This morning the Vatican announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to accept the retirement of Edward Michael Cardinal Egan and to name a Archbishop Timothy Michael Dolan as the new Archbishop of New York, New York, USA.

Archbishop Dolan had been serving as Archbishop of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

WTMJ says Milwaukee is happy and and sad. Abp. Dolan did a great job cleaning up after Abp. Weakland.

I’m personally disappointed, though. I had hoped he would hold on in Milwaukee until Cardinal George retired. Chicago has already received two former archbishops of Milwaukee and they were great.

Let’s pray for Abp. (no doubt Cardinal) Dolan and also for a good pick for Milwaukee.

John

Wait a minute, that’s my bishop!

Well, it’s a bit sad to see him go. He’s a very visible person in his diocese and has visited the UW-Milwaukee campus and Newman Center a bunch of times. I think he’s coming to the Newman again on March 5th…I think that’s right, coming to talk about fasting.

Hi guys! Does anyone know just how conservative he is? On a scale of 1 - 10, with one being Fr MrBrian and 10 being Fr. Corapi,We would like to know seeing he will be close to home.

I don’t want to put him on a scale from 1 to 10 of conservatism, but I will give you my experience regarding his handling of a renovation project that our parish is undergoing.

Our pastor put forth a renovation project that would have moved the Tabernacle off to the side of the Church and place the choir in the center behind the altar. The Archbishop put his foot down on that and said the Tabernacle needs to remain in the center behind the altar. 👍

He will be missed by us here in the Archdiocese.

Wow! That would have been an inspiring make-over for you church! I’m surprised he would put his foot down on that project, must not be a music fan!

Huh? Why would one relegate Our Lord to the side while replace Him with a bunch off-key singers 🤷

Inspiring make over? Putting God on the side and music front and center. What would be inspiring about that?

Thank you glad to hear it, I was just going to post and ask if anyone knew what Archbishop Dolan was like. ( Since I live in the diocese) He sounds like exactly what we need. I am not saying anything negative about Archbishop Egan I liked him.

I agree with you in part. The Archbishop was right to keep Our Lord front and center.👍

But our choir is first class, inspirational, and are in my opinion the best in the Archdiocese.

Having said that, I’d rather hear their melodious voices in praise of Our God than to *see *them as if they are the center of our worship.

My fear was that due to our great choir, the decision of our pastor to place the choir behind the altar may have gone through unnoticed - but our Archbishop came through which was nice to see.

I think that sometimes the Real Presence is more of a concept than a reality to some folks. In speaking with a convert one day, I was bemoaning the fact one of the parishes of my youth had moved the tabernacle to the side. She didn’t have a problem with it, as people felt more free to move about without all that pesky kneeling.

I asked her to imagine Christ in His glorified body coming to the church. Would we stick Him off to the side or would we have Him seated high on an alter in the center front of the church? Would we continue moving about or fall to our knees and lie prostrate?

It clicked immediately. If we are Catholics, we know Christ is present glorified every day, so to house Him anywhere but the place of most view and most honor is ludicrous.

Good health and long life to the good cardinal.

The question is not whether the bishop is “conservative” but whether he is “orthodox” in his beliefs and administration. From what I have seen, he is most certainly “orthodox.” He teaches what the Church teaches. That’s what is expected of him. May God bless Him and help him to continue to do a good job!

A choir being the center piece of the church can be very inspiring! It may inspire nausea, but inspiring, non the less. I am surprised and encouraged he took action to keep Jesus where he belongs.
I am really wondering how the new Archbishop is going to be regarding life issues. Will he be strong or lack backbone?

Hopefully this will help ease concerns:

Last year, Dolan took House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice-President Joe Biden to task for misrepresenting Catholic pro-life teachings.
“Church tradition is equally clear that bishops are the authentic teachers of the faith. So, when prominent Catholics publicly misrepresent timeless Church doctrine - as Biden and Pelosi regrettably did (to say nothing of erring in biology!) - a bishop has the duty to clarify,” he explained.
“Does the baby alive in the womb (a biological, not a doctrinal, fact) deserve the full protection of the law or not? Does one have the right to terminate the life of another at will? Can we consider one form of life - that of the innocent, fragile baby in the womb - inferior and expendable?” Dolan asked.
And, for the new New York Catholic leader, the answer is clearly no.
“We cannot be mute on this premier civil rights issue of our day,” he says.
In 2006, Dolan wrote a letter to Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle asking him to reconsider his stance in favor of using taxpayer dollars to fund embryonic stem cell research.

What an inspired choice! ABp. Dolan will no-doubt continue to serve the Church quite well. I hope he is very visible in NYC. He is very smart and orthodox, while also having the diplomatic skills and personality needed in that sort of environment. I think he will make a huge difference.

My opinion is that he will strive to be a 10, and pray to distance himself from being a 1.🙂

I think he is the bishop to whom Jeff Cavins refers to… the one present when Jeff Cavins announced his intent to leave Catholicism, and the one to whom Jeff Cavins again met upon his return to the church.

As a sheep in His Excellency’s flock (Milwaukee Archdiocese), I can personally attest to the archbishop’s devotion to Our Lord:

Perhaps once a semester or school year, he has come down to the Newman Center here on the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s campus to speak and minister to us students here. Anyone who is in the Milwaukee area, come on down to the Newman Center here and show up for his talk on fasting March 5th!

I have had one “one-on-one” conversation with him on campus, after a speech he gave in Spaights Plaza. A friend of mine joined in, too. I asked about the state of the Church in China (I went to the PRC that summer, leading up to the Beijing Olympics). He reassured me that most of the bishops in China, at great risk to themselves, have pledged their loyalty to the Church and the Holy Father’s authority. My friend and I also asked about the seemingly “dumbed down” Catholicism in the diocese. His Excellency remarked how he lamented the way Catholism is taught and how priests too often “speak to the lowest common denominator.” He told us how much he wants to tell people the Gospel.

His Excellency is a somewhat frequent subject on the local news here, such as his trip to Rome (there’s a picture of him with His Holiness JPII in the Newman Center here :)), his community outreach, his ministry, and his ecumenicism.

Back when I had cable, I remember him on EWTN. He also chimes in frequently on Relevant Radio.

So people of the forum, believe me when I tell you that New York will be well-served by His Excellency the Archbishop. I’m just kinda sad he has to go:o.
