Hi all—
I am heart broken. My DH and I went in today to speak with my priest about having our marriage convalidated. I was only 17 when I got married and recieved some misinformation from my then priest. This was 15 years ago…to make a long story short I was led to this forum and found out that I should not have been recieving the Precious Body and Blood. Since I found out my DH and I have refrained from marital relations hoping that I would be able to still recieve communion until the convalidation ceremony. Well my priest just rained on my parade…he told my that I really shouldn’t but that if I came up for communion he wouldn’t deny me. I guess denying myself for the next month or so will be a humbling experience.

I didn’t realize how much I take for granted being able to recieve such a miracle. I feel like I lost a child–or maybe I feel like a lost child…either way I don’t like it.

Pray that I may get through this in one piece.

God Bless you for getting your marriage blessed. I would suggest offering up not being able to receive the Eucharist and the Precious Blood in reparation for all those who receive Him un-worthily. Also just imagine how much joy and how much more you will appreciate Him when you can receive Him again. Have a blessed day. Will be praying for you.

You are right but I selfishly wish things were different!

To know what’s right and wrong and follow your conscience in determining whether you’re worthy or not of receiving the Sacrament is probably the highest respect you can pay to the Sacrament. You did good, I think. I for one never look down to those who choose not to receive.

I am not sure I understand the priest saying that you should not receive. I was told (when I was in a somewhat similar situation) that if my husband and I lived as brother and sister that all I had to do was go to confession and then I would be able to receive! The fact that the priest says “you really shouldn’t but I wont deny you” says to me it is more his ~opinion~ that you should not receive rather than official church teaching/doctrine. I could be wrong…

Either way, a month or so of not receiving would be a test and it would also make the day you can receive even that much sweeter!

I thought that I would be able to receive as well. I think I probably could…as he said ‘he wouldn’t deny me’, but I would be concerned that he may make the process a little more time consuming and delayed. As is he is going to try to help me get it moving as quickly as possible since he has been given orders to move. He is only here until July 1st. So we all want it completed by then. I also really thought that since we have already proven the test of time (15 years of marriage-almost) I would not have to go through the whole premarriage inventory and questionaires and stuff. Oh Well. It can only help build my marriage stronger.

Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers.

I understand what you are going through. For almost 3 months I was unable to take Communion. I am a recent convert married to a Protestant for 33 years. I didn’t realize that I wasn’t supposed to receive, but when I found out, my husband agreed to live as brother and sister till it was resolved to avoid any scandal. (Fortunately no one even knew of my situation and I kept it quiet.) It took awhile to get his Baptism Certificate, but as soon as it arrived we sent in the paperwork and received a Sanation of Marriage within 24 hours! Oh the joy to kneel again at the rail and receive the Body of our precious Lord!!!
The situation was very humbling and I still received many graces while I obediently waited…

Keep your eyes open! Sometimes the Lord tests us on our humility and obedience. Remember this priest is representing Christ and your act of obedience and humility could be earning you special graces. Be careful not to put “self” in the way, that long awaited communion could be full of blessings for you, in return for your obedience and humility. Have you read the Diary of Saint Faustina? The Lord spoke to her about priests, us, obedience, humility and all the graces we receive in return.
When the child Jesus got lost, his parents found Him in the temple. Mary questioned Him on this action and He answered “Don’t you know that should be in my Fathers’ house.” But actually, it was not His time yet to spread the gospel, He was actually putting His young life in danger. Mary knew this, for she was the wife of the Holy Spirit…so she took Him out of there and Jesus “HAD TO WAIT” until the right time of the Lord. That is why the child went home with Mary and Joseph and was “obedient”. He was God himself, and was obedient. Obedience is a beautiful tool of order, it holds us, prepares us forthe time of our Lord, not our time. There must be something very special the Lord wants to give you spiritually, stay in the order of obedience, so that you can receive it. Obedience and humility are holy sisters, their job is to make saints for the Lord. All saints love obedience and humility, you are being invited tothis special dinner, don’t miss it.

Your priest is wrong. You should call the chancery office so that you can get the official word on this. This issue has already been answered in the Ask an Apologist forum.

If you are in an invalid marriage you may receive Holy Communion provided you go to confession for the act of the invalid marriage and promise to live as brother and sister in your marriage. However if this is not possible for you to do, live with your DH with no sex whatsoever until the marriage is convalidated then there would be a problem with you going to confession…

Maybe the priest feels that you will not be able to do it but then again he should give you a chance here. He is wrong saying he cannot deny you Holy communion- he most certainly can- especially if you keep going to confession every week for having sex with your DH- he can even deny you absolution.

The bottom line here is if you confess, then agree to live as brother and sister with your DH- and continue in it- then you may receive Holy Communion. I suggest again that you call your chancery office.

Ken,
I read about this in the Ask and Aplologist forum…that is why I was really suprised that he said I shouldn’t. He didn’t say that he **couldn’t ****** deny me just that he wouldn’t. I will refrain until I can get an official word on this. My hubby and I will continure to refrain from intimate relations until our marriage is convalidated because it just feels right…regardless of whether I can recieve the Blessed Sacrament or not.

Thanks for your response 🙂
