Once again it is Lent and once again, people have taken it as a chance to generalize popular media. As much as I appreciate the whole notion of abstinence, I’m tired of letting so many careless remarks about television shows slide.

This is similar to another a thread I made about getting sick of people bashing television. The difference now though is I want to focus on breaking up the big evil box that television shows seem to be. I think it’s time people should realize that TV watching need not be a mindless, surfing producer of couch potatoes.

What happened to the idea that people are quite preferential with what they watch according to who they are? Don’t people acquire a certain taste for certain television shows? For me, I am fascinated by documentaries, movies, and animated works. The only time I’ve had to tune into news and politics is when I needed a laugh (or an idea for work :o). What about everyone else? Have you ever tried to differentiate your preferences from that of others?

You should. It will show that television media is not that much different from your local library in terms of content.

With that said, here are the rules:
  1. List down the kind of television shows you are always fond of watching.
  2. For the purpose of making it challenging, go first with shows starting from the 90s and are not religious. (Last thread had too many people just sticking to EWTN so I want more outside of that preference.)
Come on folks, there’s got to be something you enjoy watching on TV. (No sardonic remarks please.)

Good question.

I love British TV shows. I used to watch a lot of British comedy (Keeping up Appearances, Fawlty Towers, Are You Being Served, etc) but lately I’ve gotten out of the habit. I have watched all 3 seasons of Downton Abbey and can’t wait for season 4 (next Jan in the US). Call the Midwife and the new Selfridges show are coming in March so I’ll watch that.

I also enjoy college basketball and football, and professional baseball.

I watch CNN as well, and the local news.

Tomorrow night I am going to watch the Oscars.

I really like: The Mentalist, Flashpoint, NCIS and (religious alert) Touched By An Angel.

I enjoyed Pokemon, Power Rangers, DBZ, Pretender, 7-days, Early Edition and America’s Funniest Home Videos in the 90’s. 🤷 Nowadays the only show I watch regularly is Downtown Abbey, but if i have free time to kill I’ll find something on Netflix or Amazon Prime. An honorable mention goes to Firefly which I would still be watching if Fox hadn’t killed it before it’s time.

In the 90’s I was watching typical college stuff: Melrose Place and 90210 and Friends.
Then I went through a period of time when I liked mindless drama: Lifetime movies and Young & the Restless.
The only show I watch regularly right now is The Walking Dead :o. I like medical shows like The Monster Within Me, Untold Stories of the ER, and Mystery Diagnosis. I also like shows on NatGeo and Science Channel (older stuff like Planet Earth and Life After People), and stuff that has to do with outer space. Oh, I also like some reality tv…I used to like the Apprentice, now I like Face Off and all the ones on the Food Network.

That is a lot of shows, but I actually rarely even turn on the tv. I homeschool and have 4 children (and one on the way) so all I ever really watch is whatever they have it on after school! LOL. Recently I have discovered that I really like Tinkerbell movies:D

Freaks and Geeks, The Walking Dead, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Daria, Green Acres, The Simpsons, I Love Lucy, The Dick Van **** Show, The Brady Bunch, The Monkees.

My favorite show from the 90’s was X Files.

As for current stuff, Blue Bloods, Elementary, CSI, Once Upon a Time, Criminal Minds, Law and Order, and Walking Dead.

Live sports come ahead of any TV series though-baseball, football, basketball, hockey and soccer are my “reality shows”

I do enjoy Ah! My Goddess, Gundam AGE, Inuyasha, Man vs. Food Nation and probably My Girlfriend is a Gumiho.

I don’t think I’m going to help your cause much. That whooshing noise is certain people hissing “I knew it!”😃

90201
Melrose Place
Seinfeld
ER
Friends (but I missed good chunks of a couple of seasons because that was the night that the YAs met.)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I got into MST3K and Daria kinda late but I loved them. (My people!)

CSI (original)
Law & Order (all franchises until the word subpeona gave me anxiety attacks. Not kidding.)

I watched also stuff on HGTV, Food Network, Discovery, Discovery Health (my mom loved that one), and History channels. By the time I got cable MTV didn’t play videos anymore and VH1 was hit or miss. Thank goodness for Youtube so I can actually watch music videos that I want to see.

I don’t watch TV now; I don’t have cable or an antenna (on my house). I don’t even watch it at the gym unless there is something really special on.

If your worried about that just ask your girlfriend to say moshi moshi. if she can’t or if she refuses, then kick her to the curb as she’s probably a nine-tailed fox demon.

I really like to watch basketball. I don’t watch a lot of shows these days, but I like some older sitcoms, like Sanford and Son.

lol 😃
Personally, Belldandy from Ah! My Goddess is funnier than Mi Ho from My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. 🙂

I watch Nickelodeon once in awhile - specifically older Spongebob episodes, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Legend of Katara, and Jimmy Neutron.

In the line of educational entertainment: Mythbusters, some Science Channel programs, and some* Documentary Channel* programs.

In the line of news media: Mainly an annoyed combination of flipping between The Blaze, FOX News, and HLN, though The Blaze has a few programs I do actually like.

I also like to watch movies when they’re playing. Just tonight I saw but the last half of Life is Beautiful, and it’s a top 10 favourite of mine now.

I like mystery and law shows and police procedurals.

And I think Downton Abbey is probably my favorite show of all times, a classic work of art. Not absolutely perfect, but close to it. It is one show that I put my driving glasses on for and put down whatever I am doing with my hands (crocheting, little video game).

But i do think tv has been the ruination of society, and would not have one if it were up to me. But I would then be torn about Downton Abbey… sigh. Life is rough!

Pff, this thread is actually turning out as well as I expected. I suggest any lurker with a beef with television should really take a nice, long read at the responses.

There’s a cable TV at work and it really amuses me to see the kind of different things different people watch on it. It makes it hard to believe so many sweeping statements people make on here (especially during Lent).

Here’s a rough illustration:

Gays and Gals - America’s Next Top Model, Jane by Design, Project Runway
Bros - Inside the NBA, CNN Sports, America’s Most Shocking
Nerds - Highly formal science documentaries. (Sheldon Cooper would be proud.)
Pet Lovers - Dog Whisperer, My Cat From Hell, Pets 101
Foodies - Man VS Food (That show is torture! stomach growls DX), Cake Boss
Geeks - Bug Wars, Mythbusters, River Monsters
Me - Animax segments on AXN, classic flicks on Disney Channel, and any other good movie on HBO, Star Movies etc.

Once upon a Time
Dexter
Downton Abbey
Bones
Walking Dead
Big Bang Theory
Criminal Minds

I also love documentaries and shows on ancient civilizations, mummies, etc
