This just restates the problem. If we’re born sick and commanded to be well, we have to work for it. And if to remain in exile is the Worst Thing That Can Ever Happen, then it can’t really be called a choice.
Ah, but you see, “worst thing” is a subjective description. It is not objectively true. For some, hell is better than facing God, because self-reliance and pride are more appealing to them than submission to the Supreme Being - even if they come to an awareness of the objective truth that hell is eternal torment and heaven is eternal joy. So, it is indeed a choice.
No, what I possess is a very common-sense understanding of what “eternal worship” is. If it was meant to be something other than endless praise and thanks, they would’ve called it something else.
By “common sense”, perhaps you mean “common among atheists”. Because that is not a “common” view held by theists.
When you say “they would’ve called it something else”, who’s they? “eternal worship” is not a phrase I’ve ever heard used as any official title for heaven. Regardless, if you’d like to limit yourself to a distorted understanding of heaven as nothing else but eternally bowing before God, or sitting in a pew singing, or endlessly pronouncing praises aloud to Him, then you go right ahead and do that, and convince yourself that it’s “common sense”. I can’t argue with someone who thinks he can possess an authentic understanding of God using nothing but an isolated, atheistic common sense, or someone who doesn’t worship God who nevertheless thinks they know what it means to worship God.
As you say, I did not ask to be Created, to be born into this exile, yet I’m expected to be thankful for the opportunity to work my way out of it. Just so I can spend an eternity continuing to be ever thankful for it. Thanks, but no thanks.
You’re not “expected” to do anything, no more than a prisoner is expected to want to be rescued. Look, I didn’t ask to be created either. None of us did. And we certainly wouldn’t choose to be condemned from the start. But you seem to think that since you didn’t “ask” for it, then it must not be true. Well, that logic doesn’t even follow a humanistic system of reasoning or common sense. You don’t base your understanding or belief of earthly things on only those aspects that you personally would want, or ask for. So why force that erroneous logic on the supernatural? We can certainly achieve a degree of authentic understanding of God, but reason must not be divorced from faith.
Most atheists base their disbelief on their insistence that God must provide “clear evidence” (a very vague and undefined demand) of Himself and must also fit nicely and simply into a humanistic concept of rationality, must follow the laws of science and “common sense”. God must fit into the world, in other words. When they realize He doesn’t do that, when they can’t capture Him in a box and study Him, it furthers their disbelief. As they live their lives in disbelief, something compels them to justify their unbelief, to discredit belief and believers. One of the justifications tends to be the invention of a sort of self-refuting false dichotomy. They claim God who Christians claim is all loving cannot exist, because this God’s intent is to create you, give you no evidence of His existence, force you to believe in Him and follow His commands, or else will send you to Hell for eternity. And since this is not “loving”, He cannot therefore exist.
So, they say, there really is NO choice because one of the choices is eternal torment, and who would choose that? And since there is no choice, God is a tyrannical dictator, not a lover, and hence the Christian God is a phantom of the imagination.
You have to realize that pride is what makes choosing against God a valid and even reasonable choice. Self-reliance and disdain for the demands of righteousness make choosing against God an authentic free-will and even appealing choice. The fact that God and His followers reveal to the world the reality of the after-death consequences of this particular choice (eternal torment and despair) is simply meant to reveal TRUTH. Atheists seize it as “proof” that the Christian God cannot exist, but they miss the point. The point is that it is reality. The saints have written that most people in Hell are the ones who DID NOT believe Hell existed. This is why it is important for God to reveal to his creation what it means for someone to separate themselves eternally from Him. He does not want that for anyone, yet He cannot make that reality cease to be. His eternal existence and our creation by Him in His image DEMANDS that we are either eternally among His family, or eternally separated from it.
The revelation of Hell is not a threat, it is a plea and beckoning to loved ones to choose eternal happiness.
