Iris,

When I read your first post, I wanted to reply with some hope since you seemed to indicate that he had suddenly changed within the last month. I’ve got to say though from reading your more recent posts, with him saying that he is not willing to sacrifice for your children, well that shows a pretty deep problem. It is possible that this isn’t a sudden change, just him finally showing his true colors.

I say even if he is cheating on you and even if this is only headed for divorce, do whatever you need to do to get back home. He needs to face the reality of what he has done to his family, and not hold you hostage to hoping when he is not even close to being honest with you. He is trying to have his cake and eat it too right now. He has done something unspeakably terrible, and he is trying to figure out how to come out of it not looking like the bad guy. I think it is important for him to see the reality of his destructive choices.

Also, when he sees a lawyer and discovers the true cost of child support, he is going to be thinking that it would be a better deal for him to have custody. You leaving the home with the kids leaves him with a possibility for that. For the sake of your kids you are going to need to return home and see a lawyer there or if you want to stay with your parents you will need to find a lawyer where they are and find out about filing for a legal separation. If you choose to do that, it will be really important to not communicate those intentions to your husband, so that he won’t have the opportunity to avoid being served. Really though, getting back home and getting together important paperwork - marriage certificates, birth certificates, evidence of his income and financial statements as well as any of the evidence that you mentioned above that shows that he is the one who abandoned the marriage - is probably still a good idea.

I hate to be giving you advice that makes your marriage being over as being inevitable, but I think you need to be prepared for that reality. It sounds like that is the reality that your husband is making a move toward.

Praying for you to be strong because I know that this is not at all easy. It’s not easy after 5 years of marriage, but I can tell you it is still very difficult after 17 years of doing everything to fight the inevitable.

Iris,
Hugs and Love. I kind of understand what you’re going thru, as I had been in a similar situation not long ago. I was blessed that mine did not quite come to the extent yours has, but it was close. I will echo what the others have said and tell you to GET THEE TO A LAWYER AND HOME ASAP! I know how hard this is to do when you are on such an emotional roller coaster, but for the sake of your children and yourself you must act now!!! I like others am not saying this will definitely end in divorce, but this is giving him the easy road out. Home is where you need to be, both for your financial and legal protection, and to bring your relationship and this fling of his to a head. If it is going to end, it will end with you being there or not being there, and if you are there, he will have to face himself and what he has done to his family. Concentrate on GETTING YOURSELF HOME FIRST AND FOREMOST AND GETTING TO A LAWYER LIKE YESTERDAY. I will keep you in my prayers.

Also as the others have said, avail yourself to the sacraments and The Church more earnestly now. This is most definitely an intense spiritual war!!! You are just about looking at Satan face to face at this point. Put on the armor of God.

We will be praying.:gopray2:

I can tell you from experience, crying and “waiting” for hubby to change his ways just doesn’t work. I do not believe that God intends for spouses to stay around allowing themselves to be punished by a selfish person looking for adventure. Been there, done that, and I would never do it again if I had my life to live over. Go home, pack his things, throw them out on the lawn, change the locks. All of this AFTER you call the lawyer. If he comes to his senses when he get served the papers, well and good, try again, but by no means have any false hope that you and he will live happily ever after.

If you do get together, make sure he is tested for HIV!!

Love and prayers,

Mom of 5

all of the above plus:

If you do eventually get back together, make sure to include tests for syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, herpes, you name it - all Sexually Transmitted Diseases as well as HIV. This other woman may not be the only one. You might think about getting these tests for yourself now since there is a high probability that he was unfaithful to you while you were still at home, despite his denial.

You need to go home and re-establish your rights. Make him take responsibility and bear the consequences for his actions and don’t let him ride roughshod over you.

And go see a priest and/or join a church group that offers support, like a prayer group.

I am praying for you.

I’d recommend getting all of the above tests even if you don’t end up back together again. I went and did all of the above and thank goodness they all came back negative, but it’s a good thing to know where you stand when you don’t really know what the man you married has been up to.

Well I called and told my husband that we will be going back in a couple of weeks. He was not pleased, he sounded very upset. He barely even talked to me. 😦
I will call a priest tomorrow to see what advice he can give to me.
If anyone has a favorite scripture verse it would really help me out.
Thankyou all for your prayers and advice

Sweetie, all these suggestions to go home are with one big caveat: DO NOT GO HOME IF THERE HAS BEEN ANY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. IF YOU THINK HE WILL BE PHYSICALLY VIOLENT OR IF YOU HAVE REASON TO BE AFRAID OF HIM, DO NOT GO HOME.

Saying that, this is hanging on my wall:

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29: 11-13

That is the thing I’m not so sure about going back. I don’t think that he would physically hurt me in front of the kids. But on the other hand he can get a really bad temper. So I just don’t know. I guess I’am anxious about having to go back.😦

Thankyou sooo much Liberanosamalo. Jeremiah 29:11 is the first verse that I ever memorized. Years ago I was going through a difficult time and the priest I spoke with gave me this verse. It has gotten me through a lot of things in my life. It is my favorite verse and I remember it throughout the day. It is like a sign from God that you happen to mention this verse to me. 🙂

Iris,

How old are you children? Are they both his children also?

My oldest is four years old and we also have a baby. They are both my husbands. As I mentioned my spouse was upset about us going back home. So I don’t think it would be a good idea. What can I do to make sure I can keep my kids if he is in Florida and I’m in another state?

Oh, those poor children. I am so sorry. I can’t imagine a father feeling that way about his own kids. There is definitely something seriously wrong with this man’s make-up. He sounds controlling and manipulative, and potentially abusive. You need to see a lawyer NOW. Don’t wait any longer. I believe firmly in the sanctity of marriage, as strongly as any loyal Roman Catholic possibly could, but what you have on your hands is a serious violation of vows and a dangerous situation. Your only thought now must be protecting your children and yourself, and unless this man does a SERIOUS 180 – marriage counseling, accountability, change of job, etc. – you have to prepare for whatever it takes to get out of there. Get a darn good lawyer, and protect those kids. And may our Holy Mother go with you.

Iris,

If you are not going to go back right away, then find a lawyer where you are. He should at least be able to give you info on your rights and possible repercussions for not going back. You need some legal advice NOW. I feel strongly that it is not wise to wait to seek some legal counsel. He might even be able to patch you up with a good lawyer in Florida for some phone counsel. Your 1st priority has to be protecting your children and yourself. After all that has happened, at this point you can’t even consider taking into account HIS FEELINGS!! I know that this is not me this is happening to, but really WHO CARES HOW HE FEELS?? HE IS VERY SERIOUSLY VIOLATING AND BETRAYING HIS FAMILY!! It is not a revenge thing to discard his feelings right now but it is a self protection thing. You have a right and a RESPONSIBILITY to protect yourself and your children.

you can do what has been advised, get a lawyer pronto, get him evicted and move back in your own home. If there has been violence in the past, get the lawyer to help you serve a restraining order. we can’t help you on this forum if you refuse to help yourself. Why on earth did you call and tell him your intentions? your lawyer should have the only contact with him from now on.

Oh, dear. I think maybe we ought to refrain from scolding our friend here and focus on supporting her. Yes, she has been given good advice based on the information she provided (excluding other circumstances about which none of us is aware), but we must remain gentle with her. She is going through a very rough time. If she truly wishes to help herself, then let us help to inspire in her the courage to do so. The right thing is rarely the easy thing to do.

Iris,

Psalm 34 was a great help to me during a similar situation. I’m praying for you. If you really have reason to be afraid of your husband when you go home, take someone with you. Keep close phone contact with your extended family and friends who care about your wellbeing.

Iris–I’m so sorry that this is happening:( …if you choose to not go home, then I would seek a lawyer, and get some things in motion. I would also try your hardest not to cry (it will be hard) around him…or over the phone. I would try to be very firm with him, and say…‘You’re not going to bully me. I have a lawyer now.’ Sadly, he is lost in his own sin…it happens to us all to varying degrees in our lives–but at this stage, as everyone has said, you need to take care of yourself and your children. I pray for your husband as well–because he is in the devil’s grip. 😦

I’m sooo sorry for this! You are in my prayers…I will look for some Scripture to send to you soon…Hang in there. May God give you strength to deal with this tough situation.

I would not say that. Revealing that you’ve talked to a lawyer does a couple of things.
  1. gives him the chance to find a lawyer or file something in their home state while Iris is still out of the state!
and
  1. gives the impression that Iris has already reached the “point of no return” and that reconciliation is not an option.
Try to see a lawyer THIS WEEK. (It will be hard, everyone is on vacation.)
Stay calm on the phone with hubby, reveal as little as possible.
Get home and assess the situation.
Decide what action to take next.

See a doctor for a full STD screening. It’s only marginally embarassing and the nurses will be understanding, they’ve seen this situation before. During my separation from my ex I was tested for 16 diseases. They do several swabs and draw blood for the rest of the tests, all on the same visit. It’s one less thing you have to worry about if you get all negatives back.

Very good advice, Cecilia.

Iris, if you were in Texas, the first thing you would do is set up child support and visitation arrangements, and file for a legal separation. Then you and the children are protected. I don’t know if the law in Florida is the same. Go to this website and start working on establishing your legal rights right now. You may not have to actually return to Florida, so get on the phone and start working to protect your rights.

I will keep you in my prayers. I’m so very sorry you’re going through this pain. I will also pray for the conversion of your husband and this other woman. May God bless and keep you and your children, Iris. Don’t despair.
