I went to confession for a mortal sin I committed yesterday. Instead of going over the list of sins I had prepared for confession, I instead asked the priest for his advice on the mortal sin I had committed, because it keeps me going to confession weekly. He went on for a long time with his advice, and by the end of it, kinda rushed to say my sins were forgiven because Mass was just about to start. But after I left the confessional, I remembered that I never said I committed the mortal sin twice… And I know that you must say the number of mortal sins you’ve committed “to the best of your recollection.” I didn’t intentionally forget about it though… I even tried to stick around after mass so I could ask him about it, but he disappeared on me. My memory was also fuzzy, I don’t know if I told him or not anymore.

Should I just go to confession to tomorrow to get this straightened out?

You did not mean to omit the number, and the priest did take time to give advice and then ran out of time, so he kind of threw you off the scent that way and it was reasonable to accidentally omit the number in that situation. So I’d say you’re covered.

At least this Internet person thinks so. If you can’t let go of it, you might ask him next time you see him because it’s about whether you believe you are ok.

Yeah, I think I’ll just head back to confession. Why risk my eternal soul, ya know?

You’re fine (and probably suffering from scrupulousness). Forgetting the number does not invalidate the Sacrament. Heck, even forgetting a sin doesn’t invalidate absolution - as long as you didn’t intend to omit it. The only issue would be if you intentionally failed to mention the number of times, then I’d say go back for a redo.

Like other people have said, you are fine if you omitted by accident. If you followed traditional format, you’ll have said “…for these and all my sins I am truly sorry.” I’ve always interpreted “and all my sins” to be reference to misdeeds I don’t remember in that moment.

This is straight from the Catechism:
*
When Christ’s faithful strive to confess all the sins that they can remember, they undoubtedly place all of them before the divine mercy for pardon. But those who fail to do so and knowingly withhold some, place nothing before the divine goodness for remission through the mediation of the priest, “for if the sick person is too ashamed to show his wound to the doctor, the medicine cannot heal what it does not know.”*

(I’m not sure how to cite the Catechism, but I found this in chapter two, section VII, paragraph 1456.)

So, you’re only in trouble if you “knowingly withold some” sins. If you honestly forgot, that forgotten sin is forgiven like the rest. If you knowingly withheld, you should head back to the Confessional.

Here is “the deal”

IF you intended to confess when you went in
be assured:the Priest DID intend to forgive you ALL of your Mortal sins.

So they are forgiven!👍

To ease your mind mention it the next time you get to confession and take the advice Father shared seriously.🙂

God Bless you,
Partick

You don’t have to go back to confession. All your sins were forgiven, even those you accidentally forgot. In fact, it’s better if you don’t go. It can lead to a lot of second-guessing and unnecessary worrying, which isn’t a good thing.

The priest said “ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis” so you’re forgiven. You did not intend to hide anything. I commit so many sins I can’t even recall the number! Pray for me, please.
