There is so much in your post that we could get lost in answers. I thought it would be best to concentrate on one thing at a time. You have used the word slander many times. I thought it might be advisable to define terms as I get the impression that you mean something different when you use slander.
is an untruthful oral (spoken) statement about a person that harms the person’s reputation or standing in the community.
Libel
An untruthful statement about a person, published in writing or through broadcast media that injures the person’s reputation or standing in the community.
Lie to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive.
You said
Its the baseless questions against character that he is raising that is so objectionable.
Baseless is trying to slander Anne’s character as a reason why her messages must be not true. But her Bishop, who knows her and has examined her, does not find fault with her character - only praise. Yet Salbato, who does not know and has not met her, feels qualified to publish web pages on his site that present her as having bad character - too tainted for the Lord to ever use! He has never met her: he bases his slander on rumors and “testimony” of an unnamed person who is remotedly and very questionalby connected to an alleged colleague. Thats baseless.
Baseless would mean no grounds. Correct? Does he have grounds? You have not shown that he does not. You accuse him of slander and I think you mean libel unless you have heard him say what you claim is a lie. You have not shown that what he has written is a lie. What the Bishop has found has no bearing on Salbato’s writing. It does not prove that what he writes is a lie. I read Unity Publishing on her and do not see where he says that her character is the reason why her messages aren’t true. Perhaps you can quote it directly. I did find that he is mistaken in his knowledge of annulments. I would not call it a lie for I don’t believe he is trying to deceive. He does identify the colleague as the chief executive who is listed on Anne’s web site. I am not sure what you mean by remotely and questionable. I don’t know if his information can be independently verified but he claims to have the proof through e-mail exchange. I cannot confirm nor deny this . Can you?

What this all comes down to is that you have not substantiated your claim of libel or that he has a tainted web site.

I don’t know – if its just going to be nitpicking, then what’s the point? I don’t know how I could have made myself any clearer, but I’ll go on a little more. 🤷
…You have used the word slander many times. I thought it might be advisable to define terms as I get the impression that you mean something different when you use slander.
"Slander is an untruthful oral (spoken) statement about a person that harms the person’s reputation or standing in the community. "…
I checked Dictionary.com, and the first definition of **slander **is: **“1.defamation; calumny: *rumors full of slander.” ***

I think that fits the bill perfectly since the first definition there of defamation is**:“the act of defaming; false or unjustified injury of the good reputation of another, as by slander or libel; calumny.”**

Certainly this is an unjustified inujury of the reputation of another.

Calumny by the way is the other word that comes to mind when I read Unity Publishing. That means: **“1.a false and malicious statement designed to injure the reputation of someone or something” **

Salbato’s published gossip, unsubstantiated, undocumented, should be viewed as false since there is no proof the accusation is correct. And we certainly can’t quibble about it being malicious.
Baseless would mean no grounds. Correct?
No, baseless means what I explained it means. Rumors from an ex-husband (whose ex-wife had to run to abuse counseling) who wishes to spread accusations about his ex-wife, anonymously, is not something to base defamation of character on, and publish it on your “Catholic” website. Thats what I call baseless!
Does he have grounds? You have not shown that he does not. .
There is no way that kind of slime needs to be investigated. No one needs to disprove that cheap brand of calumny. It just needs to be booed. And it does not belong on a website that calls itself Catholic.
…What this all comes down to is that you have not substantiated your claim of libel or that he has a tainted web site.
If its not enough for you than I don’t know what is. I really don’t see how you could not have a problem with this.

Sometimes nitpicking is used as an alternative to finding a point of agreement with people. 😦

Wow, I came upon this thread by chance. I just want to post something, not to debate how Eliza feels about Rick. I just wanted to post because I know him personally. I know his daughter a little better. He is a good man. I don’t always agree with his forcefulness, or views, he has a lot of vigor sometimes. But, what you see is what you get with Rick, he doesn’t hide anything. My husband and Rick email back and forth with each other, and Rick he is open for discussion with him. Anyways, his family is one of the most devoted to the Catholic faith I have ever met. They are also very knowledgeable. The thing I like about Rick is he is always at Church on Sunday, even if he doesn’t agree with some of the things that are going on there. He is devoted to Rome, and the true Church. He is pretty traditional, but, he hasn’t left for a schismatic church because of it. Overall he is a good man who loves the Church and his family more then anything. Eliza I suggest you send him a message if you have a big issue with him, it might help.

I am glad you wrote in. If you read the thread here, you can see I am not talking about how I feel about Rick. I don’t even know Rick, so I don’t have any feelings about him, other than how I feel about how he writes on his Unity Publishing website about other Catholics. That I do have an opinion on, which is explained on this thread.

I am glad you wrote to say what an upright person he is. It helps in case anyone else reads this thread and thinks its about what a bad person Rick is. If they mistakenly think that, we have your post here, from you who know him personally, to witness he is not a bad person, and in fact is an admirable one.

But even good and admirable people make mistakes. The mistakes he has made on his public website are mistakes that unfairly hurt the reputation of others. I have explained that already so I won’t repeat it. And I say it is good that he is knowledgeable, but that doesn’t mean he is infallible.

I was not responding to a personal correspondance with Rick. I have not personally corresponded with him and if I had, I would have written him personally. I am instead responding to a public offense, on a Catholic website. Another Catholic has been unfairly detracted, publicly. Thats why my complaint about it is a public one.

I write here because the public website, Unity Publishing, is one that others on this forum have quoted as a source. I am writing to warn that this is not a good source to quote from, for the reasons I give.

I write in particular defense of one person whose character has been clearly wrongly slandered, and to warn that the spirit of uncharitablily on that website, that is so very evident in the case I tell of (a spirit that is not of the Holy Spirit, Who is the Spirit of Truth), perverts what truth is there, and causes scandal.

Because of the strong and unapologetic tone of the pages I cite, it is reasonable to assume this is not an isolated incident on that website. And at least one writer on this thread agrees that Salbato’s writings are uncharitable not only in this instance. I have certainly not done an investigation of Salbato’s entire site. The deplorable reporting on this one person is enough to turn my stomach, and I do not want to read more there.

My hope that in response to this public criticism of a very real problem on his public website, Salbato will seek wise counsel (a wise man seeks the counsel of many) concerning this complaint about the uncharitable tone and unfairness of his judgments on his website, and remedy the situation.

I am truly glad to hear Rick Salbato is a man of faith and a loving family man. There is not enough of that these days, and every man that thus can be said of is a reason to rejoice in the good work of God.

I don’t think that Rick would claim to be infallible. It is also his website, so you really can’t regulate him, or it.

Well, you can post what you want when you want… I said I was coming on here to argue with you. I just wanted to speak on his charecter and tell you that if you think it is so wrong what he has done to contact him, he would listen to you. You might get more done that way. I don’t know how often Rick comes on CA.

That is your opinion, which is fine… These other people don’t seem to agree with you.

Again, you are more than intitled to post what you want. I just wanted to be a witness to his charecter. You say he is being uncharitable. I say, talk to him about it. He has strong views, but, he would be willing to talk to you about it. I think that is a good thing. You can say what you post on here is slander too in your defintion.
My hope that in response to this public criticism of a very real problem on his public website, Salbato will seek wise counsel (a wise man seeks the counsel of many) concerning this complaint about the uncharitable tone and unfairness of his judgments on his website, and remedy the situation.
I am sure he would.

It is all good… We need to keep eachother on our toes. I just couldn’t read all of this without saying what I know about him.

One thing that bothers me a lot about Salbato is that he speaks disparagingly about divorced women. In the sinful times we live in, there can certainly be serious reason for divorce. A marriage takes two people of good will. One is not enough. God normally does not violate the will of man. So one can be divorced and blameless. But Salbato uses the word divorced like a Scarlett letter. Its not right.
…sensing that divorce is your issue…

I sense that you feel hurt or disparaged or demeaned personally, by things you have read on the Unity Publishing web site.
I’m not your psychoanalyst; I connect dots.
