“Wise Blood,” based upon the book by Catholic author Flanner O’Connor. It’s in color and has been OOP for many years (think it has only recently been issued on DVD, IIRC) so not many people know about it.
“The Prestige,” the magic-themed movie Christopher ‘Dunkirk’ Nolan made BEFORE ‘The Dark Knight.’ It’s got David Bowie cameo as Nikola Tesla – great movie. I don’t know why more people haven’t heard of it. Highly recommended for those who have never heard of it – nothing objectionable. It’s also in color.
“Sing Street” – also in color – from last year. Not to confused with the animated kids movie “Sing,” “Sing Street” is like a youth-group version of “The Commitments,” one of the my all-time favorites (white kids in Northern Ireland start a soul band), but I think it’s PG-13 so doesn’t have all the profanity “The Commitments” has, but it’s kinda sorta technically a remake of “The Commitments” but with 80’s new wave music (Duran Duran, The Jam, etc.) instead of soul. U2’s Bono reportedly likes it a lot, FWIW. It really was robbed of an Oscar nomination – it’s that good. I don’t know anyone who saw it who also didn’t love it – textbook uplifting, feel-good movie.
