Hello,
I am trying to suppress my tendency of believing in once saved always saved.
I am having a hard time with the following passage in Scripture
“And we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified” (Rom 8:28-20)
It would seem to me, just by reading it, that the “purpose” of God is driving all of these blessings. In another place, Paul calls it the “purpose of election” (Rom 9:11) wherein he determines the destiny of man before he/she is born and has the ability to do any good or evil. Look at what Paul says, there is an unbroken chain connecting God’s predestination, his justification, and glorification. It would seem to me that if someone is justified that means they are in this indestructible path of God’s purpose which works above and beyond our understanding.
Also consider Romans 9:10 “And no only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad – in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls – she was told ‘The older shall serve the younger’. As it is written ‘Jacob I loved, and Esau I hated’”.
It seems as though God had predetermined each man’s destiny before he/she is born and has the opportunity to do any good or evil. And he uses the example of a potter who has the freedom to just build whatever he wants.
Help!!
