Urgent Prayer Request - Katrina

I am truly humbled by the rosaries and chaplets said for us. As I write this, the skies are darkening although the sun is still shining and the winds are only about 20 mph. Our animals know something is up. The geese are very quiet, the guinea has not uttered a cry, and the chickens are mostly in the barn although it is broad daylight. The cats have turned “lovey-dovey” and want to sit in your lap. Our dogs are underfoot.

New Orleans is known as “the City” throughout south Louisiana. I am a native New Orleanian. My wife is not. She remarked that even though she knows we’ll be OK up here in Baton Rouge, everyone in south Louisiana has their own version of going to “the City”. She is nervous for “the City” and wants to cry. New Orleans looms large in all of our lives. And, contrary to popular belief, the raunchy stuff is for tourists. It doesn’t even come close to the respect and love we have for that City. The Archdiocese of New Orleans is the Mother Church for all of Louisiana. We are very Catholic in South Louisiana - even those of us who have to live in Jimmy Swaggert land.

Sorry folks, if I’m babbling. I have been jumping between the computer and the TV. I deeply love that city and know what is coming down on her.

I would like to ask everyone to please keep me, my family, and all residents of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama in your prayers…unfortuneatly, Katrina has found very warm waters in the gulf and strengthened to a CAT 5 Hurricane and landfal is expected within the next 24-36 hours…Katrina is heading almost to the same exact spot that Camille (1969) hit…and it is nearly as strong…and will probably strengthen further before landfall. We are in a state of emergency here…it is crazy. Let us pray for the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. God Bless you all…if we lose power, it may be a while before I see you all online…

Vivat Jesus,
Sonny
Praying hard for all those in the storms path. Make sure you get into a safe place and let us know how you are when this is over.

It’s so bad that they have evacuated the news stations from NO. They are simulcasting from Baton Rouge to the NO station with both sets of anchors, reporters, and weathermen.

NO is under a curfew as of 6:00,

The Rochester NY station here just broadcast that there are flights of relief workers headed out to Baton Rouge to coordinate the relief efforts.
I hope & pray that this may mean that Baton Rouge is safe, & I would also ask that we be praying for these people who are flying into the face of danger…One guy said, he isn’t coming back north for a while, he is going to shuttle back & forth as needed in the south throughout the season… Wow!! Big wow!!!

OK 6:20 and the first band of showers just hit - I’m 20 miles due east of downtown Baton Rouge. I’ve already lit the St. Michael candle. We’re finishing up last minute details like getting clothes and dishes washed.

I didn’t shut my computer off when I left for evening Vespers at church.

I lit another candle for NO and the Gulf area.
I keep the streamlink on and still listening to Baton Rouge.

One of our Byzantine Catholic Churches is in NO…St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Parish. The building is 200 years old. Father said that IF the building is STILL staning after this, it will be a miracle.
Brotherrolf, do you know where this church is and what it looks like?

New Katrina’s update: 8PM EST

WInds down to 160 MPH.
Location 27.2 N 89.1 W
130 South of the Mississippi River traveling NWN at 11 MPH

STILL a category 5 hurricane

Just wanted to let you all who are in the path of Katrina know that many people are praying for you. I was at Mass this evening and wanted to light a candle for you all, but I couldn’t because every last one of them was already lit! Well, except for the few votives that had burned out.(not a usual circumstance). Since I couldn’t light one, I knelt and united my prayers with a candle whose intention was for those in the path of the storm.

You were also remembered in the Prayers of the Faithful during the Mass. We are very concerned for everyone who will be impacted by this storm.

Mobile, Alabama is another city facing possible devestation also, even though not in the direct path of Katrina. Mobile has underground highway tunnels, and they may have to be closed.

Storm surge in Mobile to be felt within a 10 block area.

Even in a storm Our Lord sends us blessings. I had no idea that NO had an Eastern Catholic mission. Wow. From the address it’s got to be around the chancery and the seminary for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Will have to check it out.

It’s still pretty quiet outside although that is deceptive. As you can see we still have power. The biggest strangeness is having the ABC affiliate from NO broadcasting on simulcast from Baton Rouge. I’m getting news from NO (with broadcasters I’ve known as a kid) along with the broadcasters from Baton Rouge. But, then there are so many of us who have moved from New Orleans to Baton Rouge…

Edwin: going back to your post…I don’t think St. Nicholas is all that old. It’s on Carrollton Ave and within blocks of Notre Dame Seminary and the Chancery of the Archdiocese of NO. I’ve always known about Holy Trinity, the eastern Orthodox church now cathedral but was pleasantly shocked to see St. NIcholas.

The traffic coming up from New Orleans is still heavy but it is moving. I hope and pray that those folks get out before the really big squalls hit. The shelters in the BR area are full.

A million and a half people evacuated…

Brother,

Keep us posted as long as you can. I don’t have CNN or the like, and the local stations here only give you a few minutes during regular news times. I am so worried about all of you.

God Bless all of you,
and Our Lady of Prompt Succor, we are praying for a miracle.

brotherrolf,
I do not know why my pastor would say they are in an old building…maybe he was refereing to the chancery building, i’m not sure.

I will be offering everyone of you up in prayer tonight as I say my rosary.

Let me tell you the power of the rosary during hurricanes. I grew up down south, the tip of Texas to be more exact. We were in the path of category V hurricane. And you know that on either side of the border (US/Mexico) you had 1000s upon 1000s saying the rosary (high percentage of Catholics). Well do you know what? That hurricane went right up the river & didn’t hit either country directly. In spite of the rains and winds and property damage, it could have been alot worse; not one death was reported.

So to all on here that have requested prayers and those who I don’t know that also need my prayers, I will offer up a rosary.

God Bless You All

Siena,
I am listening to the radio broadcasts that brotherfrolf are talking about, through the Internet.
I have posted the web site if anyone cares to listen in. I have it posted in several threads.

Edwin,

I tried the link, but can’t listen.
I guess your internet connection is too slow or your media player isn’t able to listen in.
I’ve been posting the updates, and posting them in the Wicked Weather thread in the Water Cooler.

Any updates will be there. I will be staying up as long as I need to.
