This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Bishop Armando Xavier Ochoa as the new Bishop of Fresno, California, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since the death of Bishop John Thomas Steinbock in December 2010.

Bishop Ochoa had been serving as Bishop of El Paso, Texas.

Fresno is a great town. I hope Bishop Ochoa enjoys his new home and finds some time to get up into the Sierras. It would be a shame to miss seeing the sequoias when they are so close!

There has been a bit of controversy in the Diocese of El Paso recently. I wonder if that has anything to do with it…
In the absence of any concrete information, I am not sure that it is wise to speculate about such matters. Reasonably, the Diocese of Fresno can be seen as a promotion since it has a much larger general population, as well as a larger Catholic population.
