URGENT: LifeSite is under attack

The Editors

October 27, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – This is extremely urgent. I need to inform you that LifeSite just received an email at 8:30 p.m. EST from our web-hosting company alerting us that they will be taking our website down within 12 hours, if not sooner!

They wrote: “we are implementing our ‘SUSPENSION OF SERVICES’ clause…and giving you 12 hours notice to move your web site operations off of our servers…"

We received absolutely no forewarning whatsoever about this decision.

The company is acting after a months-long campaign of preposterous complaints against us by Adam Flanders. Flanders is a convicted sex abuser and homosexual activist who is angered over our reports exposing him and his past. As LifeSite recently reported, he has already succeeded in taking down other pro-family websites by targeting their server companies.

Flanders’ latest complaint is focused on the absurd allegation that LifeSite “has been implicated in a violent hate crime against a gay man . . .

. . . We also urge you to pray this issue is resolved quickly and smoothly.

Praying for these folks.

Corporate America is pretty successful at silencing opinions that go against the liberal orthodoxy. It is the biggest problem we face.

So much so at one time CAF moderators warned against using the site to begin a topic. I was one of those warned.

More like a lot of corporations are completely spineless when lawsuits and boycotts are threatened. In this case, the guy is claiming his mugshot is copyrighted material. Even large companies like Intel and Google have buckled under such pressure, and they hardly have an ideological consistency.

With that said, it’s certainly been known that going after web hosts as a way of silencing sites is a tactic. Last year, a lot of stuff was written about going after those hosting white nationalist sites. This guy is basically following the same tactic but for more personal reasons it seems. Given his website, it appears that he might do freelance, and I doubt that he wants his criminal history or mugshot easily found through a simple Google search of his name.

If the guy his making the claim that is ridiculous. A mugshot is a government work and therefore automatically public domain. If the host is shutting them down for this reason then they could themselves sue.

Yes I remember when it was not considered a legitimate news source for the forums.

(Daily Kos wasn’t either)

I went to lifesitenews earlier, when it didn’t come up, I went to bing.com and put in lifesitenews and was able to get it… maybe the first time, I didn’t type it in correctly. I think it’s a decent website. When your directly over target, that’s when you get the flak. I would think, yes, they have probably had some inaccuracies before. So, has CBS, NY Times and basically, every journalistic outfit. Welcome to the real world.

If you used the link from the OP a difference is that if you load the site without the ‘www’ then you’ll get an error.

https://lifesitenews.com/ ← doesn’t load
https://www.lifesitenews.com/ ← loads

I don’t know how they have their sub-domains setup. So I can’t say why their page is acting that way.

Yeah, if that is the reason, it’s absolutely ridiculous, but like I said, some companies are completely spineless when it comes to this stuff. Once you start throwing around threats of lawsuits, they fold, especially since the people handling this probably aren’t lawyers. In some cases, it’s a bot.

This also isn’t the most bizarre I’ve heard of. Let’s just say, YouTube is a cesspool for this kind of stuff, in large part due to them automating much of the process and doing so horribly, and last year they had a case that was outlandish even by their standards.
A mugshot is a government work and therefore automatically public domain.
A minor correction: Mugshots from the federal government are automatically put in the public domain. State and local governments may work differently, and his mugshot is specifically from Knox County, Maine. It might not be public domain, but he absolutely has no right to the copyright if it isn’t.
Lifesite crashing and burning? Meh. Ok.
I’m not a fan of LifeSite, but this tactic of going after web hosts is concerning.

Away with the garbage “news” lifesite

So other server will pick them up sadly

If a site is in violation of the hosting company’s terms of service (and I don’t know if this is the situation in this case), then yes, the hosting company can give them the boot.

According to whois, LifeSite is hosted by Cloudflare. Cloudflare doesn’t seem to have a lot of terms, but I did find this page, which says that they do have a process for copyright infringement, which LifeSite claims is Adam Flanders’s avenue of choice, and that they can remove content with or without notice as they see fit.

And while I do agree that companies can host whatever they desire and that the ability to use their service over self-hosting is a business agreement, I’m also concerned that tactics similar to those employed by people on YouTube, such as frivolous copyright claims, and Twitter, such as the “Twitter mob”, may bleed into the rest of the Internet.

Update, 11:55 a.m. EST: Our web developer was up all night implementing temporary measures to keep our site online even if our current web-hosting company followed through on its threat to shut down our services. We are extremely grateful for his hard work on a Saturday night. However, this is only a temporary solution. We are currently looking for a web-hosting company that will not cave to threats of this kind. We are also exploring legal options to combat Adam Flanders’ campaign of harassment as well as our web-hosting company’s extraordinary decision to give us 12 hours to move our site late on a Saturday evening. We will keep our readers posted.

Lifesite is a courageous website where you’ll learn things you won’t hear anywhere else.
