Hey man… don’t be sad… I was just questioning the way you spoke about your friends… You did call them friends yet you believe they do nothing for God. That cannot be… even the unbelievers in some ways serve God… when they love, when they do good, when they create art, when they procreate… 🙂 And you cannot read hearts.

Oh yes. Mother Teresa is AWESOME. I just saw a program the other day. She was talking and talking and it was like… oil of joy coming out of her mouth… o she served with a selfless love and oversupenatural strength that only a true Christian can have… Among other things she said: The devil tempts us, not so much to do us harm as to destroy God in us, because he hates God. I hope our unbeliever friend on this thread will ponder this…

Peace
You are so right. I thought about this before as well and it only makes sense. 👍

:sad_yes:

ahhh the good old devil is rearing his ugly head again huh? This goes to one of my objections to religion, it’s fear based. Oooo the devil must be perverting my thoughts since I’m an unbeliever.

Well, no. There is no devil, no invisible enemy (and no invisible friend). I don’t believe in religion because it’s unbelievable. Simple!

Hey man… come into the reality… we are post-darwin already.

By the way… Why don’t you just ask your invisible friend if he is real. Say the sceptic’s prayer, but… maybe you don’t dare.
Say: “God, if you are really there then prove yourself to me”. I have told people to do this before. some were proud and did not do it, but I have never heard about someone who asked and who did not get an answer… the ones who asked are now believers.

Ps. I know quite a few people that have SEEN Christ. Yes, seen Him. If you pray and become a truly humble man some day He might show Himself to you too.
However, that He is most of the time hidden to most of us only makes those who believe and live for him faithfully, bigger heroes. The best things in life are unseen… like Love, music, spontaneous poetry, the cool night breeze, our dreams…
buddy I grew up Catholic my whole life & thought very profoundly that I did believe. Heck, I was an alter boy (no the priest never touched me anywhere funny), I was even considering becoming a knight of columbus at one point (thankfully I decided against it, would probably be hard to explain my current views to the brothers at the lodge).

I used to be a super Catholic (well, even though I did have a soft spot for the theology of Calvin) … now I’m a super atheist, go figure:D

If I was in good old Calvin’s Geneva he would probably have me flogged or expelled (he was alive during the Catholic inquisition period as well … so I guess I would have been double screwed). Thankfully though I’m an American!

I agree with half her quote. Ponder this one also biblically correct:

The devil tempts us, not so much to do us harm as to destroy God in us, because he hates us.

Shocking news to everyone!!! Jesus Christ, the Son of The Living God has PROOVED His divinity! Oh Yes its ture. Death has been conquered, heresies have been cought in their lies, and life LIVES on. Jesus Christ, the warrior of LOVE, the innocent one who knew no sin became sin for OUR sake and has been sentenced to death!!!
Benjamin8o8, AWESOME opening post! I’m sorry I missed it on Sunday, because I’m sitting here with the biggest smile on my face! That was so great, I’m going to go read it again. 👍

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,”
~1 Peter 1:3-4

May God Bless you.

Never been able to ask this before from an atheist - but if you don’t mind. Are you happy? 🙂

I personally don`t believe athiests can ever be happy. That can only achieve temporal satisfaction. When a brand new clothing line comes out, they will buy it and express their “earthly” joy, but this only last for couple of months until the style gets played out. When they eat, it only takes a few hours to become hungry again, and you immidieatly gain a desire to eat again. When they have sex its a blast for the first time, but later it becomes a lustful addiction (nothing special), its like saint Augustine said when he compared life to a river.

But hey, once someone repents and accepts God in their heart, its a joy they carry out forever! Even Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy cant offer you that!

But he said he been there, did that, but now a super atheist and asked us to figure. So the question remains, is he happy? Is he at peace?

I won’t of course presume to speak for humble_in_doubt but I consider myself to be mostly happy.

Well I guess it’s nice to have an opinion.
That can only achieve temporal satisfaction.
Sure. Life is fleeting.

I’m really not much for changing clothing styles. I have pretty much worn that same sorts of things for the past few decades. My kids sometimes buy me stuff but I tend to revert back quickly.

Guilty as charged. So Catholics don’t get hungry? I wonder why there are so many fat priests and nuns on EWTN.

I suspect that once you actually experience sex (with another person) then you might change your mind on this.

Repent? What did I do wrong now?

I used to call God bad names… later I lived as if God didn’t exist and if He did, far away, then I was surely wiser than Him. I thought Jesus was a great guy but since I already saw things a little from above, I didn’t believe I needed guidance from the Bible. It said what I wanted it to say and I knew all that was important to know.

Later I met the living Christ… oh and by the way. I dont care if you have been an alter boy for 5000 years… that doesn’t mean you have been a super catholic… meaning a person who believes, loves, lives and walks with the living God.
Every week I see people going in and out of Church unchanged, they sit there sleeping while they do their “weekly obligation”. Many know the letter a little bit but have no clue about the Spirit. This is due to two things mainly: the failure in priests to actually preach the Gospel convincingly, challenging the young people to personal reflection and failing to believe and to do the miracles that followed the Christ as He walked on the earth. The second thing is that many have not yet received the grace to see.

I have experienced God. He is more real even than you and me.

I wonder why you are here, but I wont stick around to listen to your brain making funny sounds.
If you wonder why I can hint to you that I have heard it all before… so… Go figure

I wont deny that, but can I ask you, do you really believe that youre happy because God didn`t provide you with things such as: food, water, entertainment, desire to learn, family, even kids. When you held your child for the first time she/he was brought to this world, do you really believe she/he is just an evolved primate that coincidently exist. When you looked at her/his eyes, mouth, nose and ears when she/he were sleeping, did you not consider the propability that a Designer gave him/her to you because the Designer wants you to be happy?

I remember the first time I saw my lil brother in the hospital I really couldn`t understand how some athiest could manage to not believe in a higher power. How can life evolve from nothing?
Sure. Life is fleeting.
Saint. Bernard spent 3 years in a cave (free willingly) put an athiest in a cave and I will be amazed to find out if he/she didn`t commit suicide within 3 months. Without earthly pleasures athiests are nothing. This is why most people that live under servere circumstances still hold unto the belief of God because it gives them meaning in life. Its the Spirt of the Most High that drives these people further.

What about when you were a teenager?

who knows, I am a virgin. Im going to wait till I get married, but from what I heard from personal friends and others is that...well I dont know they just don`t sound so enthusiastic when they talk about which always surprises me.
Repent? What did I do wrong now?
We are all sinners. Humility is what draws somebody closer to God.

Not sure I understand the question here. As an atheist I don’t believe gods exist and thus I really don’t think any of them gave me anything at all.

It never even occurred to me that a designer of some sort might be responsible. I’m thinking you might want to learn a bit more about biology and evolution. At the very least you should know your enemy. In any event, life didn’t evolve from nothing so I can understand your confusion.
Saint. Bernard spent 3 years in a cave (free willingly) put an athiest in a cave and I will be amazed to find out if he/she didn`t commit suicide within 3 months.
Google for “Argument from personal incredulity”. I think you find that the notion that because you don’t understand something therefore god did it is not one of the more respected modes of debate. Maybe consider doing some cave tests and publish your findings.
Without earthly pleasures athiests are nothing.
Or to put it another way, “Without God, life is everything”.
This is why most people that live under servere circumstances still hold unto the belief of God because it gives them meaning in life. Its the Spirt of the Most High that drives these people further.
I really see no reason to have to be miserable in order for my life to have meaning.
What about when you were a teenager?
Nope. Keeping up with the current style never had much meaning for me.
we all have weaknesses…
So believing in God does not eliminate being hungry. So sad.
We are all sinners. Humility is what draws somebody closer to God.
So thinking that you have some sort of personal relationship with the creator of the entire cosmos is an example of being humble? Yikes. It would be truly scary to see a proud catholic.

If you were truly happy you wouldn’t feel the need to question the happiness of others. As for the rest of your religious diatribe … sticks and stones.

I went the opposite direction. I was once a religious zealot (I mean hard core, practically a fanatic). I studied theology for years, was involved with the church, the whole nine yards. Then one day I began to question things (that is as I grew more intelligent and reason began to overpower myth in my mind). I soon realized that religion is just myth and fantasy.

No god has ever shown himself to man. Why is that this god of yours has never manifested himself in a provable way to modern man, yet visited our ancient counterparts quite frequently (in ways that all on earth couldn’t help but to notice he was there)? This is the same for every religion, and of course there’s always a profound reason why these gods don’t appear to us today.

First century Christians were waiting around for the world to end. During the time of Galileo the CC thought the bible revealed an earth at the center of the universe. Well, the earth is not the center of the universe & the world didn’t end in the first century?

Religion had to keep coming up with profound reasons why god doesn’t appear to modern man. It was in their interest after all to keep a good thing going (good for them that is). This is the truth … you can believe it or not (I’m not really here to change any ones point of view, since frankly I have no real interest in shaping your beliefs).

We atheists are not compelled to evangelize our point of view (there’s no atheist rule book like a bible). We are simply guided by reason and reality.

Aquinas was quite the philosopher. He did some notable work on causation (which is a huge topic in metaphysics). He wondered whether there could be infinite temporal causation or not. He felt there couldn’t be because it would require an infinite slicing of time. Well, real physics eventually proved that time is sliced (to put it simply).

So I ask what is religion? It’s just a compilation of ancient myths conflated with rather old and outdated philosophical concepts (mostly proved incorrect by empirical evidence). This I believe is the objective truth.

Am I any happier now than when I was Christian … much happier actually.

Preach it, brother.

An unbeliever spends too much time thinking about himself, and not praying. If he were as smart as he thinks he is, he would keep quiet and search earnestly for the meaning of it all. He would not advertise gleefully that he doesn’t believe, and berate those that do.

It is a very childish attitude, but, being spritually blind, hw would never recognize, nor
admit it.

I will tell you this much. People on their deathbeds don’t act as though there is nothing on that other side. Funny, how unbelievers have the worst time of it. :hmmm: Makes you wonder what they are looking at on the other side.

could you say anything else? Isn’t this what you have to say to justify a lifetime devoted to a myth?

There’s no way the Christian could like me or not try to berate me using any means possible. Reason and logic is the enemy of religion, and it always will be (as Luther said: “reason is a whore” and the enemy of faith).

Just so you know … I’m on a really long business trip (and admittedly I’m bored). However, I’m quite happy in my life back home thank you very much; so no worries, in a few weeks I go back home (and you probably won’t have to hear me spew that filthy thing we call logic anymore). 😛

Im happy that you and the other athiest posted here, but this topic isnt for this thread. This topic was to tell the unbelievers to roll away the stone…the stone that blocks their sight from seeing the Living God. If we want to discuss logic and other things I`m willing to open a new thread.

Among the findings of two recent surveys (Baylor University and The Pew Polls) of religious faith, one in five of those who call themselves atheists believe in God or a universal spirit, and the majority of Americans who claim to be atheists are inclined to pray, one-third of them “often.” About the same number of atheists profess a belief in Satan, hell and demons.

go figure…
