This morning the Holy See announced that Archbishop-designate Dennis Marion Schnurr is the new named Coadjutor Archbishop of Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

Archbishop Daniel Edward Pilarczyk remains the ordinary, but upon his retirement Archbishop-designate Schnurr will automatically succeed him.

Archbishop-designate Schnurr had been serving as Bishop of Duluth, Minnesota.

No immediate replacement was named for Duluth.

What is the opinion on Schnurr? I am a member of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and have not heard anything about this man. I pray that God will protect and guide him in his new role. We pray that he injects some new blood and life into the faithful. It’s always good for God to pinch us now and then to make sure we are awake. 🙂

He has been appointed coadjutor of The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s and will replace Archbishop Pilarczyk when he retires.

I want to know if he is in the mold of former St Louis Bishop Burke or of the mold of the San Fransisco Bishop.

I know that his area has been producing increasing numbers of seminary students and he canceled an invitation to Sr. Prejean to speak at a Duluth diocesan education dinner.Sr Prejean is an active Obama supporter and recently been a signatory to an anti-Bush ad (“Drive Out the Bush Regime!”) which endorsed abortion.

I live in Cincinnati and would dearly love a bishop like Bishop Burke or Bishop Chaput or Bishop Bruskowitz. Please Lord bless us with such a leader.

I agree that Cincinnati needs some new life…the fire of the Holy Spirit is really needed here. It feels lukewarm right now.

I’m hopeful that he will be a good shepherd for this Diocese. I wish we knew more about him.

I was hoping we had some good Catholics from his area that could tell us something more about the bishop. I agree that we need a strong orthodox bishop.

I don’t know too much about Bp Schnurr personally, but I do know that vocations have begun blossoming in his diocese, with some young, orthodox priests active in the vocations office.

I’m afraid I haven’t met him - and his old diocese is just far enough away that I really haven’t heard much.

Obviously the other bishops trust him as he serves as the treasurer of the USCCB.

I found this information at a local link:

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s new coadjutor is Dennis Marion Schnurr, bishop since 2001 of Duluth, Minn. As coadjutor, Archbishop Pilarczyk remains the ordinary, but upon his retirement Archbishop-designate Schnurr will automatically succeed him. Here is the announcement in Italian. Bishop Schnurr turned 60 last June, has a degree in canon law, served both the apostolic nunciature and bishops conference, and was executive director of World Youth Day in Denver in 1993 (which earned him the title of Monsignor.) The Diocese of Duluth’s website includes his remarks upon Pope Benedict’s election and a reflection entitled “Devotion to Mary leads to Jesus.” The USCCB released a brief biography of Schnurr when he was made bishop of Duluth. He was in the news in 2006 when he canceled an appearance by Sr. Helen Prejean due to an anti-Bush newspaper ad. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote a profile of him when his name was mentioned as possible successor to Bishop Wuerl:

BISHOP DENNIS M. SCHNURR, 58, of the Diocese of Duluth, Minn., organized the 1993 World Youth Day in Denver with the late Pope John Paul II. The event marked a positive turning point in the pope’s relationship with U.S. Catholics and in young Catholics’ relationship to the church.

A canon lawyer and native of Sheldon, Iowa, Bishop Schnurr studied in Rome and was ordained for the Diocese of Sioux City. He spent three years in parish ministry, then worked for the pope’s nuncio to the United States from 1985 to 1989. In 1989, he was hired by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to oversee its peace and social justice projects. He was the bishops’ general secretary from 1995 until 2001, with a staff of 350 and a budget of $50 million.

He went to Duluth in 2001. He’s a good communicator, and vocations to the priesthood have increased, in part due to an innovative youth ministry. He kept up his social justice work and was the keynote speaker when Minnesota religious leaders went to the state capital to lobby for programs to help the poor.

He is treasurer of the U.S. Bishops Conference, a difficult job during a time of deficit and downsizing.

Bottom line: Exceptionally competent, he would be a boon to youth ministry here, but his duties with the bishops conference are so demanding that its president might plead to keep him in Duluth for now so that he has time for conference work.

And here’s Rocco’s post, which mentions his success in promoting priestly vocations:

Long touted for various openings beyond his current see of 65,000, Schnurr was said to have especially run high on the shortlist for last year’s appointment to Pittsburgh. On a related “high” note, Duluth’s contingent of seminarians – 23, as of the last reported figures – is especially impressive given the diocese’s relatively small size; by comparison, with seven times the Catholic population, Cincinnati’s count shows that the archdiocese currently has 29 men in formation.

I hope as a cannon lawyer he knows what to do with pro abortion politicians. Now it will be interesting to see if those that hated the archbishop will return to the flock or where they just making an excuse.

I may be biased, but for each of you wondering – I think you’re gonna love your latest episcopal appointee. Administrative activities are amongst his strong points (look at the resume all over the internet), but you will find him very personable, approachable, genuine, humble, and very seminarian friendly.

Hello,

I am from Duluth and I assure you it is a sad day in Duluth. Cincinnati you are being blessed with a holy man of Christ who has been directed by the Holy Spirit. In just five years he has transformed our culture to a culture of faithfulness. The increase of vocations is just a testimony to the true spirit of faith that exist here. He works best behind the scenes as he is a shy and humble man with a fabulous vision of the life of Christ in modern times. In five short years he has redirected our Catholic Schools, breathed life into our youth ministry programs, and encouraged faithful young and adult education programs which are flourshing throughout the dioceses. We have an awesome newspaper that brings both local and worldly Catholic News into our homes. We have seen an increase in converts and they are willfulling supporting his vision. He embraces a prospective which seeks the face of Christ by seekig the face of our Catholic faith. He defends the truth and respectfully challenges heritics. When our local “Catholic College” crosses the line he is willing to appropriately call the College on its actions and protect those that attempt to be faithful to Church teachings.

We are not surprised he will be leaving us, as he has tremendous gifts that are calling him to assist the Holy Spirit to transform areas where he is needed most. Do not expect loud proclamation as that is not his style. He will collect the wisest and most faithful people and surround himself with them. He will spread the message of Christ much like Christ did in a sincere and selfless way. To my brothers and Sisters of faith in Cincinnati, this is the beginning of great things for you Dioceses. Please pray that he may continue his good works there as he had done here. We ask you to pray for us so that we may have a successor with gifts which continue to bring us in relationship with our Heavenly Father. God Bless, Faith:thumbsup:

Thank You Faith and Tommy. I hope you get a great Bishp, Faith. I hope others will add their impressions.

OK, I’m trying not to be selfish here…Bishop Schnurr just last weekend rededicated our newly built and newly remodeled school and community spaces at our parish here in Northern Minnesota…You can’t have him, he’s ours:crying: …alright selfish immature fit complete…

As Faith has stated you have a truly Holy man coming to your diocese. He is supportive and kind, and tough and loyal, and a heck of a gardener!! Here is a link to our diocean newspaper, you can read some of his columns there

You are blessed! (You can’t have him he’s ours:crying: ) there I go again.

To all the faithful in Duluth who have gladdened our hearts with your encouraging words…THANK YOU. And we in Cincinnati will take good care of him. We really need him here so do not be to jealous 😃

To all the faithful in Duluth,

The Cincinnati/Dayton area is in dire need for revival, the universities need much help. Thank you for sharing him, and pray for us.🙂

I don’t live in Cincinnati, but some of my wife’s relatives do. I always hated going to Mass there when we visited. Innovative and irreverent, with the priest relegated to the background while what seemed like armies of “ministers” dominated the “stage”. I just hated it.

I learned, though a friend of my son’s that SSPV is BIG in Cincinnati. It’s a shame so many got misled by that schismatic group, but it didn’t surprise me very much.

I would say Cincinnati is in dire need of a truly spiritual leader, and I hope this bishop fills the bill.

then Cincinnati is in for a BIG change, He is a true spiritual leader.

Actually, the closest church to me is a SSPV. I do attend Novus Ordo masses but I prefer the Tridentine Mass so I go to Sacred Heart in the Camp Washington area at 11:30. They have priests come in from The Priestly Society of St. Peter which was founded by SSPX priests that wanted to be reconciled to The Church and now they have to build a bigger seminary to hold all the vocations they get. How awesome is that…building a new seminary instead of closing them down because they have so many coming to them? 😃
