Unholy war as George Pell pelts priestAUSTRALIA’S Cardinal George Pell has hit back at a radical Catholic priest who branded the church’s bishops “low on creativity, leadership, education and even intelligence”.

On the eve of Holy Week, Australia’s Catholic priests are witness to a major row unfolding in The Swag, the magazine of the National Council of Priests. It began in January when retired Melbourne priest Eric Hodgens wrote an article in which he slammed the direction of the church under the Pope as a “reversal” of the second Vatican Council of the 1960s.

The article, which drew letters from priests around Australia, shocked many Catholics. Father Hodgens claimed former pope John Paul II, who will be beatified next month, had a “lust for power . . . taken to monumental proportions”. The Polish pontiff, he said, had re-emphasised “devotion to the static Real Presence” and “reinforced a distorted devotion to Mary”.

Father Hodgens sounds more like a Protestant than a Catholic. You see folks, this is a prime example of the lunacy of liberalism. Thank God for the Catholic Church and its conservative traditions. Now, all we need to do is weed out all the bad apples, like Hodgens.

This reflects the fact that the Church in Australia, like the Church in the West. has major problems. However these problems are being overcome as younger priests have been becoming more conservative and orthodox in recent years. This reform in the priesthood is reflected by the complaint in the article that Vatican II is being reversed. Such people have long proposed that the “spirit” of Vatican II calls for dissent from Catholic beliefs and even devotions, though younger priests–and the Pope–don’t buy this view.
I don’t buy the headline words, “unholy war.” Bishops have the responsibility to act for the spiritual benefit of those under them, even if this mean giving some correction–this is hardly unholy.

Translation: Fr. Hodgens is shocked, SHOCKED that the pope was actually catholic!

Really not my place to judge Cardinals or Priests. But, I think cardinal Pell handled this perfectly.

Regarding Fr. Hodgens, I’ve heard other catholics say similiar things. I also, think it’s not unheard of for people who serve an institution for most of their lives. To harbour frustrations. Sometimes leading to lashing out like Fr. Hodgens. Thats why we pray for the catholic church.
