Updated - How have you been hit by the economy? Have you lost your job or had your pay reduced?

Please take the poll - I think it will be interesting to see how CAF has been hit by the economy.

There is no option for “sole breadwinner has lost their job”. We are a family with a child, three of us. I have been the breadwinner while DH was a SAHD for 10 years. I lost my job a year ago. Have found a small part time job, DH has found nothing.
 
I didn’t vote since DH and I have been very blessed that our jobs haven’t been affected by the economy. DH is a teacher and I am an engineer, so our jobs are pretty essential to the community. However, I will be quitting my job once our baby comes in the summer and the shakiness of the economy has affected our investments a little…

That’s what I thought when I went to work one morning (I worked in a hospital as a Maternity tech for 28+ yrs) and the boss said “I am sorry. But you no longer have a job”. In this economy, no job is “secure”.

How horrible! After 28 years??? :eek:

I should clarify–I didn’t mean to imply that our jobs are more essential than someone else’s or that we consider ourselves 100% safe–just that both areas that we work are experiencing growth in our community and as we both have seniority over several other people, we have been blessed to not have to worry as much as some of my friends and family have.
 
Had benefits cut…salary stays the same. Although a lot of my coworkers were fired, God help em.
 
Senority and growth don’t even matter. It can happen any moment.
 
DH left his job for a better job around July of last year just after our baby was born. Thank goodness he did because everyone on his old team has been laid off. Of course his current job isn’t super safe either. We are scared…

I am on maternity leave right now so I have no clue how my workplace is doing in the recession. I am in touch with coworkers and so far everything is fine. I work for the government. Generally that is a safe place to be, but as you all say, no job is truly safe.

On the upside, because of the recession, we aren’t buying frivolous things… when the economy was hot ( gosh that was only what… 6 months ago? ) we were trying to keep up with Jones’s.
 
Lizaanne, your poll should have been multiple choice. It seems your last 2 choices are ancillary to all the other options, as it seems you may have wanted a response to one of the first 4 options and then clarification on how large the family is. No matter, there was no option for someone in my situation to select, anyway.

As for my situation: I am a single woman with no children, and my pay has increased. I don’t know how it actually got passed by the school board, since they are looking at several “cost-cutting” options, but the employees in my job classification have actually received a reclassification and pay upgrade. It is nothing short of miraculous in this very tough economy (we are especially hard-hit here in South Florida), and it is something for which I am extremely grateful!

Oh, you’re absolutely right. But as a pregnant mommy, I’m trying not to worry more than I have too. 🙂

Like Sina posted, we’ve been much tighter with our money lately and are saving much more than we had been. 👍
 
My husband’s job is stable - no pay reduction.
My job is stable, but we were forced to take 2 weeks off (use our PTO) in Q1. I counted that as a “reduction in pay”…

My husband took a pay cut, and others at his work were laid off.

I am a stay at home, home schooling Mom with a very small part time job at our church.

We have been able to make adjustments to our life style to make up for the lost pay. But I don’t know what we will do if we have to take a bigger hit. We have done it before, and it isn’t pretty.
 
DH and I both have not had a reduction in pay or benefits. So far we have been very lucky and blessed. We are paying off our debt like mad before our baby arrives. If we keep paying down at the rate we are, by the time baby comes we will only have a mortgage for debt. Both cars will be paid off and no credit card debt. Oh happy day! 😃

My DH lost his job and has had to come to terms with the fact that he needs to find a new one at lower pay now. I’m on gov’t mat leave but only until the end of April. So we’re kind of in panic mode right now. DH is planning now on going back to school in January. I intend to find a part time job when I go back to work. We can’t afford daycare and there’s a 2 year waitlist for subsidized but the good news is that we can arrange my work around DH’s school hours/ work hours so we can avoid living entirely off of student loans. I’m just not sure what we’ll do until DH goes to school in January. He is looking for a job right now but the only kind available are low paying and daycare for a month costs more than either of us would make in the month. So I’m going to be working part time around his hours but it’s unlikely we’ll be able to make ends meet anyways. We’re on a priority waitlist for subsidized housing but that’s still 6 months long. We may have to move in with my Dad in the interim and he’s not really all that thrilled about it (and neither is DH- they’ve clashed some in the past). It’s nerve wracking. I’m just praying that somehow things will improve for us soon.
 
My husband lost his job last year. A long time friend of ours offered him a job at the company he works for, the only position they had available. Its a completely different line of work and a much lower paying position but it’s a job with good health insurance which is crucial in my case. I work part time as I always have but our company is suffering too. The managers are a having a raise freeze this year, and we a noticeably less stocked with merchandise. Makes me a bit nervous.

And the company my husband works now for had some layoffs last Friday. Luckily no one else does my husbands job except him but that’s still no guarantee. We’re in Michigan, and its very scary around here. None of the guys my hubby was laid off with at his previous company have found work.😦
 
Lost job in a law firm. Teaching legal English (I’m in Europe) and doing legal translations for people. Better rate, much less time, less money, less work. Can focus on private matters and academics. Need a paying job, however, because academics costs money.
 
I don’t see an option for both of us are unemployed. That is our case. 😦
 
Several coworkers of mine have been laid off or had their pay reduced. Mine has increased, and I’m working flat-out. I’m making more money this month than I’ve ever made in a month before. Unfortunately, my contract ends in July and for personal reasons I’m not renewing it - the love of my life lives elsewhere, and I can’t take another year here while he’s not. I love this job, and I wish I could keep it, but I really need to be closer to the man I love. I’m employable and hardworking, so I’m trusting that I’ll be able to find another job somewhere else.
