Unique painting...what do you think?

At a local baptist college, one of the chapels has a mural on the ceiling of four men. These men are St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, and Calvin. Now, this is some foursome. After the initial humor of it, I began to think: which of these do not belong with the other? You can say the two reformers do not go with the Doctors of the Church, but I see another division. One of them seems out of place to me. Further, which of these do you think would get along the least? I have my thoughts, but I will save them for a few posts…

i would have to say St. Thomas Aquinas would be the “odd duck”.
 
If I’m not mistaken, Calvin was the only one who didn’t think Mary lived a sinless life. 😃

the first thing that popped out to me was that luther and calvin used augustine quite a bit whereas thomas seemed to say a lot which contradicts luther and calvin.

i think you could find reason to say any of them would be “odd”.
 
I know that calvin saw Augustine as being a fellow believer in pre-destination. I was thinking that Calvin was odd man out because of his denial of the Real Presence. You are correct that any of the three would not fit. I would also tend to think that Calvin’s total depravity doctrine would cause no small amout of entertaining dinner talk.

From the standpoint of a Baptist school, Aquinas seems not to fit the most.

remember though that calvin did not think it was merely symbolic. that was zwingli. calvin and luther sharply disagreed with him on that issue. calvin knew something happened there, he just didn’t think that Jesus was physically present in the accidents. he definitely believed He was spiritually present.

True. If these four would have been a strange lunch crowd, Zwingli really would have caused an issue.

You know, I encourage all Christians to read Augustine and Aquinas. I think that it is a shameful result of the Reformation that so many Protestants do not know about some of the great minds that have gone before us.
