University of Illinois students express support for fired Catholic professor [CNA]

Peoria, Ill., Jul 17, 2010 / 06:52 am (CNA).- Since the news of Dr. Kenneth Howell’s dismissal from the University of Illinois became public, students have been voicing their support for the professor and making efforts to bring him back to the university in the fall.

Howell was terminated this spring from his teaching position at the university for explaining in his Introduction to Catholicism class that the Catholic Church opposed homosexual behavior because it violates natural law.

An anonymous student complained that Howell’s statements were “hate speech.” Howell was subsequently fired, however, he maintains that he was simply presenting Catholic teaching in a class on Catholic thought.

University: Where you learn academic cowardice and hypocricy, 21st century style.

Actually, and this is a quiet little sin of mine, I quite delight in such rash and stupid decisions by the educated elite. By censoring all opposition to their credo, young minds never have an opportunity to hear any reasonable or rational counter-arguments to the mainstream mantra. So when you are at a party discussing serious matters, and someone begins attacking the Church for its beliefs, and you begin to argue, they are usually dumbfounded- along with the crowd that has gathered to here an argument that was forbidden them most of their lives. Abortion, gay marriage, homosexuality, etc., (I live in a University town) are so poorly defended and their advocates -never having engaged in a serious argument about the topics that require rational and reasonable arguments- fall dumb and deaf and spin a web of hypocricy so thick that it shames even their fellows.

So, frankly, carry on, carry on. You can stop people from thinking in school, you can’t stop them from talking outside of it.
