My friend found this Church who says they can ordain him in their faith he is catholic so is there a problem with this? by the way he wants to because his sister is going to marry outside the catholic church and he thinks if he is ordained and as a catholic he will be able to marry her and later convince her to be married in a catholic church
peace and blessings

Your friend is very ignorant of his Catholic faith, I’m afraid. First, this “church” that can “ordain” him is not a Church and thus has no authority to ordain him. Second, in officiating at the wedding of his sister, he would be acting exactly contrary to the teaching of the Church of which he claims to be a member. Please do all you can to dissuade him from this very wrong-headed action.

Thank you I will do all in my power to make him understand
peace and blessings

This church is a joke. I remember joining back in high school, you type your name and boom they let you download a printable certificate saying you are a minister of the universal life church. Please don’t take any more serious than you kid brother writing up such a certificate.

**it’s not accepted as any type of catholic, they have no lines of apostolic succession and offer no proper catholic training. 😦 **

It’s a scam, plain and simple. Just ask Rev. Fuzzy Walstead.

Who is Rev. Fuzzy Walstead, you may ask? There is a local scamologist, Detective Bruce Walstead (I think he is with the Franklin Park, IL police department). Some time ago he got his dog Fuzzy ordained a minister from one of these mail-order ordination outfits.

This is just a non-catholic ordination, which is not valid as a real ordination. It is like starting your own church and having them vote you as pastor. Or going to Bible College and getting a certificate that says you are a pastor. It just is more convenient and quicker, but in the same way is incompatible with how Christians have always viewed ordination as something that comes from the Apostles.

If they are looking at getting a non-catholic wedding, just pay 50 dollars and get a rent-a-judge, it is much better than getting an online ordination.

Ordination can only come from Jesus in succession from the Apostles by the laying on of hands. Even if the government recognizes it, that means nothing. They recognize Scientology as a religion too.

God Bless

or hire a Rent-A-Priest.
but they are out of communion with the church.

I agree they might be out of communion but still that is a much better than going for a personal fake ordination.
I have experience in this as I have lived it.

Why not go rent a priest, maybe someday one of those Priests would come back into communion. At least there is a very good chance of a valid ordination and if the person is that far from the Church to consider a personal online ordination then at least a touch of the faith is better than none at all.

I am pretty sure that by doing this he will incur automatic excommunication (latae sententiae) from the Catholic Church since he will be in schism per canon law 1364.

Don’t do it!

What if I get my dog ordained 😛 ?

Catholics who would do this most likely are cafeteria Catholics anyway and wouldn’t care what the Church teaches about excommunication.

Is there any official guidance (Vatican or other document) about this particular issue?

Thank you.

See the canon law I mentioned for starters.

Excuse me for saying so but should we not love our neighbor. I was raised a catholic but choose not to follow the teachings of the faith I was born into. You say the Universal Life church is not a real church or go even further to say that it is not a real religion, do you all say that about all religions that are not catholic? Tell me do you say the same about Jehovah’s or Christian Science or are rabbis really ordained are pastors really ordained by the Methodist church?

Being ordained by the Universal Life Church may seem to be wrong by the catholic church standards but none the less Universal Life is a religion as well as the ULC is a church and every one ordained through the ULC are recognized ministers. Now the ease of becoming ordained through the ULC may open doors for people that don’t take it seriously and ordain their pets like “Fuzzy” but in reality is it the ULC that should be blamed for the actions of individuals that have nothing better to do with their time?

The ULC is a non-denominational church open to all. We believe that we are all equals under the same universe and never judge another for the way they choose to live their life as long as they break no laws or infringe on the rights of others then so be it. As minister of the ULC we never portray ourselves as catholic priests that can join two people in marriage that would be recognized by the Catholic Church, but we are ordained ministers that within the law can officiate marriages legally as long as they register in the states that registration is required.

Educated people should understand that in life we sometimes come across people that are different in so many ways and believe in different things and who live their lives in a way that is not consistent with the ways you were taught to live. But in reality they are living their lives in a way that brings happiness and joy.

We believe that we should live life to the fullest and to help others do the same. We never judge people for the way they choose to live their life or what they believe in. We are open to all regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or religion. We are open to all because we accept all as equals under the same universe and what may be right for you may not be right for everyone.

Yes that is even to include Catholics. We are not here to judge you for your choice of religion or how you choose to live your life. You all are living your life and worshiping god in a way that brings joy and happiness to your life this is good. We are not judgmental and we are not trying to drag people away from their beliefs. So why do you all choose to say the things you do about my church and my choice of worship? I guess we all have to look at ourselves in the mirror.

I guess what I am trying to say is if you want your marriage recognized by the catholic church then don’t look outside the church to be married and love one and other accept people as equals and never judge people for the way they choose to live their lives because there is already too much hate in the world.

Sincerely,
Reverend George Crevatas

Excuse me for saying so but should we not love our neighbor.
Welcome to CAF. 🙂

A large part of loving our neighbor is loving him enough to want him to know the truth of Christ and His Church; all others are side channels of greater or lesser worth in living and worshipping as He would have us do; thus we, in charity, must call them back to He Who gave us One Church, His Body and His Bride.
I was raised a catholic but choose not to follow the teachings of the faith I was born into. You say the Universal Life church is not a real church or go even further to say that it is not a real religion, do you all say that about all religions that are not catholic? The Universal Life denomination and the Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Christian Scientists are neither Christian nor churches; the Methodists (and Lutherans, Presbyterians, etc.) are Christian, but also are not churches. Those religious denominations thus do not have authentic ordinations that conform their ministers as true priests of Christ. So, yes. The Orthodox, however, are Christian, Apostolic and Churches, so they, like the Catholic Church, do have true ordinations.

It is not “hate” to state truthfully where our differences lie, nor to point out that where those differences greatly diverge from Christ’s Self-Revelation adherents of those denominations or groups, whether Christian or not, are putting their souls in grave danger.
