I never saw this one. It looked too much like a chick flick in the trailers: dancing, “a woman’s love”, British, no car chases.

Just checking in as another ‘honorary’ guy. 😉 Excalibur is the first R rated movie I ever saw. Dad and I watched it together quite often. When a Bond movie is on, I have to watch it. It’s a compulsion that I can’t shake.

Oh but loads of courageous full-on desert fighting in order to restore lost honour, British stiff upper lips, armed uprisings, noble Sudanese “savages” (not terribly PC) … it’s similar in a lot of ways to Lawrence of Arabia. Not a chick flick by any means.

For some reason I’m also reminded of the marvellous Michael Caine movie ‘Zulu’. The bits where the British soldiers sing ‘Men of Harlech’ to buck themselves up, and where the Zulus after the battle acknowledge their bravery, make me tear up every time.

But doesn’t it also have romance? It is also still British.

Well, I don’t mean to glorify mafia violence, but I do watch any of The Godfather movies whenever they are on TV when I’m home. And although The Godfather: Part III has some unflattering characterizations of clergy, there is an underlying theme of the quest for redemption and making amends for the past.

Very little - at the very beginning and end of the movie, plenty of fighting and derring-do for a good hour and a half in the middle of it for you 🙂

And I resent the implication that British movies can’t have plenty of testosterone, some of 'em (like Lawrence of Arabia and Zulu as I’ve mentioned before) are great, as are some of the WWII movies like Bridge on the River Kwai.

Not to mention the old swashbuckler piratey movies (aaah, Errol Flynn … )
 
my husband and sons will sit through numerous viewings of all things Jason Bourne.
