I was curious, last time I heard, which was some time ago, other countries were not all that happy with us over the Iraq business and maybe a few other things. Does anyone know if the whole world still hates us? Thanks and God bless.

We have better relations now with Germany (since they changed governments).

France is working with us (or we are working with them) as far as Lebanon and Iran is concerned. France is pretty tied up with internal affairs now though.

Our relationship with the UK government is still strong

Denmark loves us now 🙂

Holland is seeing the light that there really is a war on terrorism and radical Islam is a threat.

Eastern European countries still likes us

Oh yea, everyone, but everyone seems to like our Sec of State 🙂 Reminds me of how Europe reacted to Ben Franklyn

Our relations with a number of South American counties has deteriourated (as have their governments).

Mexico isn’t enamored with Americans right now.

Best relations we have ever had with China, India and Pakistan … not to mention Afghanistan

Much better relations with Canada than a year ago.

I think that Europe never hated America, it’s more the things carried out by the present administration that have been- and continue to be questioned.
Just look at the reaction Condi got on here recent visit here!

I watch and read both English and Spanish news. I’ve noticed that the spanish media covers more on what is going down there in South America. A lot of elections are going on down in the South American countries and these candidates who are in the lead are supporters of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez Anti-American campaign.

Scary stuff when you start to look at the shift of power down there.

Just my 2 cents.

So they could get that former Commie / Marxist lawyer turned Prime Minister out of office and elect a conservative 🙂

European minorities in many countries, especially socialist ones, have been against America and American foreign policy since the 2nd World War. some of these governments are coalitions of many political parties, and some of those parties are against us because we are capitalists, because of the Vietnam war and what they perceive as imperialism, because of our military strength, because of our atomic energy and weapons policies, because of our industry and heavy use of fossil fuels, which among other things damages the environment, contributes to global warming etc. Long before Bush was to blame for all the ills of the world there have been elements in Europe blaming America for everything from dead whales to atomic fallout.

Oh COME ON… there is a very old song by some yank who sung that the whole world hated the USA in the 1970s and that they (USA) should drop the big one and be done with it (except for us Australia cos the yanks love kangaroos)…

The USA appear to be the police of the world, last I checked no-one loves police but go arunning to them when in need, but hate to have to feel grateful about it. Some Americans can be downright offensive at times and last time I checked, I have been told there was an occasion where an Australian managed to offend some one overseas once… a long time ago…😃

This depends on whether or not you are asking about the people or the governments. Generally the Europeans like Americans as individuals, but loathe this administration.

To say that it has to do with the Iraq War or War on Terrorism is a completely American-centric point of view. It started when Bush first took office. One of his first actions was to call Jacques Chirac and Gerhard Schroeder (among other European leaders) to ask them to take Turkey into the European Union. Bush still makes this speech on occasion, as recently as 2004 at Istanbul University in fact. Think about it, if you were the U.S. President, would you want a newly elected leader of France calling you to tell you to accept Puerto Rico as a full U.S. state?

Then the General Electric/Honeywell merger was opposed by Mario Monti (the former EU competition czar) and Bush tried to use connections to meddle in that affair as well.

There are many other examples that took place long before the “Old Europe” comments of Donald Rumsfeld or labelling Spain as “cowards” for electing a Socialist government.

By the way, Europe has fought radical terrorists FAR longer than the United States. France especially has had trouble in this area ever since the days of fighting in Algeria. It is extremely presumptuous to pretend that this is a new problem and that the United States somehow has all the answers on how to handle things.

Also saying a government has “deteriorated” because they elect a Socialist party is equally simplistic. Don’t forget that your ally in the United Kingdom is a member of the Socialist International.

Indeed so.

And Spain, with ETA, and the UK, with the IRA, have had to fight terrorism ‘at home’ for decades.

Yes indeedy 👍

The remark of “Old Europe”, by Cheney, did not help. Remember, 50% of the government is still the same as before. The people have not changed either.

That is the general feeling in Europe. And referring to voting in the Christian Democrats in Germany wouldn’t be proof of otherwise (Otherwise, Spain and Portugal then did the exact opposite), as our elections are not based upon “Did they help that eeeevil America?!”, except in Spain, when the government lied.

But a change in government? No, dilution of government… Coalition with the two main parties, will cause the greatest bureaucracy and hardship for any democratic government. When in Germany, all I heard was badmouthing of the American administration (And I was in Stuttgart, where the largest American military base in Europe resides)
Also saying a government has “deteriorated” because they elect a Socialist party is equally simplistic. Don’t forget that your ally in the United Kingdom is a member of the Socialist International.
It is honestly biased against Socialists. I have said it before, and I’ll say it again, I am anti-Socialist. But I would never say something that makes as little as sense as they have “deteriorated” due to the voting for Socialists. And yes, Britain is being controlled by the Labour party, albeit, they have moved more centrist, and economically open, they are, as you said, part of the Socialist International, and still bear the Socialist trademarks of years past.

Elections in past colonies are important to the former colonial powers, they have vested interests in those countries, and still have links. For example, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth - Oh no! The United Kingdom cares about it’s colonies, therefore they are XYZ.

And again, the UK is run by Labour.
Holland is seeing the light that there really is a war on terrorism and radical Islam is a threat.
Please, do not be ignorant. The Dutch have always had a bad attitude towards Muslim immigrants, you start figthing “extremists”, and suddenly you say “They’re on our side now!”.

Edit: Britain has had to deal with terrorism for well over a hundred years, which grew, adapted and developed over time.

Even thought I have no comment on how the rest of the world sees us, I thought I would add that this is a very interesting thread. Can we really have a group personality? Isn’t that a form of bigotry?

It could be the way that so many US posters here and on other sites simply assume that everyone reading their words is a Yank. At first I didn’t know who Montie meant by “us”, since there’s nothing in his/her profile to indicate his/her nationality.

I think Yanks would be a lot more popular if they only kept in mind that there ARE other people in the world, and that they even read net forums, and that not everyone wants their country to be just like the US; and that while there are many things to admire about the US, there are also many ways it could learn from, rather than teach, other countries.

Just regular elections.
Oh, I though you meant, “Change in Goverment” like a Change in Goverment (like in 1933 kind of change) and not an election. By bad.

I agree, particularly with the addition of the Bolivar Revolution ideology to the equation. Chavez and his growing influence in the Americas is a clear and present danger.

It is a strawman to suggest that only the US claims to have the answers on how to handl things. The US, remember, is a member of the Coalition of the Willing.
