So we’re agreed that capital punishment is wrong?Right, you’re going to have to draw your line of sight away from SOME Christians, and address the ones in front of you, because like anybody else, I cannot answer for other people.
Now you should probably go back and read what I posted, linked there was an answer to this question from Jesus Christ Himself.
Check out that answer, isn’t it a good answer? Isn’t it a decent and loving answer? Doesn’t it ring true?
Be honest.
Everything and anything would be OK for God regardless of what a human thought. God is God, and utterly inscrutable to you and I.
Consider the things the scriptures imply about Him when they describe Him - they seem to tell us God “experiences” time non-linearly, permeates the multiverse (or whatever actually exists) and can hold it all in His intellect and memory (or whatever He has that knows things)
If you and I cannot perceive as He does in an even slightly meaningful way, then logically we have not even got an idea of whether anything He does is good or bad or anything else, unless He informs us of this. As such, it is no more possible and makes no more sense for you or I to pass judgment on Him according to our tiny moral sensibilities, than to question how good a supernova seems to be at mathematics.
PS: Thanks for your comments earlier - you have drawn to my attention how angry I seemed, and that I need to think about whether I might drive people away from God through this.
I agree; we cannot get into the ‘mind’ of God…but that doesn’t stop people trying and claiming to! I see the Catholic church as a very successful institution because it holds so much power in this regard and can even, on occasion, go so far as to claim infallibility. You say you take your understanding of homosexuality from church teaching, back when you were a child - This is something I find difficult to understand…my experience and conscience says otherwise, and I reject that teaching. Now someone will say “how can you think you know better than God?” But I don’t. I don’t think that men in the Catholic church can know the will of God either. I’ve said what are my views on the OT.
Where then, can non Catholics get their ‘moral compass’ from? Lots of places. I’ve heard more ‘Christian’ ideas and sentiments (if you see what I mean!) from the various Seikh/Buddhist/Muslims who take their turns (along with Christians) to give their ‘thought for the day’ each morning on our BBC radio news programme, than I sometimes hear from Christians themselves (present company excluded).
For the record, I think you sound like a thoroughly nice person with some truly Christian feelings for people. I would hope that you don’t harden your heart because you perceive an ‘enemy’ at work. People who are marginalised by an institution get frustrated by intransigence and I guess they get fed up by being told they’re unnatural or whatever. No, I don’t believe it will become illegal to be ‘Christian’! If some religious beliefs come head to head with someone else’s belief(religious or not), then we are obviously, as a society, going to have to make decisions - maybe in court. That’s all part of living in society like we do in the west. We will never ALL be Christian let alone Catholic, so we’ll have to find better ways to rub along together!
