My prayers are with you as you set up an appointment with your priest. I have worked for our parish, and I know that most priests are happy to try to help. They didn’t become priests just to worry about parish finances! I know it will take a lot of courage on your part to make the appointment, that’s just human nature for all of us when we are in distress. You have given your husband so many chances that if I were you, I would call an attorney before I went to see a consellor. If you have no money, try Legal Aid. If you find that you need to leave home, you will need advice as to acess to jointly held bank accounts etc. Taking to a lawyer doesn’t automatically mean that you are filing for divorce. However, you do need to know what your rights are.

So here is what happened last night

I did throw it right on the table and just kept asking why. I told him how I felt, again. He didn’t do his normal excuses but still blamed his job. Back in January when we had another extremely big fight he kept saying he needed help etc…He did the same this time as well. I had sent him help but he ignored it.

Though I feel he is sorry for everything I think some things he said just to try to win my heart like saying let’s just move away and even kept saying he wants a family with me (never mentioned kids though)

I told him I want to believe him, but my faith in him is shattered. I have no trust in him and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen. I really know in my heart that I will be happier with him gone and I really have no faith in him changing because this is exactly how the argument back in January went. I didn’t give in to his tears and even pushed him away when he tried to hug me because I was crying. I just don’t think I can give him this chance and keep him in my life. There’s so much emotional damage.

I don’t think you guys can just have a confrontation every 6 months when you catch him and expect for things to change. You have tried to direct him to resources, but something is holding him back. It sounds like he was more receptive to the conversation this time. It sounds like he is starting to understand that he has a problem. You might have an opening for him to make some progress. If you’ll want to make progress, I suggest praying together every night. Pray for the Grace to avoid temptations to impurity. Pray to grow in love an forgiveness. Talk to him regularly about his stresses and how he is doing. Try to go see a priest together. Encourage him to join a men’s group at your parish. Keep this problem in the light! it festers in the dark.

His mind is clouded by the addiction, by confronting him, you have managed to open a window through the cloud. If he is able to avoid it for a week, he will be less clouded. Two weeks and you will see some real changes in him. A month is a real milestone. 6 months and he can pretty much be back to the man you married. Also realize that he may slip up during a period of recovery, the key is if he is able to pick himself up and continue to recovery and not lose hope and falls back into it.

It is really important early on for him not to be alone at night time. If he is up later than you, invite him to watch tv in the bedroom. Stress, hunger and being alone all make addicts vulnerable to failure. I know that this sounds like a lot of work and that it can keep the hurt fresh in your mind, but these are the types of steps needed to help him break free. Clearly he can’t do it on his own. After being clean for a short while he may be able to take more initiative himself.

I applaud the strength you have shown thus far to confront him. Continued prayers.

I’m sorry you are going through that. I think the ball is in his court to change and try and win you back. And you need to start getting live personal face to face advise from the pros. Start with the priest.

You might get advise something along the lines that perhaps some time apart wouldn’t be a bad thing. That let’s both of you experience life without the other for a while and gives time for you both to figure out how you would live alone if it came to that.

No it’s not every 6 months. Its every month to every other month.
In January was the last time he cried because of it but the last time we has a fight about this was 2 or 3 weeks ago.

He works nights some days till 2am. I’m asleep when he comes home and that’s when he does it or when I am at work and he doesn’t work until later in the evening. I have no way of trusting him.

I just don’t think that I am strong enough for him to hurt me again and as bad as this sounds I know that he will try for a bit then go back to the way he was before. I honestly can’t see a future without me getting hurt.
I will talk to my boss and see if there’s any way I can take time off but it’s a busy season for my job now and I don’t know if they would understand.

It comes down to I cannot live with this pain and I cannot live with someone who has lied to me this much every single month. I forgive him of course but I cannot forget. I called a priest and left a message. I just don’t think I can do this any more.

I have no way of trusting him…
As long as he is neck deep in the addiction, he can make promises, but is unlikely to be able to fulfill them. You are right you can’t trust him. Trust is not really the way to look at it at this point. He is an addict, he doesn’t do it to hurt you or break your trust. He does it because of the addiction. It doesn’t matter what he says in a moment of soberness, because when the addiction comes, he is a different person. The addictive cycle must be broken before trust can be rebuilt. If you are to stay in this marriage a concrete plan must be agree upon and followed by him. He needs help and accountability. He needs to proactively combat the addiction everyday. A passive approach such as “committing not to do this or that” will fail every time.

Seeing a priest is a great step. Keep that appointment!

I don’t think that I am capable of staying though that sounds bad. I just feel like I’m drowning. He says he wants help. He has said that before. No change has happened when I sent him that help

You need to set boundaries. Not just telling him what to do. Boundaries have consequences. You need to be able to say “I need you to do X and if you don’t do X I will do Y.” And follow through. I’ll let those more knowledgeable than me say what those are…but the point is if you keep having arguments and then he doesn’t have any consequences afterwards, what he’ll learn is that he just has to say whatever it takes to make the argument end and then go right back to doing what he was doing.

Believe it or not, you are in a much better situation than you could be in. You don’t have kids. That means that there is no collateral damage here if you take dramatic steps.

And you should take dramatic steps. Right now, you’re like another kid on the playground who says, “If you take another step, I’ll punch you!” But then the first kid takes another step, and you say, “But OK, if you take one more step, I’ll punch you!” And so on.

Actions are the only thing that can speak to this man. If I were you, I would be tempted to set up all the computers/screens in the house to erotica before he comes home one day, and then when he comes in, I would walk out for good, and say, “Here, I’ll leave you alone with the love of your life, and stop bothering you.”

He wants you to share him with his obsession. I know what that’s like, because I’ve wanted my wife to share me with my own obsession – which isn’t exactly porn, but is related. But it would be completely unfair to my wife to ask that of her, and not only because my obsession involves sin. I promised to be *true *to her.

Here is the only language he speaks that you can listen to: his repentance. I don’t mean words like “I’m sorry” or “it’ll never happen again.” I mean words like, “Here is my plan to break free” or “I’m going to see a counselor” or “I want you to help me lock the internet off my phone”. Those words mean something. Everything else – not really.

Your days as good cop, bad cop, need to be over. You need to be humble, and realize that you have sinned in various ways during this process. But you can apologize to Jesus, not your husband – certainly not your husband when he’s like this. What your husband needs is a firm rejection. It is your duty to love him, not to trust him. Right now, he needs to be spoken to in the language of no.

God bless you!

He does want me to share. Even during our honeymoon he kept wanting to watch it with me.

Right now I honestly think he would say anything, hence saying he would move out of the state etc but honestly He is doing it because he knows he’s gonna lose me. I told him that he should have realized how I meant to him before it got this far

Work has a lot to do with it but it’s also just his life. He still compares me to his ex even after 6 years (ex girlfriend)

I still have not heard back from the priest yet. If I don’t hear back I’ll talk to the priest at my old church.

I have prayed about this a lot and thought about what to do. I feel that me leaving will be the best thing. He’s the type of guy that needs a big kick in the pants to change. Leaving is going to be that big kick in the pants. I am going to tell him I am separating for a week and going back to my parents.
I just cannot stay in this relationship. He lied to me dozens of times and for some reason only now figured out how much it hurt me? I think he just figured out that I meant business when I said he couldn’t get another chance. I will always pray for him and if we separate before our lease is up I will send him money to help pay for the rest until he can find something cheaper.

That’s a dramatic exit. If this doesn’t affect him, then nothing will. I agree though, it seems like you’re just torturing yourself by staying with him. In order to preserve your sanity, you need to get out of this relationship. The porn addiction is bad, but the abuse is much worse.

This is a massive heartbreak and blow to you emotionally, but I’m sure time the great healer and prayer will help you to move on. All the best. I think it’s time for you to stop worrying about him (he’s a grown man and you’ve done enough) and focus on yourself a bit more.

Thank you kb360. I need to focus on myself and I do realize that this is a huge blow emotionally. I cannot emotionally take more without fear of greater damage. I’ve never once been depressed in my life but I feel so depressed.

As hard as it is, I think getting away from him is going to be what is best emotionally for me. I wish it never got to this point but I really cannot live like this. I know he supposedly says he wants to change but he’s said that before but never acted on it. He won’t talk to anyone about it…he doesn’t even like talking to me about it.

Our anniversary coming up is making things hard as well…and my parents won’t respect that I don’t want to be constantly asked about him.
