UN demands answers after journalist dies in Mexican police custody

MEXICO CITY - Following the death of a journalist in unexplained circumstances in Mexican police custody, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Mexico issued a statement on Sunday calling for a full and impartial investigation of the case.

Juan Nelcio Espinoza, a reporter for the local channel Valedor TV, was arrested on Friday night, along with a colleague, on charges of alleged violence against security forces, after reporting a shooting in the town of Piedras Negras on the U.S. border.

The Coahuila state attorney general’s office said on Friday that Espinoza had experienced breathing problems and was taken to a hospital where he died shortly afterward.
Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists, usually though, it’s not from dying in police custody. A case to watch.
