**Master and Commander **with Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany. This is based on the Aubrey Maturin series of books by Patrick O’Brian and it’s marvelous. There’s a scene where Maturin, who is a doctor has to operate on himself (he uses a mirror to see) since he’s the only one who can do it. Now that is Macho. And the scene where Russell Crowe gives a speech to his men just before they engage the French ship Archeon, well I was ready to swing a cutlass myself.

I’d rather watch this 10 times over than watch a romantic comedy once. Unless it’s a movie based on Jane Austen’s books. I love those except for Mansfield Park.

I have all 21 of the novels. Awesome series!
 
Some might argue with me, but I nominate “Schindler’s List”. On the one hand, you have “testosterone gone bad” with Goeth (sp?) and the SS. On the other, you have the supermale Oscar Schindler, weak when it comes to women, strong when it comes to protecting the weak. His approach to the rabbi in the factory toward the end is classic. “Isn’t it the Sabbath? Well, what are you waiting for?” Quiet kindness, without being maudlin about it, and respecting the manhood of the rabbi. He does the same thing with Stern when Stern makes a nearly fatal error and is nearly shipped to Auschwitz. He doesn’t shame Stern by claiming to have saved him. Rather, he offhandedly upbraids Stern for nearly depriving him of his bookkeeper. “How can I run a company without a bookkeeper?” In doing so, he preserves Stern’s dignity by seeming to overlook it.

And his exhortation to the SS guards at the end. “You can go home to your families as men, or…” Speaks volumes on real manhood.

And Stern! Without a single aid to power, he even manipulates Schindler! Stern is the protector of women, children and the weakest, without having the slightest worldly power to do it. His exchange with Schindler over the one-armed “skilled worker” is a masterpiece!! “Highly skilled! Success!!”. Schindler knows he is being conned, and in a dangerous way, and Stern knows he knows. But Stern also knows that in his superficial appeal to superficial male values, (Success) he has actually appealed to (and encouraged) the heroism that is the deepest part of Schindler’s manhood.

Nothing could surpass the scene in which Stern finally accepts the drink from Schindler; acknowledging Schindler’s humanity, notwithstanding his being an “Aryan”, and bravely accepting his own, apparently imminent torture and death with a joke. When Schindler tells Stern they’ll all have a drink over it someday when the Nazi reign of terror is over, Stern replies: “I think I’d better have it now.” Perfect!

And for another that doesn’t seem so obvious…Bing Crosby in “Bells of St. Mary’s”. Now there’s a priest who is male all the way! And of course, the priest in “On the Waterfront”. (Name escapes me, though.)

I agree! I’m also a woman, but I hate “chick flicks”. I prefer action movies. Another good one with Russell Crowe is 3:10 to Yuma.

Lot of good ones so far.

What about all the Lord of the Rings movies? I didn’t see anything remotely PC in them, and the heroes were really heroes, including the heroic women…which ought to be just fine with any of us guys. After all, Mary is one of our heroes, too.

Plus…Transformers!!! I watched it for the first time on DVD a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved it…except for the smart-aleck “what would Jesus do” line early on, but that wasn’t really offensive, just dumb. And, of course, it worked for the kid.
 
This thread’s very title proves this culture is in desperate need of more testosterone.
