pathia,

If you don’t mind me asking why can’t you get health insurance?
I am a transsexual/intersexed individual. They deny me coverage on this basis, even when they have no legal obligation to cover anything related to that condition.

So you mean to tell me that you have tried applying to several insurance companies and all of the ones you have tried have rejected you?

I’d feel guilty then, I’m not really a practicing Catholic anymore. I’d feel like I was using them, even if it was technically a ‘good’ cause, it would make me feel incredibly guilty.
Yes, I’d see how you feel.

However, you never know. You may find a community that will accept you and maybe that’s what you’re looking for? I’d say that’s the first step to practice the faith.

Yes, they completely reject me, and don’t offer any other choices or plans. I have a stack of about 20 rejection letters.

I’ve tried about seven churches, no dice so far. I’m moving to another state soon though.

I have my doubt but since you said I will give you the benefit. If that is so why are you not starting a health savings account? Or have you already? These are very good accounts and alternatives to health insurance.

I have about twenty of those.

What savings? I owe something around 400,000 in medical bills. My total medical debt over my lifetime so far is around a million dollars. I’m only 28. The reason it’s only 400,000 as opposed to the full amount is because I’ve already done two bankruptcies.

Read the last few pages of this thread and you will see.

I am sorry to keep prying into your life but; why do you have such high medical bills?

Then why do Canadians live longer and why does the World Health Organization rank Canada’s UHC system as superior to that of the U.S.?

The only thing the U.S. health care system ranks number one in, is money spent on health care!

A lot of people arguing opinion around here, and when facts and statistics are presented, they are simply dismissed as being leftist and of being skewed.

I mean, people on this thread have even dismissed life expectancy and infant mortality rates as having absolutely no correlation to health care! ( Canada’s infant mortality rate is lower than the U.S. and as mentioned, both men and women live longer in Canada than in the U.S.)

The U.S. only has 0.2 more doctors per 1000 people than Canada…do you really believe that there is a massive shortage of Doctors in Canada? There isn’t.

The Canadian system is far from perfect, but far from perfect still gets health care to every citizen and statistically we still live longer than Americans…so something must be going right.

If you won’t accept the fact that U.S. health care system is among the worst in the developed world…then it will never improve.

The U.S. system, quality care for those who can afford it.

Your comments are simply not true. You would be aware of this had you read any of the articles posted by me or others like me who are opposed to UHC.

Oh, so the statistics gathered from an American source, the CIA, posts incorrect information regarding infant mortality and life expectancy.

That’s good to know! Thanks, what does the CIA know anyway?

The World Health Organization, what do they know eh?

If you won’t accept the numbers as fact…but prefer individual stories and opinionated rhetoric…then I suppose I’m done.

I have had the following problems in my life, while not on insurance.

1998 to now: I developed osteoporosis at the age of 18, and fight it now.

1998-2002: I developed pneumonia so bad that I required hospitalization every single winter. This happened possibly because of my homelessness at the time.

1998, 1999, 2001: I was assaulted and required a trip to the ER to make sure I was OK due to head trauma.

2003: Appendicitis

2008 (Only a few weeks ago): Bacterial meningitis that was resistant to most antibiotics, I was hospitalized for a few weeks. I’ve only just got out, and I am physical therapy, it was so bad I may never be able to work again full time.

Birth-2008: About once a year to every 18months I have reoccurring infections and severe problems involving with a surgery that was done to me when I was an infant. This is most likely what led to the above problem. I won’t go into any more detail on this one, because it is well…gross.

There are many incidentals here and there as well that add up, and of course prescription drugs to control my birth defects. My endocrine system functions as neither male or female, it has to be forced to operate correctly and the drugs that do that are exceptionally expensive.

Well if you read one of the articles I posted you will learn that the first few years under a Universal Health Care system are generally pretty good. Then after lets say 5 years that is when the system starts to fall apart, and you get health rationing (senior citizens are denied health care), old machinery (government can’t afford it), doctors are over worked (government decides how many hours a doctor is to work), long waiting lines (government decides who gets health care, when and why) and let us not forget a significant increase in taxes (you think health care is expensive now just wait till you see your tax bills).

I am not giving opinion I have given facts, I have given your the health care bill in the UK, I have given you the wait time increase in Canada, I have given you situations where the government takes control over how much the doctor is suppose to work and how much they get paid. Universal Health Care simply doesn’t work, not because I say so but because it has failed in the countries that they currently have it. Just ask the “father” of universal health care, he agrees.

With regards to the World Health Organization and Canada;

Gee I wonder why they may think that:

Some W.H.O.-private sector partnerships
  • Aeras: Aeras Global TB Vaccine Foundation (aeras.org)
  • DNDi: Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (dndi.org)
  • FIND: Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (finddiagnostics.org)
  • IAVI: International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (iavi.org)
  • IOWH: Institute for One World Health (oneworldhealth.org)
  • IPM: International Partnership for Microbicides (ipm-microbicides.org)
  • MMV: Medicines for Malaria Venture (mmv.org)
  • MVI: Malaria Vaccine Initiative (malariavaccine.org)
  • PATH: Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (path.org)
  • PDVI: Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative (pdvi.org)
  • TB Alliance: Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (tballiance.org)
Just about all of these groups support W.H.O. financially oh and they also are big supporters of Universal Health Care. So you don’t suppose that W.H.O, which is an UN organization, would possibly be influenced by others do you?

Well I am really sorry to hear about your situation. It is very unfortunate. But I still have to disagree with you about the Universal Health Care. Having said that I will be praying for you and I hope that a parish welcomes you soon with open arms. God Bless.

I don’t necessarily demand UHC, I just need something different. Something, anything, really.

From my perspective, what is in the US right is completely utterly broken. Just as broken as my own body!

Again I don’t think it is broken I think government needs to get out of the way and then you will see it work. I think the government is the reason it is so expensive and why it is difficult for some, like yourself, to get health insurance.

It is impossible to get insurance because it is legal to discriminate against me. That is something only the government can fix. They are not using any sort of loophole that the government created through endless laws to deny me, they deny me because they can. It’s as simple as that, until they are told ‘no you can’t’ they will do so. It is simply not in their interest, because they cannot make money off of me because I am so sickly.

Insurance companies simple do not deny anyone according weather or not they are transsexual. They are probably denying you insurance because of your risk rating. Now since the government has mandated tons and tons of services that insurance companies have to have they just drives up your risk rating tag that with being a transsexual that probably drives your risk rating over the top. Plus having 400,000 dollars worth of medical expenses probably doesn’t help you much either. So these are the things to consider. I hate to put it so forward like that but that is how an insurance company works.

Still works in Canada. 👍
