Here is another university that I won’t send my kids to. Here is their definition of racist:

“A RACIST: A racist is one who is both privileged and socialized on the basis of race by a white supremacist (racist) system. ‘The term applies to all white people (i.e., people of European descent) living in the United States, regardless of class, gender, religion, culture or sexuality. By this definition, people of color cannot be racists, because as peoples within the U.S. system, they do not have the power to back up their prejudices, hostilities, or acts of discrimination….’”

Its pretty easy to tell the author of this definition has a political agenda.

Or that the author has some type of mental dysfunctionality in the area of logic.

Another example of how the “public educational system” must be scuttled.

I was continually “taught” that same nonsense from 1970-1974 by tenured faculty at an Ivy League university.

I work in a university and I know plenty of people who believe this.
The same people who believe this, laugh at the concept of orginal sin and scoff at the idea that all men are capable of hatred and evil. According to them, it’s all Society’s fault - you are only a pawn in the hands of The Man.

I am just wonder if these types of program help or hurt. It seems that when you are told you are racist by the color of your skin, you can be fostering resentment in some of these same people.

wow…generalization to the max…

and I agree with this student:
“That is none of your damn business”
. When is it a University’s business to pry into a student’s personal life? Isn’t that going against some part of the Constitution (I don’t know much about politics or US constitution 🤷 )? Universities are there to support the student’s education, not his personal life.

I truly believe the programs hurt minorities. Instead of encouraging them to excel, these programs create victims…basically giving them an excuse to fail.

Also, The definition is false. (2) examples:
  1. did the african-american who threw the brick at Reginald Denny’s head (during the LA riots) because he was a white man, do so out of racism? According to the school’s definition, no. I think fair minded people would think it was racism.
  2. Did the U of Michigan law school discriminate by adjusting the entrance requirments based on race (which had lower standards for minorities)? The Supreme Court thought so.
A definition like that is a set up to a demand for reparations or some other form of special consideration.

My point is this: You can find racists of every color.

One last question with the school’s definition in mind: If a child has one black parent and one white parent, is the child 50% racist?

I suppose that too would apply too to many people of color who take advantage of the system too. Perhaps too the U of Del. is also a racist instituation too. On the other hand, if this is brought about by ‘people of color’ who can establish their own prejudices and bring penalties for not complying, then maybe they can be racist too. Who are the people who give this idea a privilaged estabishment on the campus?

Aren’t Hispanics of European (Spanish) descent?
I dare you to tell a Spaniard he isn’t white – I double dare ya.

Interesting that they say “regardless of class”. I actually think class rules in America far more than race but of course since we don’t even admit that there are classes in the US it never even gets discussed.

I agree with you absolutely, didymus. Money rules in this country. Actually, I would generally say that money is the greatest force of the secular world. It doesn’t matter what race you are, if you have enough money then you are going to get your way a lot more.

That is not to say that wealth is intrinsically evil. We need money to make things work. The problem is really greed and the lust for power. Money is essentially power. That is why economic freedom is the gateway to other freedoms.

Yes, this is very true. Many also feel extreme disillusionment because they believed that man alone could fix the world and yet reliance on man alone continues to fail. There is no answer for why this happens in the sociological view or larger academic view, unless one accepts that human nature has been corrupted by original sin. Evolution just doesn’t cut it & capitalism cannot be blamed for all histories failings (contrary to what many academics may claim).

As for the OP: the definition offered by the univeristy is a very broad and badly implemented. It is an extreme oversimplification of the very complex relationship that race and ethnicity play in our socio-economic status.

I thought this was satirical! It is outrageous enough that it could go on The Onion.

Side note: Spaniards are European. Hispanics vary from mostly Spanish-descent, mostly Native American descent, or somewhere in the middle. My dad’s family is probably closer to the Native American side (Mexican) as they look more Native than European. I look more European, but that’s because I look like my mother, who is entirely of Northwestern European descent.

Topic: “only whites can be racist”, that’s ridiculous. Racism goes both ways. I’m a student at a university which is rather famous for its affirmative action practices. As a half-Hispanic, I was invited to join the Association of Multicultural Scientists (read: all cultures except whites). I attended one gathering, had 4 people get in my face and ask me in a rather unfriendly manner “So- what are you?”, and knew immediately that it was not for me. I have some friends who belong to the organization, they’re terrific people, but I don’t feel welcome in the organization. My friends know that I am on the org’s mailing list but have never asked me why I don’t participate. I’m not sure what I would say if asked, because this is such an inflammatory topic.

This is an utter outrage. Why have I not heard this on the news? Ugh.

I was. 🙂 Rhetorical questions and sarcasm don’t come across well on the Internet, huh? lol
That is why I always use a  or similar when I am being sarcastic (except for 1 forum where I am almost 100% sarcastic 🤷 )
