Archbishop John Joseph Myers retired and Archbishop Joseph William Tobin, C.SS.R. was named Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, USA.

Archbishop Tobin had been serving as Archbishop of Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Pope previously announced that Archbishop Tobin will be created a cardinal on 19 November 2016.

Archbishop Tobin is/was my Bishop. Interesting. I wonder who the next Archbishop of Indianapolis will be.

I feel somewhat sorry for the Catholics in Indy. I’m sure they were looking to having their first Cardinal Archbishop. 😦

Yeah, seems a little cruel. The Holy See should have announced his appointment as Archbishop of Newark before announcing his election as a cardinal.

Has Newark ever had a cardinal?
I think I read somewhere today that he is the first Cardinal for all of New Jersey. Typically in the past Cardinals were the archbishops of the major dioceses in the U.S., Philadelphia, New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, etc. That has been changing somewhat in recent years and not just in the U.S., so this move is not all that surprising.

Yes, we were! And since our previous Archbishop (Buechlein) had served so long, followed by a great short-term auxillary/administrator (Coyne), this is starting to feel like a revolving door to me…

Cardinal-Designate Tobin’s time in Indianapolis was the 2nd shortest of its ordinaries. (The 3rd bishop died a year after his appointment.)

It took about a year for Tobin to be announced after the previous vacancy - probably a similar time frame this round.

Regarding Newark, this will be their first Cardinal. Although Cardinal McCarrick served as their archbishop for 14 years before he was moved to Washington, DC and became a Cardinal.
