It could be the way that so many US posters here and on other sites simply assume that everyone reading their words is a Yank. At first I didn’t know who Montie meant by “us”, since there’s nothing in his/her profile to indicate his/her nationality.

I think Yanks would be a lot more popular if they only kept in mind that there ARE other people in the world, and that they even read net forums, and that not everyone wants their country to be just like the US; and that while there are many things to admire about the US, there are also many ways it could learn from, rather than teach, other countries.
Is Catholic Answers headquartered in the US? Or not?

Semper Fi:
So they could get that former Commie / Marxist lawyer turned Prime Minister out of office and elect a conservative 🙂
Commie?

Ever since we invaded Iraq when I travel around the world I get treated considerably worse by the local public. It doesn’t seem to be getting any better. The worst seem to be the Italians. About a month ago I was in Cancun and I had several situations where the Italians were expressing their dislike.

Good news though is that last trip to Japan they could care less.

Isn’t Cancun in Mexico?

I believe so, insofar as a website can be said to be “headquartered” anywhere. I don’t see what that has to do with posters on it assuming that everyone who posts on it is a Yank. As far as I can tell it’s equally possible to post to it from almost any country.

Funny thing, I was in Rome for a week last month and never experienced any problems. I think if you get into political discussions anywhere, even on this forum, you can get some heated reactions. All people react differently depending on their personal experiences. So I don’t buy it- that the Italians treat us the worst. I think we need to avoid stereotyping anyone or any country.

What exactly is a “Yank”?

I am assuming “Yankee”. However, when I read that I feel like it is meant to be insulting or inflamatory. Here in the USA, when someone from the south calls us a Yank, it can be said in jest but often it is derrogatory. I do think that when someone from outside the USA uses it, they use it generically as a slur for all Americans from the USA.

Fitz, the use of yank or yankee in Oz is not necessarily an insult, iggernant yep but not insulting.

This is because about the only American history known in this country would be the Bostan Tea Party (mummy did they really throw all the tea in the water…was it hot), and Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind and probably the KKK

the term yank is not derogatory, it’s more a nickname/pet name, much the same way us scots are called jocks or the welsh getting called taffy, you also have have a sports team called the yankees so i can’t see why americans find the term offensive

“Yank” is just slang for “American” in Britain and her ‘daughter’ countries (Australia etc)… I thought everyone knew that…

Yes, I agree with the above two posts. It’s not offensive.

I would guess that it must’ve been derived from the word “Yankee”. It’s like calling us Irish “Paddies”, yet we don’t care.

But hey, if you do find it offensive… I suggest blocking your ears if you ever come to Ireland, it’s used widely in rural areas.

I see you have pointedly omitted the Irish equivalent. Good move. I wouldn’t go there either. Frankly I wouldn’t try justifying jock or taffy either.

The term “kanuk” has all sorts of origins, generally now means “Canadian,” is used widely by Canadians themselves for themselves; we even have a hockey team called the Vancouver Canucks.

But, because the term has been used derisively in some non-Canadian regions, it is of questionable taste for a non-Canadian to use it for a Canadian. At least this is how it has been explained to me.

I am assuming this is the same reasoning behind questioning the use of the term “yank.”

Shoshana:
You mean like calling the french…‘frogs’…
Good example of what I mean. In Kebek and French Canada it is not surprising to see parents buying stuffed toys in the form of frogs for their children and calling themselves “frogs” in play and in jest. Yet, for a non-francophone to use this term for a francophone it is considered a social blunder of the most extreme degree.

I agree with several of the above posters that say the use of “Yank” is just sort of a nick name. However, I am telling you that I would never use it because it is not always considered a good thing to call someone. Can someone from the south in the US please join in and let me know what you think? There are still some feelings that are left over after the Civil War here and I just wouldn’t be using the term.

As far as the team NY Yankee goes, if you are from New York you might like them, but the rest of us…well- we love to complain about them!

If I was travelling in Europe and someone called me a Yankee I would not be offended. Here, I might not like it.

It occurs to me that those non-Americans who use the term “yank” do not introduce a distinction between the North and the South. I believe “yank,” for them, includes all Americans.

This kind of usage is not injurious to Northerners; it is a slight toward Southerners.

I have not noticed a lot of Canadians using the term “yank.”

Well I don’t know about Canada but I know Australia and New Zealand use Yank… I use “Yank” when speaking with Americans all the time, it’s just like you calling me a “Brit”. In no way derogatory WHATSOEVER. It’s practically affectionate; used jokingly between the Yanks and Brits. I don’t know if others may use it derogatorily. For most, it’s not and it’s not like calling the French “frogs”.
