It would be against Christian faith and apologetics to allow someone to purposely violate the Catholic canon law. That, in our Bible, is like allowing someone to fall off the deep end and saying that you loved him/her. If you truly loved someone, you would tell them the truth as God expected you to, without judging (since that is God’s job).

I am not judging your church. I know very little about it, but I know it is not Catholic. What you have stated speaks very little about living a Christian life which is our duty as baptized Christians (I assume you are baptized since you were raised Catholic). Just allowing someone to live a “good life full of happiness and joy” does not speak of the true love of a brother. It appears they are missing something, because they don’t have God. Now, I understand that you are non-denominational, and you probably have Christians within your church, but Jesus created the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church by setting St. Peter as the first Pope. That Church is still alive today.

Just granting a person the right to live a life that they choose is not enough. Each and every one of us is called by God to follow Jesus. Do you have questions about the faith that we could answer? May I ask why you left?
We believe that we are all equals under the same universe and never judge another for the way they choose to live their life as long as they break no laws or infringe on the rights of others then so be it.
You are right that we are all equals, and it’s good that you don’t judge another, but what law are you following? Civil law? Christian law? Following Christian law is the best choice because it encompasses civil law. Following civil law and forgetting Christian law is a mistake. I remember a quote in Scripture that says, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and give to God what is God’s.” You may pay your taxes, follow speed limits, not murder anyone, etc. I did all this for years before I found my true Catholic faith. God encompasses all. If you are a true follower of Scripture and what the Church decrees, then you won’t break any law.

I hope this helps. Let me know if there are any questions I can answer as I have studied Catholic apologetics when I came back to the Church. 🙂 May God bless you!

if a person gets married by an “ordained minister” by the ULC does it hold any legal weight? i went to my cousin’s wedding and it was a joke. they put their hands on vougue magazine and car and driver magazine when swearing their vows. it was just all too weird…no wonder she is my estranged cousin.

Unfortunately, there is nothing that prevents them from doing these things. However, internet “ministers” are a joke. They are not recognized in the Catholic Church. Pertaining to the marriage license, if both spouses signed the document and the “minister” signed it, it is recognized as a civil marriage.

And, not to be so blunt, but if their wedding started out as a joke, think of the problems they are going to have later on. :nope:

Yes, most states recognize ULC ordinations as valid.

it’s been tried,
ULC will recind ordination as soon as they find out.

hmm, maybe my cat thou,
The Reverend Fuzzy Lumpkins, at large…
Discrimination against dogs! Shameful. 😃

The ULC is legal in a number of states though as I recall they warn you that they are not legally able to perform marriages in all states.

My advice is to simply look at the ULC and the near instant ordination and ask yourself some questions (the whole Catholic issue aside). They require no training (education) and rather loose belief system. They have no recognition in terms of being able to serve in federally recognized chaplaincies (eg Veteran’s Affairs, Federal Bureau of Prisons and so on).

When you look at the deeper meaning behind ordination and what is involved ask yourself whether you would consider this to be honoring God.

If you are a Catholic this is just a BIG NO NO. Not even for your dog 😃

I tell ya…I get so tired of people pulling this card when they don’t like something about Catholics or the Church. Please stop using this as an excuse. It’s sad that someone like you, a born Catholic, is talking about a sad topic. You’re supposed to be standing behind Holy Mother Church, not talking rumors and gossip. :tsktsk: The Church does not stand behind those who have taken advantage of children. I know I don’t…

I appreciate your voicing your opinion, though it is an uncharitable one.

A priest in Massachusetts is uncovered as a pedophile, and that somehow makes Christ and His Gospel go away, and renders His Apostles and their successors irrelevant? Even if my own priest were to be uncovered as a pedophile, I would not lose faith in Christ, nor would I cease attending His Church, nor cease living as He instructs me through the Bible and through Tradition.

If one runs away from every church or spiritual organization where there is fault, one would end sitting alone in a quiet room, afraid to look in the mirror.

Indeed, the errors among Catholics, even among Catholic leadership, are not sufficient to justify a rejection of Catholicism and an embrace of a church that teaches, well, nothing.

Lol I’m Catholic and I’m now a minister for the “church” just so I can have the title of Doctor.

Firstly.

Nobody hears about your fake church doing anything because everyone can become an ordained minister, even paedophiles. Also its not ‘‘only the Catholics’’. Are people this ignorant in real life too or is it just on the interwebz?

Second, don’t even bother to pull this card every time Catholics prove you wrong.

Third, please learn to spell.

My friend found this Church who says they can ordain him in their faith he is catholic so is there a problem with this? by the way he wants to because his sister is going to marry outside the catholic church and he thinks if he is ordained and as a catholic he will be able to marry her and later convince her to be married in a catholic church
peace and blessings
yes there is a huge problem as joining this church, much less accepting their “ordination” or other “sacraments” is the grave sin of apostasy, and he will be excommunicating himself, and require lifting of that excommunication before he can come back to the Catholic Church and her sacraments.

I’m been an ordained ULC minister since 2006 and have nothing against the Roman Catholic Faith it has every right to set rules and standards in their Church. But you do understand that many people of faith don’t fit in the mold of a traditional path of ordination or similar road that you would recognize.

In my area alone several Wiccan and similar path clergy joined the ULC because of one reason they wanted the powers to perform legal marriages and get the tax benefits for their religious groups. Its far easier attaching to an existing church and they do have a real church and hold services at the HQ its not just an internet faith. For those religions you either learn on your own or in a structured coven or similar practical approach, which is legitimate. If I recall in the Dark Ages didn’t most village priests have little more than a year of training, got ordained then put back in their home village to be the religious figure? Most barely knew how to read Latin and could barely get a feel for their faith at that level of education I suspect. I would say any serious seeker would have at least a comparable education if not higher just not through a seminary process.

But as an American we have the First Amendment in play and I’m shocked your churches followers would go after our Church when the state can decide this faith is right and this one is wrong - its a dangerous threat to us all. What if tomorrow they said well Catholics have some pedophiles maybe the state should step into the process of approving them or maybe you don’t allow women priests that is illegal so you must ordain them or lose your tax-exemption? Don’t think this if a fallacy in China unofficial churches you know are cracked down on many attached to the Roman Catholic faith. Such is always a risk.

ULC has roots in the baptist church and has no catholic roots at all.
the only thing they are really good for is basic bible study.
and since they ordain anyone without any training or study are not seen as a formal church by the catholic church and are sort of a novelty.

yes, but we catholics follow the catholic tradition, which was set forth long before that. the catholic church has it’s own laws which were in place for 1000’s of years.

The Universal Life Church is a fully licensed and accepted church in all 50 states. If your friend does get ordained through them (as many do for that specific reason) then he will be able to officiate at their wedding. Just have him register with the county if it is required.
Ordination can only come from Jesus in succession from the Apostles by the laying on of hands.
God Bless
Scylla
If that’s the only requirement, then there are alot of choir boys out their who have been ordained. Am I right?

What gives any of you the right to bash the Universal Life Church? Is there a specific forum or thread for bashing other religions? Maybe one for the Mormons, one for the Jews, one for Anglicans.

If you believe your religion to be the 'One" religion then that’s great. I’m happy for you. There are however there are thousands of religions and religiuos groups in the world today, some are much older than the Catholic Faith, each one with their own set of beliefs. Every single person belonging to each and every one of these religions is entitled to their own opinion as far as their religion goes, just as you are.

Nobody has the right to make jokes or disparaging remarks about another religion. The debate about religion has caused wore death and destruction over the years that WWI & WWII combined had less caualties.

The Universal Life Church is indeed a real church. They are recognized as such by the governments of North America. The ordainations are unusual but they are legal and whether your church agrees or disagrees they are true ordination and unter the law are as valid as any ordaination in the Catholic Church.

It’s a great thing to be able to be true to your religion I’ll let you be true to your’s and I ask you to let me be true to mine. Stop Bashing the Universal Life Church:thumbsup:

 I’m trusting since you do not stand behind those who have taken advantage of children that you truly didn’t mean to say “rumors and gossip”, right?

The ULC (Modesto CA) at least the original ULC demands a full legal name and address, and logically assumes that the party is acting of their own conscience to become a clergyperson. And its not instant they must record you in the church records it takes 48 hours.

As for being a joke many of us have educations you know Wiccan ULC people have their version of clerical education etc. Even the member with parody sorts of faiths to you have perhaps a real understanding that its real for them. Not to mention Humanists and others who have a philosophical path that is their way.

This church is a joke.
Funny, I’ve never heard them refer to the Roman Catholic Church as a “joke”.

Unless your a member of their church and know the inner workings, no matter how “lite” they may be, to make a statement like that is really uncalled for.
