Matthew 5:10-12
10 Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake: 12 Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.

Pax vobiscum,

I found one more link to check out the reaction to this Professor’s rant:

EXCERPT:

A firestorm erupted at Brooklyn College after the views of Timothy Shortell - elected to head the sociology department this month - were revealed in a Daily News story on Monday.

“Christians claim that theirs is faith based on love, but they’ll just as soon kill you,” Shortell wrote in an online journal that is linked to his Web site (www.shortell.org).

Brooklyn College officials responded yesterday by launching an investigation into the controversial professor’s views. “I sharply disagree with the offensive anti-religion opinions of Prof. Timothy Shortell,” Brooklyn College President Christoph Kimmich wrote in a letter to The News.

Is being anti-religion a flat out requirement for a teaching position now? Or are they more subtle? Is there some secret handshake they give each other to get tenure?

Academics were much more subtle in the 70s while preaching attacks against religion. Then they pretended one thousand years of Western Civilization barely existed.

Today it is much worse. Social ‘sciences’ have almost crashed because the monkeys have taken control.

From the discussion that was on the O’Reilly Factor, it is only Christianity that this teacher is against.

Hmmmm…usually they are more discrete. They pretend to be against religion in general.

Dr. Timothy Shortell was recently elected by his colleagues to head Brooklyn College’s Sociology Department. The move has angered various individuals and student groups on campus, given remarks the outspoken instructor has made about people of faith. In one online academic publication, he declared, “Christians claim that theirs is a faith based on love, but they’ll just as soon kill you.” Other disparaging remarks attributed to the professor include his alleged references to religious people as “an ugly, violent lot” and “moral retards.”

Kevin Oro-Hahn, director of the college’s InterVarsity Christian Fellowship (IVCF), feels the tone Shortell set in his article is cause for concern about how he teaches in class. “Liberal education was founded for open and honest dialogue by different voices in pursuit of truth,” Oro-Hahn notes. However, he says Dr. Shortell’s appointment is “one example of how illiberal higher education has become.”

The IVCF official says on many American college campuses today, “There’s kind of an established orthodoxy which can’t be opposed by anyone else.”

The problem with the secular and anti religious world is that they eventualy find out they were wrong, unfortunately for them it’s usually when they are knhocking on the pearly gates!!!

Based on my experience, the pro-anything but Christianity is not an atypical attitude. Sadly, to say, it manifested itself in persons whose professorships were a direct result of Christianity.

I was insulted by one of these types, the “enlightened ones” I call them. Stood my ground in class. Made notes, with quotes, of our exchanges. Then, went to the head of the department, a couple deans, and the president of the college.

Two points I made: 1) my notes made it clear there was no respect by this professor. Simply, I wouldn’t tolerate it any longer. And, 2) my academic record
demonstrated that if I flunked his course there would be an investigation into the matter.

In the days ahead, he tempered his statments. And, I did, indeed, pass the course. Students are not to be intellectualy assualted by their professors!

You were right to stand your ground. Do you think anyone else agreed with you? Just curious. Or when you were out of the class, did this professor go about the business of being an intimidating jerk again?

What I did was done in private; that is, it was not shared with other classmates. For the duration of the semester, there did seem to be a degree of change in the professor’s demeanor. It seemed a few students noticed this and began to ask more questions. There was more flow to discussions and no “that’s the dumbest thing I heard in my life” from the professor.

One of the deans acknowledged that there was a “folder” concerning past incidents. Whether future classes experienced “business as usual,” I don’t know. Maybe, it was a “teaching moment” for us all.

This incident just made the news on Hannity tonight. Nothing seems to have been done yet to discipline this professor.
