June 10, 2005—Quick, which one is the robot?

Repliee Q1 (at left in both pictures) appeared yesterday at the 2005 World Expo in Japan, where she gestured, blinked, spoke, and even appeared to breathe. Shown with co-creator Hiroshi Ishiguru of Osaka University, the android is partially covered in skinlike silicone. Q1 is powered by a nearby air compressor, and has 31 points of articulation in its upper body.

Internal sensors allow the android to react “naturally.” It can block an attempted slap, for example. But it’s the little, “unconscious” movements that give the robot its eerie verisimilitude: the slight flutter of the eyelids, the subtle rising and falling of the chest, the constant, nearly imperceptible shifting so familiar to humans.

Surrounded by machines that draw portraits, swat fast-moving balls, and snake through debris, Q1 is only one of the showstoppers at the expo’s Prototype Robot Exposition, which aims to showcase Japan’s growing role in the robotics industry. But given Q1’s reported glitch-related “spasms” at the expo, it may be a while before androids are escorting tour groups or looking after children—which may be just as well. “When a robot looks too much like the real thing, it’s creepy,” Hiroshi told the Associated Press. —Ted Chamberlain

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm…AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :bigyikes: please don’t hurt me robot please! frightening… does this me there could be two of me!? double trouble… hmmmm

I can’t believe that we are the only ones who find this creepy:eek: Gilliam what say you?

I can just see the time coming when arguments will be made about whether or not an artifically-created human (robot) has a soul.

Why should this be any more creepy than any other machine designed with close resemblance to human form, such as telephone answering systems or text-to-speech readers with realistic computer generated voices?

You have to be kidding:eek:

Already, movies and anime have brought this up…

With all the various groups in power that are obsessed with population control I envision this advertisement.:nope:

Are you worried about STD’s,Divorce, unwanted pregnancy’s?Well worry no more:ehh: Our Q1 robot can give you "companionship"without the risks and headaches:nope: The heartbreak of cheating and worry over your finances no longer apply:ehh: You can have your “partner” programmed depending on your sexual orientation:eek: We will create him or her to your expectations:nope:

Sarah: Why is that man trying to kill me?

Reese: It’s not a man, it’s a machine.

Sarah: What?

Reese: It’s a machine. The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human - sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot. I had to wait till he moved on you before I could zero him.

Sarah: Look, I’m not stupid, you know. They cannot make things like that yet.

Reese: No…not yet. Not for about forty years.
…

Reese: Listen, and understand: that terminator is out there. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

   I can’t honestly say that the terminator did not come to mind:eek:

I would tell my robot double, it’s time to get ready for work and no speeding! (in hopes that the program would not include my lead foot).😃

Since I would be sending my double to work for me, I would probably be tempted to waste my time playing computer and video games, unless I would get another job and have a 2 income household with my robot double as sort of a pseudo roommate.😃

No, I’m not.

This robot is is an object made to resemble human form as perceived by one sense, vision. There are other objects such as some sculptures and manequins which are made to an even closer visual resemblance of the human form, but usually without any motive component. Some CGI objects also realistically resemble human form, including motion, but are spatially limited by display constraints.

It is also possible to make an object that artificially resembles the human form, or aspects of the human form, as perceived by other senses, sound being the most obvious one that comes to mind. There are now computer generated voices so realistic that it is often difficult to tell if one is listening to a person or a machine when one can not see the speaker, such as on the phone. Why should this robot necessarily be any more creepy than any of these other things?

That robot is cool!

I wonder if she is anatomically “correct” 😃

**What’s the big deal? I saw Walt Disney’s “Abraham Lincoln” robot at Disneyland years ago. **

How old are the Walt Disney robots? I think his had more moving parts. Does this mean the Japanese have used spies to steal robot secrets from Disneyland?

Does anybody know what is with the extremely creepy looking hands??? At first I thought “she” had gloves on…But it looks like they made her that way, with the weird hands…

Anyhow, this is a whole other thing from other technology. This is an “artificial human”. Lisa is right. This is too much. There are all kinds of moral problems with this…
What about, “Why waste time having children? BUY a child, made to order!” Sure. The “baby” could even drive you home from work.
How about the job market? Who is going to hire humans that get the flu, or migraines, & have to be paid a salary–just buy your work force, & let the  “sub humans” starve…
