for a bad outcome.
Thankfully, that does not seem to be the case. I spoke to my fiancé this evening (he is British), and he said that everyone he has spoken to since the news broke has been pretty upset about the prime minister’s condition and that there is a perceptible sense of concern.

I do think that British politics is somewhat kinder than our own. For example, Boris Johnson paid what seemed to be a genuinely heartfelt tribute to Jeremy Corbyn at his last appearance as leader of the opposition. I appreciate that you are talking about ordinary citizens, but I think that there is a trickle-down effect. I think the one big exception was the way that many people gleefully celebrated the death of Margaret Thatcher.

I can’t see how anybody who has seen film of what’s going on in our (or the Italian, Spanish and so on) Intensive Care Units could ever wish that on anybody.

It’s good that people are being civil. I was thinking more about the usual ordinary folks who comment on social media.
I guarantee that if our US President were afflicted there would be people on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram openly hoping for the worst.
I agree. It’s sad. We should never wish anyone illness/death.

And what people have to remember is that if anything happens to Pres. Trump, the Presidency would go (at least for the next few months) to Vice President Pence–whom I admire greatly, but I know many of Pres. Trump’s enemies definitely do NOT admire! 😁

This is sad news. Regarding President Trump, I’m far from an admirer and have felt the need to confess holding anger towards him in the confessional before, and have even wondered if he could be the antichrist, the return of Nero, although I don’t believe he is any more, but I would never wish harm on him or anyone else.

I have no doubt there are others though, who would be happy if he got sick, I’m sorry for them.

Back onto the subject of the thread, there has just been a briefing stating that Johnson is stable, still in good spirits and hasn’t required anything other than some oxygen. This is good news, I hope he improves soon.

Edit - from the Guardian liveblog:

Boris Johnson ‘stable’ in hospital and does not have pneumonia, Downing Street confirms

The Downing Street lobby briefing has just finished. It took place by conference call, as is normal now.

Here are the top lines.
  • Boris Johnson does not have pneumonia, Downing Street has said. Until now ministers and No 10 have refused to give a clear answer to this question. But asked if the PM has been diagnosed with pneumonia, the spokesman said: “That is not the case, no.”
  • The spokesman said that Johnson was “stable” overnight and “remains in good spirits”. In a statement about his condition in intensive care, the prime minister’s spokesman said:
The prime minister has been stable overnight and remains in good spirits. He is receiving standard oxygen treatment and breathing without any other assistance. He has not required mechanical ventilation or non-invasive respiratory support.

@Lou2U What’s scary about this is that oftentimes a patient with the virus seems to be improving and then it gets worse. That’s what happened to Adam Schlesinger of the band ‘Fountains of Wayne.’ He was 52.

Yes, it’s awful about Adam Schlesinger. It’s very cruel, to think you’re recovering and then you suddenly get worse. Apparently this often happens around Day 10 of having symptoms, which seems to fit in with Johnson getting worse yesterday. It’s good news he’s stable and hasn’t felt any worse since.

And then at the end your loved ones can’t even be present with you; they have to say goodbye over FaceTime. Same with the funeral.

That’s what true leadership looks like - wish we had someone like that here.

I think prayers are in order for the renewed health and speedy recovery of PM Boris Johnson.

I don’t know. Maybe so that he might cut down on his political career?

Seriously though, Andrew Cuomo has never appeared better to New Yorkers than now. It is his finest hour.

I am glad for him; just because I wouldn’t vote for someone doesn’t mean I don’t want them to do the best they can in a crisis by their constituents. I wonder how other governors are faring, in terms of popularity. I know Trump’s ratings in March saw a surge, but I’d be curious if people were pleased with their governors or feel as Tomarin does that the executives have not done enough.

I think Cuomo is behaving like a responsible executive unlike the man in the White House.

I think you have that clear; I think Trump has behaved like a responsible executive, as has my governor Hogan (more or less). I think Cuomo has been fine at times, and full of blame at others (and flat out lied and gotten caught at least once), but that is as an outside observer. I am sure in the aftermath of all this, we will know who did what they should have to prepare and who didn’t, but federally and locally.

We certainly aren’t exploding (yet). He gets credit for that as the State’s chief executive. And the MD website for business loans is about as easy to use and quick as one could be; way better than the federal website. Less traffic sure, but I as impressed. A far cry form the ACA state website Lt.Governor Anthony Brown rolled out in 2010.
