You see? It’s such a great thing that they already have to edit details and use gimmicks to sell their position.

Rather, rash judgment is a very serious thing, don’t you think?

Read it again. I describe the USCCB - the majority of which is laity. Did it specifically mention any given Bishop, or all of them? No. Rather, lay activists, as with all activists, being “change agents” seek positions of power and/or authority, whether it be in school, college, politics, or religion.

If you misunderstand - and I am frequently misunderstood - why not just ask?

Theo520:
It’s impossible for this to hurt the poor
I supposed that’s possible (although the scaling back of services to the poor will certainly hurt them), but it’s going to hurt the heck out of me.

The elimination of the deduction for state and local taxes will kill me, since I live in New York City. And the reduction of the mortgage interest deduction isn’t going to help, since I have a mortgage, and will have it for years to come.
why should the rest of the country subsidize you for living in new york city

I respectfully suggest you contact you city and state elected officials about reducing your tax burdens.

So now you are claiming that a statement from the USCCB does not represent the US bishops? If a bunch of self-seeking laity really did hijack the USCCB without the approval of the bishops themselves, the bishops would put a stop to that immediately. Everyone assumes, and rightly so, that a statement from the USCCB and signed by three of those bishops really does represent at least most of them if not every single bishop. So a charge that the organization is knowingly preaching a false gospel is certainly a charge that at least three of these bishops are engaged in serious evil, and that the rest of them, by their silent assent, are equally guilty of allowing the faithful to think that this “false gospel” really does represent them. No, I think your ideas are too far-fetched to be believed.

The purpose of this bill is to make sure everyone has skin in the game because almost half the country doesn’t pay taxes.
I hate when people throw this strawman out there. It’s a gross simplification. 45% don’t pay Federal income tax but 2/3 of that 45% pay social security and Medicare taxes (meaning they work) and half of them pay more in those taxes than they receive in income tax credits. Most still pay state income taxes. The other 1/3 would have income that is above the threshold to file but not subject to payroll taxes and have offsets - think social security recipients with tax exempt bond interest, capital gains, rental income with a loss, businesses with a loss.

Far more than 65% of Americans have skin in the game and it’s either willful misrepresentation or ignorance to suggest otherwise.

I don’t recall Jesus saying, or the Church teaching, that we should hurt the poor to favor the rich. If I’m wrong, I would be happy to be told where to find those teachings.
I don’t recall Jesus saying that we should hurt the rich to favor the poor, either.

Funny, but there’s no such thing as an “income tax” in the Internal Revenue Code.

This reads like any other special interest group pleading to retain deductions important to them.
I absolutely agree. In this case, the special interest is the poor. As the Church is the body of Christ on the Earth, his hands and feet, those who profess to be part of that body must serve the role of the hands of Jesus.

This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
And saved him out of all his troubles

Yes. And, it used to be that government is less involved in feeding the
hungry and the people were more involved. However, now we pay bureacrats
to distribute the food and administer the programs through FDA. And the
FDA is more involved in agriculture than it probably needs to be. But,
I’ve read the Constitution, and the USDA is legitimate; therefore, its just
a question of politics.
