How very sad. I’ve head good things about the Newman Center at U of I. This has to be a shock.

I heard about it yesterday in the car. Just one more sad thing going on here.

Wow! How sad. I had to read the comments on the U of I website. My son is a freshman at a different campus and I am sad that so many young people have been exposed to this type of irresponsible behavior on that part of a priest. I know we need to pray for him, bt we also need to pray for all the young people that now are deciding that priests are hypocrites.

Well, at the college level, I would hope they were already well aware of some notorius priests of times old. A couple of popes, and a bunch of Bishops come to mind also. Oh yeah, and the payouts on the scandal we cant seem to stop hearing about here.

You know, my son has been well schooled, but college age kids are still very impressionable and it their first time away from home. He has many friends at U of I and I am sure they are all talking about this.

I am sure they are talking about this, and I do think you should talk this out with him before he ends up hearing some wacky viewpoint on the Church over this.
Sorry you have to deal with this.

Hopefully an official statement of apology will come out.

I am especially saddened by this news. I attended U of I and was first introduced to Catholicism at St. John’s where I attended RCIA classes. I have recently moved to Michigan but I continue to long for the church I left back at home. St. John’s truly is a beautiful church with a wonderful community; I will pray for them during this hard time.

The Church is not contained in a building at St.John’s. The Church is not contained at St. Peter’s in Rome.

This should hardly be more shocking than the horrors that have taken place in ugly churches, or beautiful ones.

Is this more shocking than Dan McCormick? Or the litany of priests that have committed atrocities to children in that very same Archdiocise? Or all the property the Church has had to sell that was hard earned generations ago by the sweat of the immigrants who desired to sacrifice to have some sacred space here? Who’s gradchildren are being told not a penny of the payouts are coming from the donations? Yet they ARE. The donations of the now dead, who are swept under the carpet!

Yet this, is a major shock?

It is a major shock to me. I am sorry if that upsets you for some odd reason. Also, by no means was I saying that the Church is contained at St. John’s; I was saying that I continue to miss St. John’s now that I have left it. St. John’s was where I was first acknowledged God (and trust me, that’s saying a lot) so it does hold a special place in my heart. Also, physically, St. John’s IS beautiful but I was not speaking of it’s beauty in a physical sense. I am especially sadden because of all the negative publicity the parish will be receiving when truly it is a great place where one can grow.

Maybe you should re-read my post.

Just to clarify, St. John’s Catholic Newman Center (and the University of Illinois) is located in the Diocese of Peoria, not the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Simply because there are other scandals (and worse scandals) out there doesn’t mean that it still doesn’t come as a shock when it occurs, particularly for those who are closely connected. Every scandal is a shock regardless of frequency. And in a diocese that I’ve often heard described as one of the most “conservative” at the largest Newman Center in the country - I can understand people’s shock. I, too, am shocked. Does it shake my faith? Not in the least. But it is still shocking.

This whole ordeal is doubly sad and shocking because it happened less than a week after the grand opening of their new facilities. This community certainly needs our prayers.

I can only ask that everyone please pray for this priest and for others involved if this case turns out to be for real. Prayers are definitely needed
Prayers & blessings
Deacon Ed B
