I am still fine-tuning my schedule for the semester and thought that it might be interesting to take a 200 level Religion course on Catholicism. I went today and ran into some teachings with which I am not familiar. At your leisure, feel free to educate me.

Are these true:
  1. The Gospels of Mark, Matthew, and Luke are not attributed to the specific apostles. The Gospel according to Mark influences the Gospels according to Matthew and Luke. This is a apparently position supported by the Instructio given on the eve of Vatican II (I have not verified this)
  2. The Blessed Virgin did not remain a virgin during birth, as such a birth would have detracted from Christ’s human nature (this of course is contrary to St. Thomas)
  3. Our Lord was not aware of his own identity (I seriously doubt this since I’m sure at some point Jesus said “Before Abraham was, I am”
I have decided that regardless of the veracity of these statements, I will not be enrolling in the course on Catholicism. I simply do not trust my catechesis to a university. Nonetheless, I would like your (name removed by moderator)ut. Thank you.

I am not a theological scholar, but my understandings are:
  1. An opinion held by some scholars. Debateable. Definitely not a doctrine of the Church.
  2. Absolutely wrong. Contrary to the doctrine of the Church.
  3. Likewise absolutely wrong.

That’s what I thought. Thank you, this confirms my decision.
