There are ominous things happening in Uncle Sam’s backyard… news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4872522.stm

I’m all for South America forging its own path, moving to a more socialist position overall, and making economic progress. These are all good things. I can’t help feeling that the view prosperity matters more than human rights is deeply dangerous. China is no model to admire or imitate.
“The Chinese government has achieved the greatest victory in the history of human rights,” says Charles Tang, who heads the Brazil-China Chamber of Commerce and who has been behind many of the joint-venture initiatives.
"It has removed 400 million Chinese people from poverty
There is a lot wrong with that point of view and when the BBC present it as merely a debate
whether wealth or elections are a greater measure of freedom
the rot is spreading. We all know how little elections can mean but that doesn’t mean we want any one to have to live on the terms the Chinese govt provides. This is about more than that.

I couldn’t help feeling sorry for this guy
They wanted all the information we could give them
. He’s in for a rude awakening.

What can, will, and should be done about this by the rest of the world?

Nothing can be done about it. Any moves by the United States will immediately be attacked by the Hate America crowd.
